The Son They Tried to Erase / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2: The Video That Changed Everything

The first video I watched was from three weeks earlier.

I clicked the file.

There was Jamal walking down the hallway with a basket of laundry.

Kayla came out of her room.

They passed each other.

That was it.

No stopping.

No following.

No strange behavior.

Nothing.

I watched another video.

Then another.

And another.

Hour after hour, I sat in my office watching pieces of my own household play back on a screen.

And the more I watched, the more confused I became.

Because the story I had been told was falling apart.

Jamal wasn’t following Kayla.

He wasn’t waiting outside her room.

He wasn’t trying to get her attention.

If anything, he was doing the opposite.

Every time they crossed paths, he moved away.

He gave her space.

He looked uncomfortable whenever they were near each other.

Then I saw something that made my hands freeze over the keyboard.

The timestamp was from five days before Kayla accused him.

The hallway camera showed Kayla walking into the living room.

Monique followed behind her.

At first, nothing seemed unusual.

Then I turned up the volume.

My heart started beating faster.

“Remember what we talked about,” Monique said.

Kayla looked nervous.

“I don’t know if I can do this, Mom.””

My body went cold.

I leaned closer to the screen.

“What if Dad doesn’t believe me?””

Monique answered immediately.

“He will. He has to.””

I stopped breathing for a moment.

Because I knew what I was hearing.

I watched the rest.

Monique sat beside her daughter and held her hand.

“You just have to say that Jamal makes you uncomfortable. You don’t have to explain every detail.””

Kayla looked down.

“But what if Jamal gets mad?””

“He won’t be here long.””

Those words hit me harder than anything else.

He won’t be here long.

I replayed the clip.

Again.

And again.

My chest felt heavy.

Not because I was surprised that someone could lie.

People lied every day.

What hurt was realizing the lie came from inside my own house.

From someone I trusted.

I printed every video file.

Then I sat there for almost an hour, staring at the papers.

Because proof didn’t erase pain.

It only confirmed it.

I wanted to believe there was some explanation.

Some misunderstanding.

Some missing piece.

But there wasn’t.

Monique had planned this.

I walked into the kitchen where she was making coffee.

She looked at me.

“You look serious.””

“I need you to come into the living room.””

Her expression changed slightly.

“What is this about?””

“Come with me.””

She followed me.

Jamal was already there.

I had called him downstairs.

He sat on the couch, confused.

I placed my laptop on the table.

“Before we say anything, I want everyone to watch something.””

Monique’s face went pale.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

I pressed play.

The room filled with her own voice.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Kayla walked in halfway through the video.

The moment she heard herself, tears filled her eyes.

“Mom…”

Monique immediately stood up.

“Turn that off.””

“No.””

“Eli, turn it off.””

I shook my head.

“Not this time.””

Jamal watched the screen silently.

When the video ended, nobody knew what to say.

Finally, Kayla whispered, “I didn’t want to do it.””

I looked at her.

“Then why did you?””

She started crying.

“I thought I had to.””

“Why?””

She looked at her mother.

And that was when I knew the truth was finally coming out.

“Because Mom said if Jamal left, I could use his college money.””

The room went completely silent.

Jamal’s face changed.

Not anger.

Not rage.

Pain.

Real pain.

“My college money?””

Kayla covered her mouth.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at Monique.

The woman standing in front of me was not the woman I thought I married.

“You were willing to destroy my son’s future for money?””

She shook her head.

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then explain it.””

She said nothing.

“Explain why you coached your daughter.””

Still nothing.

“Explain why you wanted Jamal gone.””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“Because you always put him first.””

I stared at her.

And suddenly everything made sense.

This was never about Kayla feeling uncomfortable.

This was never about safety.

This was about removing my son from the house.

From my family.

From the life I had worked so hard to build.

I looked at Jamal.

For years, I thought protecting him meant making sure nobody hurt him.

But I was wrong.

Sometimes protecting someone means making a choice that hurts you too.

I turned back to Monique.

“This house was always meant to be Jamal’s after I was gone.””

Her face changed.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

The house had belonged to my parents before me. My father had worked two jobs to pay it off. Before he passed, he told me something I never forgot.

A home should be where your children know they belong.

And I had planned to leave it to my son.

Monique had known that.

That was why she wanted him gone.

I took a deep breath.

“Kayla will stay here tonight. She needs time to figure out where she goes from here.””

Monique looked relieved for a moment.

Then I finished.

“But you won’t.””

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

“I want you to call Kayla’s biological father.””

She stared at me.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Eli, don’t do this.””

“You made a decision when you tried to destroy my son’s life.””

I picked up the laptop.

“This is my decision.””

Jamal looked at me.

And for the first time in days, I saw something different in his eyes.

Not fear.

Not hurt.

Hope.

I had almost lost my son because I was afraid of making the wrong choice.

But now I knew exactly what choice I had to make.
