Chapter 2: The Friend Who Knew Too Much

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I was afraid.

Fear was something I understood.

Fear was simple.

You either faced it or ran from it.

What I felt that night was something much worse.

Betrayal.

Marcus Vance had been in my life for fifteen years.

He knew my business.

He knew my enemies.

He knew my weaknesses.

But most importantly, he knew my family.

He knew Simone.

He knew my daughters.

He knew exactly where to hurt me.

I sat alone in my office after midnight, staring at the security monitors.

My mansion was quiet.

Too quiet.

The same silence that had haunted me for over a year now felt different.

Before, it was empty.

Now, it was hiding something.

I called my head of security, Andre.

“Bring me every camera recording from the week before Simone died.””

There was a pause.

“Every camera?””

“Yes.””

“Even the private feeds?””

I looked at the screen showing my daughters sleeping peacefully upstairs.

“Especially those.””

Andre knew not to ask questions.

Within thirty minutes, my office was filled with files.

I had spent fourteen months looking for strangers.

I searched outside threats.

Business rivals.

People who wanted my empire.

People who hated my success.

I never searched the person standing closest to me.

That was my mistake.

The first thing I found was a deleted security gap.

Three hours before Simone was attacked, Marcus entered my property.

The strange part?

He told everyone he had been out of town.

I leaned closer to the screen.

There he was.

Walking through my house like he owned it.

No hesitation.

No fear.

Like he already knew nobody would question him.

Then I checked the phone records.

Marcus had made several calls that day.

One number appeared repeatedly.

A number connected to a man who had been investigated before for violent crimes.

My jaw tightened.

Then came the financial records.

Payments.

Hidden accounts.

Transfers that didn’t make sense.

Marcus wasn’t just hiding something.

He was building something.

A plan.

A plan that started with Simone’s death.

And ended with me losing everything.

Because without me, my company would collapse.

My enemies would move in.

And Marcus would be the only person left standing.

The man who helped build my empire had been waiting to inherit it.

I stared at the screen until my eyes burned.

Then I heard a small voice behind me.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

Sophie stood in the doorway wearing pajamas.

Immediately, my anger disappeared.

That was the thing about being a father.

Your children could walk into the middle of your darkest moment and somehow remind you what mattered.

“What are you doing awake?””

She looked at the floor.

“I had a bad dream.””

I walked over and picked her up.

“About Mommy?””

She nodded.

“Are you mad at me?””

That question hurt.

“Why would I be mad at you?””

“Because I didn’t tell you.””

I held her tighter.

“You were scared, baby.””

“I tried.””

“I know.””

She looked at me.

“Uncle Marcus told us nobody would believe little girls.””

My blood went cold.

I forced myself to stay calm.

“Did he say that?””

She nodded.

“He said Daddy was too angry and people would get hurt.””

That confirmed everything.

Marcus hadn’t just attacked my family.

He had controlled their fear.

He had stolen their voices.

I carried Sophie back to bed.

Grace was sitting beside Olivia and Amara.

She looked at me.

One glance was enough.

She knew.

“You found something.””

I nodded.

“More than something.””

Grace looked at the girls.

“Are they safe?””

That question reminded me of the man I had become.

For years, I believed power meant making people afraid of me.

But sitting there with my daughters, I understood something.

Power wasn’t the ability to destroy someone.

Power was the ability to protect what mattered.

“They’re safe,” I said.

Grace studied me carefully.

“Promise me something.””

“What?””

“Don’t become the thing that hurt them.””

Her words stayed with me.

Because she knew the truth.

A man like me had a choice.

I could become revenge.

Or I could become justice.

The next evening, Marcus arrived at the mansion like he always did.

Perfect suit.

Calm smile.

Silver ring on his hand.

“Malik,” he said warmly.

“I heard you came home early.””

I watched him carefully.

“I did.””

He smiled.

“Everything okay?””

Before I answered, the girls walked into the room.

The second they saw him, they froze.

Amara grabbed Grace’s hand.

Olivia stepped behind her.

Sophie’s face turned pale.

Marcus noticed.

And for the first time in fifteen years, I saw something behind his eyes.

Fear.

“What’s wrong?”” I asked.

Marcus forced a laugh.

“Kids are strange after trauma.””

Then it happened.

A sound cut through the room.

A ringtone.

Everyone froze.

Marcus reached into his jacket.

A red phone slipped halfway out.

Olivia gasped.

“That phone.””

Marcus stopped moving.

I stared at him.

The same red phone.

The same silver ring.

The same man.

The truth had been sitting in my home all along.

Marcus slowly looked at me.

And the smile disappeared.

“Malik…”

I stood up.

“Don’t.””

My security team entered the room.

For once, Marcus looked small.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just a man who had finally run out of places to hide.

But I didn’t touch him.

I didn’t hit him.

I didn’t give him the ending he expected.

I looked at my daughters.

Then I looked at the man who tried to steal their future.

“You’re going to answer every question,” I said quietly.

“And this time, my family gets to speak.””
