Chapter 14: The Person Behind the White Coat
Marissa Cole arrived at the police station under escort shortly after noon.
She looked as though she hadn't slept in days. Her cardigan hung loosely from her shoulders, and she kept rubbing her palms together while Detective Shaw led her into the interview room.
Nia sat beside Ethan behind the observation glass.
She had asked to be present for the interview, but Detective Shaw had insisted that Marissa first give an uninterrupted statement.
On the other side of the glass, Marissa sat with a cup of water she never touched.
“I need to start at the beginning,” she said.
Detective Shaw nodded.
“Take your time.””
Marissa looked down at her hands.
“Six years ago, I was working night shifts at St. Catherine's. Elaine Bennett was one of my patients. She was ill, but she was still herself.
She asked questions. She remembered details. She knew when people were avoiding her.””
“Did you believe she was capable of understanding medical decisions?””
“Yes.””
“Did she understand the medication she was receiving?””
“Initially, yes. But after the first unauthorized dose, she became increasingly confused.””
Nia pressed her fingertips against the glass.
Marissa continued.
“On October thirteenth, Elaine asked me to contact Dr. Ward. She said the treatment plan had changed without her consent.
I checked the electronic record and found an additional medication order under Dr. Hayes's credentials.””
“Did you administer it?””
“No. I reported it to the supervising nurse.””
“What happened?””
“She told me to follow the chart. When I refused, she said I was interfering with a physician's orders.””
“Who was the supervising nurse?””
Marissa swallowed.
“Dr. Adrian Cross.””
Nia turned sharply toward Ethan.
He stared at her.
Adrian Cross.
The name appeared on the documents from Hawthorne Neurological Recovery Center. He was the physician whose credentials had been used to authorize several later transfers.
But Nia knew him for another reason.
He had attended Elaine's funeral.
He had stood beside Arthur in the front row, wearing a black overcoat and carrying a folded umbrella. Afterward, he had approached Nia and told her that her mother had been brave.
She had thanked him.
She had never questioned who he was.
Ethan immediately sent the name to Detective Shaw.
Inside the room, Marissa continued.
“Dr. Cross was responsible for the private wing. He told me Elaine needed additional sedation because she was becoming agitated. I asked him to show me the revised treatment plan.””
“Did he?””
“No. He said the paperwork would be completed later.””
“Did you administer the medication?””
Marissa closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
Nia felt the room tilt.
Ethan caught her hand.
On the other side of the glass, Detective Shaw remained still.
“Explain exactly what happened.””
Marissa's voice shook.
“I believed I was administering the prescribed medication. Dr. Cross handed me the prepared syringe himself. He told me the dosage had been checked and that the order was already approved.””
“Did you verify the order?””
“No.””
“Why not?””
“Because I had worked with him for years. I trusted him.””
Marissa began crying.
“Elaine's breathing became shallow. I called for help, but Dr. Cross told me to wait. He said the medication was expected to cause drowsiness.””
“And when did you realize something was wrong?””
“When Elaine stopped responding.””
Nia closed her eyes.
The hospital corridor returned to her in fragments: the rushing footsteps, the hurried voices, the moment a nurse had asked her to wait outside the room.
She had been told her mother was deteriorating.
She had never been told that someone had administered a medication without verifying the order.
Detective Shaw asked, “Did Dr. Cross report the incident?””
“No.””
“What did he do?””
“He told me to document the dose as part of Elaine's standard treatment. He said the doctor had approved it and that the patient's condition was unrelated.””
“And you agreed?””
Marissa looked down.
“I was afraid. He said I would lose my license if I accused him without proof. He said my career would be over.””
“So you changed the record?””
Marissa nodded.
“Yes.””
Nia pressed her hand against her mouth.
Marissa had been frightened. She had been manipulated. She had also helped falsify a medical record after Elaine's death.
Her fear explained the silence.
It didn't erase the consequences.
Detective Shaw's voice remained calm.
“Did you ever see Dr. Cross alter the treatment order himself?””
“Yes.””
The detective leaned forward.
“When?””
“On October fourteenth. After Elaine's breathing became unstable, he went to the medication station and entered a new order. I watched him use Dr. Hayes's credentials.””
“Did you confront him?””
“I asked why he was using another physician's login.””
“What did he say?””
Marissa's eyes filled.
“He told me that if I wanted to keep my job, I would forget what I had seen.””
“And did you?””
“I tried.””
She looked up.
“But Elaine had asked me to protect her daughters. She gave me a sealed envelope and told me to keep it somewhere safe.””
Nia leaned closer to the glass.
“What envelope?”” she whispered.
Ethan shook his head, listening.
Inside the interview room, Detective Shaw asked, “What happened to the envelope?””
“I gave it to Martin Voss.””
“Why?””
“He told me he was representing the family and would make sure the evidence reached the authorities.””
“Did he?””
“No.””
Marissa's voice became a whisper.
“He paid me to stay quiet.””
Detective Shaw sat back.
“How much?””
“Fifty thousand dollars.””
Nia stared at the woman who had helped her mother and then helped conceal what happened to her.
“Why are you coming forward now?”” the detective asked.
Marissa wiped her face.
“Because Martin called me last night. He said Daniel had attacked him and that the police were looking for both of them. He told me to leave the country.””
“Did you?””
“No. I went to the police.””
“Why?””
Marissa looked directly at the observation glass.
“Because I saw Nia at the wedding. I saw what had happened to her. And I realized that if I stayed silent again, someone else would get hurt.””
Detective Shaw ended the interview.
Minutes later, she entered the observation room.
“We need to locate Dr. Cross immediately.””
“Do you think he's responsible for my mother's death?”” Nia asked.
“We have evidence that he administered medication without proper authorization, altered medical records, and concealed a treatment discrepancy. Whether those actions caused Elaine's death will require expert analysis.””
“Where is he now?””
“His office says he's attending a medical conference in Boston. His passport shows no departure from the country, and we're checking his recent movements.””
Ethan opened his laptop.
“There's something else. Hawthorne's payments to Northstar were approved by a medical director. The name on the authorization is Adrian Cross.””
Detective Shaw nodded.
“That strengthens the connection.””
Nia stared at the screen.
A doctor.
Someone entrusted with the lives of vulnerable patients.
Someone who had attended her mother's funeral and looked her in the eye.
“Can I ask Marissa one question?”” she said.
“Not yet. We need to finish her formal statement.””
“Then ask her this. Why did she say I had met the person before?””
Detective Shaw returned to the interview room.
When she came back, her expression had changed.
“Marissa says Dr. Cross was at the lake house the night you were injured.””
Nia felt every muscle in her body tighten.
“What?””
“She says she saw him arrive shortly after Daniel. She didn't witness the assault, but she heard an argument and saw Dr. Cross leave with a medical bag.””
Ethan stood.
“Why would a physician go to the lake house?””
“We don't know.””
Nia stared at Detective Shaw.
“He came to treat me?””
“Possibly. Or to remove evidence. We need to establish the timeline.””
The detective left to coordinate with the medical examiner and the team searching for Cross.
Ethan sat beside Nia.
“Do you remember seeing him that night?””
“No.””
“Were you conscious when the ambulance arrived?””
“I don't know. I remember falling. Then there's a gap.””
He took her hand.
“Don't force yourself to remember.””
“But what if he gave me something?””
“We'll have the medical records examined.””
Nia looked toward the window.
The same man who had supposedly treated her mother might have been present when she was injured. If he had been there to help her, why had no one told her? If he had been there for another reason, what had he taken?
At 4:30 p.m., Detective Shaw returned with a photograph from the lake house security system.
The image showed a dark vehicle parked near the side entrance.
The registration matched a car registered to Adrian Cross.
The timestamp was 11:42 p.m.
Nia studied the photograph.
“That's after I fell.””
“Yes,” the detective said.
“Did he enter the house?””
“We're reviewing additional footage. The cameras were partially obstructed, but we can confirm the vehicle remained there for nineteen minutes.””
Ethan leaned closer.
“Did he leave with anything?””
“Not from what we've seen.””
Nia's mind raced.
“What did Brielle say about him?””
“She says she doesn't remember seeing him. But she also admitted Daniel told her not to mention the argument at the lake house.””
“Which argument?””
“The argument that occurred shortly before you fell.””
Nia turned to Ethan.
“Brielle was there.””
“Yes,” he said quietly.
“She knows what happened.””
Detective Shaw nodded.
“We're bringing her back for another interview.””
At 6:05 p.m., Brielle sat across from the detective again.
This time, she didn't ask for her lawyer to answer first.
“I saw Dr. Cross,” she said.
Nia watched from the observation room.
“He came to the lake house after Daniel called him. I thought he was there to help Nia.””
“Why?””
“Daniel said she'd hit her head and needed a doctor.””
“Was she conscious?””
“I don't know. She was on the floor near the stairs.””
Nia gripped Ethan's arm.
“What did Cross do?””
Brielle stared at the table.
“He checked her pulse. Then he told Daniel to get a blanket.””
“Did he call an ambulance?””
“No.””
“Did you?””
Brielle shook her head.
“I was scared. Daniel said Nia had attacked him and fallen during the argument. He told me that if I called the police, everyone would find out about the foundation.””
Detective Shaw's voice sharpened.
“So you left your injured sister without calling emergency services?””
Brielle began crying.
“Yes.””
Nia closed her eyes.
Brielle continued.
“Dr. Cross said Nia was breathing and that he would make sure she received care. He gave Daniel a small bottle and told him to use it only if she woke up before the ambulance arrived.””
Detective Shaw leaned forward.
“What was in the bottle?””
“I don't know.””
“Where is it now?””
Brielle looked up, horrified.
“I don't know.””
“Did Daniel give you the bottle?””
“No.””
“Did you see him administer anything to Nia?””
Brielle hesitated.
Then she whispered, “Yes.””
Nia felt the room go silent around her.
Detective Shaw asked, “What did you see?””
Brielle covered her mouth.
“Daniel knelt beside Nia and opened the bottle. He said she needed something to keep her calm until Cross could get her to the clinic.””
“What happened next?””
“I told him to stop.””
“Did he?””
“No.””
Brielle began sobbing.
“He put something in her mouth. Then he told me to go upstairs and clean the blood off my dress.””
Nia couldn't breathe.
The memory of the lake house came back in flashes: the polished staircase, the hard floor, Daniel's voice somewhere above her.
And a bitter taste on her tongue.
She gripped Ethan's hand until he winced.
“Did you see Dr. Cross return?”” Detective Shaw asked.
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
“He took the bottle from Daniel. He checked Nia again, then told Daniel to leave the room.””
“Did he call an ambulance?””
Brielle shook her head.
“No. He called someone. I heard him say, 'The same arrangement as before.''”
Detective Shaw went very still.
“What happened after that?””
“Daniel told me to go to my car. He said he'd handle everything.””
“Did you?””
“Yes.””
“And you left your sister there?””
Brielle lowered her head.
“Yes.””
The interview ended.
Nia sat motionless.
Ethan moved closer, but she couldn't look at him.
She had spent days wondering whether Daniel had arranged her fall.
Now she knew that after she had been injured, someone had given her an unknown substance, someone had prevented her from receiving immediate emergency care, and someone had arranged for her to be moved.
Detective Shaw returned.
“An officer has located Dr. Cross. He's at a private medical residence outside the city. We're executing a warrant.””
“Is Martin with him?”” Nia asked.
“We don't know.””
“Then don't let him leave.””
The detective nodded and hurried away.
At 8:17 p.m., Ethan received a call from the medical examiner.
He listened for several seconds before his face went pale.
“What is it?”” Nia asked.
He ended the call.
“They found a discrepancy in your hospital records. The medication documented when you arrived at the emergency department was not the substance initially identified in the preliminary report.””
Nia felt cold.
“What does that mean?””
“It means the substance you were given at the lake house may have been different from what the hospital recorded.””
“Could Cross have changed the record?””
“Possibly. The examiner is investigating.””
Before Nia could respond, Detective Shaw called.
Her voice was urgent.
“We have Dr. Cross in custody. He was found with a medical bag, a passport, and several sealed files belonging to Martin Voss.””
Nia stood.
“Did you find Martin?””
“No.””
“Where are the files?””
“We're examining them now.””
A pause followed.
Then Detective Shaw said, “One file contains a signed statement from Dr. Cross. It claims that Elaine Bennett's medication was changed at the direct request of Arthur Bennett.””
Nia closed her eyes.
“Is that true?””
“We don't know yet.””
“Then ask him.””
“We will.””
The detective hesitated.
“There's something else. Dr. Cross has requested to speak with you.””
Nia's heart pounded.
“Why?””
“He says he can explain what happened to your mother and why you were targeted at the lake house.””
Ethan shook his head immediately.
“You don't have to speak to him.””
Nia looked at the phone.
For six years, people had used her mother's death to hide behind paperwork, money, and carefully constructed lies.
Now the man at the center of the medical records was finally in custody.

“Tell him I'll listen,” she said.
Then she added, “But only with the detective present.””
