Chapter 2: The Family That Tried To Erase Me

The first thing I noticed when Detective Harris entered my hospital room was the folder in his hand.

Not a bouquet.

Not flowers.

Not an apology letter.

A folder.

That told me everything.

“Emma Carter?”” he asked.

I nodded slowly.

“I’m Detective James Harris. I’ve been investigating an incident involving you and your family.””

My throat tightened.

“My family?””

He pulled a chair closer.

“Before I explain, I need to ask you some questions.””

I looked at him carefully.

“Am I in trouble?””

His expression softened.

“No. But someone tried very hard to make it appear that you were.””

Those words made my entire body go still.

“What?””

Detective Harris opened the folder.

“Emma, while you were unconscious, your stepmother, your father, and two relatives gave statements claiming you had been showing signs of severe mental instability.””

I stared at him.

I thought I had misunderstood.

“Excuse me?””

“They claimed you were making irrational decisions. They claimed you were unable to manage your finances. They claimed your engagement was part of a pattern of reckless behavior.””

My mouth opened, but no words came out.

Because the strangest part wasn’t the accusation.

It was how familiar it sounded.

Vivian had spent years planting little seeds.

You’re too emotional.

You’re too trusting.

You don’t understand the world.

You need guidance.

But I never imagined she would try to turn those insults into official records.

“Why would they do that?”” I asked.

Detective Harris looked down at the documents.

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“No.””

He looked up.

“No?””

“You already know.””

My voice shook.

“They want control.””

The detective didn’t answer immediately.

That silence told me I was right.

“They were attempting to establish legal authority over certain parts of your life,” he finally said.

My stomach dropped.

“Legal authority?””

He nodded.

“Financial decisions. Personal decisions. Documents connected to your mother’s estate.””

My mother.

The room spun.

“What about my mother’s estate?””

Detective Harris placed another paper on the table.

“Your mother left a will.””

I swallowed.

“I know.””

“No, Emma. I mean the original will.””

The way he said it made my hands go cold.

“There was another version?””

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“My father told me everything was already settled.””

“That’s what he wanted you to believe.””

For years, I had trusted that my mother’s belongings were protected.

Her jewelry.

Her letters.

The small things that carried her memory.

My father always told me there was nothing complicated.

But apparently, there was.

And apparently, people I loved had been working behind my back.

Detective Harris continued.

“Your stepmother used your father’s access to certain documents. She also had access to your mother’s information.””

“What kind of documents?””

“A passport. Identification records. Estate paperwork.””

I felt sick.

“Why would she need my passport?””

The detective looked at me.

“Because someone used it.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“Our investigation found evidence that someone attempted to impersonate you during a notarized transaction.””

The words barely sounded real.

“Someone pretended to be me?””

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

My entire life suddenly felt like a house with hidden rooms.

Rooms I never knew existed.

“Who?”” I whispered.

“We’re still confirming every detail, but the evidence points toward someone hired to appear as you.””

I covered my face with my hands.

My head hurt.

My heart hurt more.

My own family had not just betrayed me.

They had tried to replace me.

Later that afternoon, Caleb came into my room.

The second I saw him, I broke.

Not dramatically.

Not like in movies.

I simply looked at him, and all the strength I had been pretending to have disappeared.

He rushed to my side.

“Emma.””

I leaned into him carefully, avoiding the pain in my head.

“I don’t understand,” I whispered.

“I know.””

“They tried to say I was crazy.””

“I know.””

“They tried to take my mother’s things.””

His jaw tightened.

“I know.””

I pulled away.

“How long did you know?””

His face changed.

“What do you mean?””

“You look like you’ve been carrying this.””

Caleb looked down.

“I found out something was wrong before you woke up.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

He took a deep breath.

“After the party, I went back because I wanted to get your phone charger. Your father and Vivian were arguing.””

“About me?””

“Yes.””

“What did you hear?””

Caleb hesitated.

Then he answered.

“Vivian said, ‘Once everyone believes Emma can’t handle her own life, everything becomes easier.’”

I closed my eyes.

A tear slipped down my cheek.

Everything became easier.

For them.

Not for me.

Detective Harris had told me my family tried to erase me.

Now I understood the cruelty of it.

They didn’t just want my money.

They wanted my voice gone.

They wanted people to stop believing me before I even spoke.

But Vivian made one mistake.

She underestimated how much my mother had prepared me.

Before she died, my mother always told me something.

“Baby girl, people can take things from you. They can take money. They can take possessions. But never let them convince you that you don’t know your own truth.””

At the time, I thought she was comforting me.

Now I realized she was warning me.

And somewhere, hidden beneath years of lies, my mother had left me something.

Something Vivian never found.

May you like

Something that could destroy everything they built.

I just had to find it.
