Chapter 6: The Truth Locked Away

Bear stared at the message until the words stopped looking like words.

*Do not let Evelyn open that room.*

His fingers tightened around the phone.

For years, Daniel had been the person whose voice could calm him.

The person who could walk into a room and make everything feel less dangerous.

But now, standing in the darkness outside his house, Daniel looked like a stranger.

A stranger who knew too much.

A stranger who was afraid.

Behind Bear, Evelyn stood frozen.

“Mia is asleep,” she whispered.

Bear looked back.

“Stay here.””

Her eyes widened.

“No.””

“You’re not going outside.””

“Bear—”

“No.””

The firmness in his voice surprised both of them.

For the first time, Evelyn saw something different in him.

Not the angry child she left behind.

Not the wounded son looking for answers.

A grown man who had spent years surviving without her.

“I already lost you once,” Bear said quietly.

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“I’m not letting anyone take you away again.””

The words hit her harder than any accusation.

Before she could respond, there was a knock on the door.

Three slow knocks.

Not rushed.

Not nervous.

Confident.

Daniel knew he would be answered.

Bear walked toward the door.

Evelyn grabbed his sleeve.

“Be careful.””

He looked at her.

“Was he always like this?””

A painful silence.

Finally, she said:

“Yes.””

Bear opened the door.

Daniel stood on the porch.

He looked older than Bear remembered.

His hair had turned almost completely gray. His face carried deep lines. But his eyes were the same.

The same eyes that had watched over him as a child.

The same eyes that now held secrets.

“Benjamin.””

Bear’s expression hardened.

“Don’t call me that.””

Daniel looked hurt.

A real hurt.

But Bear no longer knew what was real.

“You got my message.””

“Yes.””

Daniel glanced past him.

“Is she here?””

Bear stepped forward.

“You already know she is.””

Daniel sighed.

“Then you know why I came.””

“No.””

Bear’s voice was cold.

“I know you showed up after watching my house.””

Daniel looked away.

“I wasn’t watching you.””

“Then what were you doing?””

Silence.

That silence was becoming a language Bear hated.

“Answer me.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I was protecting you.””

Bear almost smiled.

“Protecting me?””

“Yes.””

“From what?””

Daniel looked over Bear’s shoulder.

At Evelyn.

Then back at him.

“From the truth.””

Bear’s jaw tightened.

“I’m done with people deciding what I can handle.””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Benjamin, you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

A pause.

“Let me in.””

Bear did not move.

“No.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“You trust her?””

The question immediately angered him.

“I don’t know who I trust.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“That’s fair.””

He stepped closer.

“Because everyone has lied to you.””

Bear felt his chest tighten.

“Start talking.””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

Then back at Bear.

“Not here.””

“Why?””

“Because Thomas is listening.””

The words changed the air.

Bear glanced around.

“You think he’s here?””

Daniel nodded.

“I know he is.””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Daniel.””

The sound of his name carried years of history.

Daniel looked at her.

And something painful passed between them.

“You shouldn’t have come back.””

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

“I had no choice.””

“You always had a choice.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“You took that choice from me.””

Bear looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Neither answered.

That was enough.

Bear stepped outside and closed the door behind him.

“No more secrets.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You really want to know?””

“Yes.””

“Even if it changes everything?””

Bear looked toward the window.

Where Evelyn stood behind the glass.

“Yes.””

Daniel took a slow breath.

“Your mother did leave.””

The words hit.

Even after everything, they still hurt.

Bear’s face changed.

Daniel continued.

“But not because she didn’t love you.””

“Then why?””

“Because she found out what Thomas was doing.””

Bear crossed his arms.

“I know.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You know pieces.””

He looked toward the house.

“She found the documents.””

“What documents?””

“The ones proving Thomas was involved in criminal activity.””

Bear said nothing.

“She planned to take them to the police.””

“Then why didn’t she?””

Daniel’s expression became heavy.

“Because Thomas found out.””

“I know that part.””

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You don’t.””

The porch light flickered above them.

“Thomas didn’t just threaten her.””

Daniel looked directly into Bear’s eyes.

“He threatened you.””

Bear felt a chill.

“He said he would make sure you disappeared too.””

A memory flashed.

His father’s voice.

His mother crying.

The sound of glass breaking.

A door slamming.

Bear grabbed the railing.

“What happened that night?””

Daniel looked down.

“I got there too late.””

The words were quiet.

“I found Evelyn trying to leave with you.””

Bear looked at him.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel looked away.

“Because Thomas made me choose.””

Bear froze.

“What?””

“He told me if I helped her, you would be hurt.””

A terrible silence followed.

Bear’s voice became softer.

“You believed him.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I was afraid.””

The honesty was almost worse.

“You were afraid.””

“Yes.””

“And my mother disappeared because you were afraid?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

Bear stepped back.

For the first time, he saw Daniel not as a hero.

But as a man who had failed.

A man who made a choice.

“You raised me.””

“Yes.””

“You became my father.””

Daniel swallowed.

“I tried.””

“Then why did you let me hate her?””

The question broke Daniel.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

Bear laughed bitterly.

“Everyone was protecting me.””

He shook his head.

“Everyone except the truth.””

Daniel had no answer.

Then suddenly, a sound came from inside.

A crash.

Bear turned.

The front door was open.

His blood ran cold.

“Evelyn?””

He rushed inside.

Daniel followed.

The living room was empty.

The table had been overturned.

The wooden box was gone.

And the guest room door was open.

“Mia!””

Bear ran down the hallway.

The bed was empty.

The blanket was on the floor.

His heart stopped.

“Where is she?””

Evelyn stood near the window.

Her face was pale.

“I heard something.””

Bear looked at her.

“Who took her?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Then he saw it.

On the bed.

A small piece of paper.

His hands shook as he picked it up.

Three words were written.

*COME ALONE, BEAR.*

Below it was a symbol.

A symbol he recognized from the old photograph inside the box.

Daniel saw it.

His face changed instantly.

“No.””

Bear looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel stepped backward.

“That symbol…”

“What does it mean?””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“It means Thomas isn’t the only one who knows about the room.””

Bear stared.

“What room?””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

Then at the missing child’s empty bed.

“The room under your grandfather’s house.””

Bear’s blood went cold.

The place they thought held the truth.

The place behind the key.

The place everyone had spent years hiding.

Daniel whispered:

“Mia was taken there.””

Bear grabbed his jacket.

“Then that’s where I’m going.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Bear looked at him.

“Move.””

Daniel’s eyes filled with fear.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“The room was never meant to hide evidence.””

Bear stopped.

“What?””

Daniel looked at him.

“It was built to hide someone.””

A silence.

May you like

Then Daniel said the words that made Bear’s entire body go cold.

“Your mother wasn’t the only person who disappeared that night.””
