Chapter 8: The Room Behind the Wall
The old house had been empty for years.
But suddenly, every room felt alive.
Every corner held a secret.
Every wall had something to say.
Darius and I searched for hours.
The basement.
The attic.
The old study where my father spent most nights working.
Nothing.
No document.
No hidden box.
No answer.
Only memories.
At midnight, Darius sat on the floor of the study.
“I hate that he did this.””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
“Dad.””
I understood.
“He left us fighting over something he could have explained.””
Darius nodded.
“That was his greatest weakness.””
I stared at the shelves.
“No.””
Darius looked at me.
“What?””
“His greatest weakness was believing he could control everything.””
And maybe that was where I got it from.
The belief that if I worked harder, planned better, protected more, nothing could surprise me.
But life doesn’t work that way.
People surprise you.
Sometimes the ones closest to you.
I ran my hand along the bookshelf.
Something felt wrong.
One section was slightly uneven.
I pushed.
Nothing.
I pushed harder.
A small click echoed.
Darius stood.
“What was that?””
Behind the bookshelf, a hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a small wooden box.
Neither of us moved.
Because we both knew.
We had found it.
I opened the box slowly.
Inside was a document sealed in plastic.
And another letter.
The letter was addressed to both of us.
My hands shook as I opened it.
*Darius and Adrian,*
*If you are reading this, then I have failed to tell you the truth while I was alive.*
I stopped.
Darius moved closer.
I continued.
*Carter Holdings was never meant to belong to one son. It was built through the sacrifices of this family, and both of you have a right to it.*
Darius closed his eyes.
I kept reading.
*But there is something you must know. Someone has been trying to take control of this company from within. I discovered financial manipulation before my death.*
My heart raced.
Financial manipulation.
Years before Vanessa.
Years before the stroller.
*I trusted the wrong person.*
The letter ended there.
No name.
No explanation.
Just a warning.
Darius looked at me.
“Who was he talking about?””
I didn’t know.
But then I noticed something.
A second piece of paper beneath the letter.
A list.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
And one name that made my blood freeze.
Vanessa’s last name.
Before she became Vanessa.
She had a connection to my father.
A connection neither of us knew about.
“What is it?”” Darius asked.
I handed him the paper.
He read it.
His face changed.
“No.””
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Adrian…”
“What?””
He pointed to the name.
“She wasn’t a stranger.””
I stared at the page.
My heart pounded.
“What are you saying?””
Darius swallowed.
“Vanessa’s father worked for ours.””
The room went silent.
“And?””
“And he was the person your father accused of stealing from the company.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
Suddenly everything connected.
The money.
The documents.
The revenge.
The obsession.
Vanessa wasn’t just trying to take my company.
She was trying to rewrite history.
Darius looked at the document again.
“She’s been planning this for years.””
I nodded slowly.
But one question remained.
“If she wanted revenge…”
I looked at the evidence.
“Why marry me?””
Neither of us had an answer.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Vanessa.
One sentence.
*“Ask your brother what really happened the night your father died.””*
I looked at Darius.
May you like
And for the first time that night…
He looked afraid.
