Chapter 4: The Family That Wanted the Money
The next week felt like a storm that never ended.
Every morning brought new information.
Every phone call revealed another lie.
And every lie made me wonder how long this had been happening before Ava picked up that phone.
The investigation moved quickly.
The detective assigned to the case asked me for school records, medical records, and communication between Brenda and the family.
I gave him everything.
Because I had nothing left to hide.
But the hardest part was talking about Elena.
Because every document connected back to her.
Every piece of evidence reminded me of what we lost.
And what we were still fighting to protect.
Marcus, Elena’s attorney, finally scheduled a meeting.
He arrived at my house carrying a small folder.
“I’m sorry it took this long,” he said.
“I understand.””
He looked at Nia and Ava.
“They’re stronger than they should have had to be.””
I nodded.
“That’s what hurts.””
Marcus sat down.
“There’s something you need to know.””
I waited.
“When Elena created the trust, she added a protection clause.””
“What kind?””
“She believed someone might attempt to challenge your parenting rights for financial reasons.””
I felt anger rise.
“She knew?””
“She had concerns.””
“About who?””
Marcus looked at me carefully.
“Daniel, Elena loved her family. But she was also observant.””
He opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Letters.
Notes.
And a sealed envelope.
“She left this for your daughters.””
My hands shook.
“Why didn’t I know about this?””
“Because she wanted it delivered only if certain conditions were met.””
“What conditions?””
Marcus looked toward the girls.
“If someone attempted to separate them from you.””
The room went silent.
I touched the envelope.
Elena’s handwriting was on the front.
My chest tightened.
I knew that handwriting.
I had seen it on grocery lists.
Birthday cards.
Notes left beside my coffee.
For a second, I wasn’t sitting in my living room.
I was back in our kitchen.
Before cancer.
Before hospitals.
Before goodbye.
Marcus spoke softly.
“She wanted them to hear her voice.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a small flash drive.
I put it into my laptop.
The screen loaded.
Then Elena appeared.
Older than the pictures I kept.
Tired.
But still beautiful.
Her eyes looked directly into the camera.
“Hi, my babies.””
Nia immediately covered her mouth.
Ava started crying.
Elena smiled.
“I don’t know when you’ll see this, but if you’re watching it, something happened that made your father worried.””
I held my breath.
“Elena,” I whispered.
She continued.
“I need you to remember something. Love is not control. Love is not fear. Love does not make you feel small.””
Nia grabbed my hand.
My wife’s voice filled the room.
“Anyone who hurts you and tells you it is for your own good is not protecting you.””
I closed my eyes.
Because that was exactly what Brenda had done.
Again and again.
Elena looked into the camera.
“Your father will always fight for you. But there may be people who try to convince you otherwise.””
A pause.
“Don’t believe them.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Not for a long time.
Then Nia whispered:
“She knew.””
I nodded.
“She always knew how to protect us.””
But protection wasn’t over.
Because later that afternoon, Melissa came to my house.
Alone.
No excuses.
No confidence.
Just a woman who looked like she had finally realized what she had helped create.
“I need to talk to you,” she said.
I didn’t invite her inside immediately.
“Why?””
She looked down.
“Because I lied.””
The old version of me would have opened the door.
The version of me who trusted family automatically.
That man was gone.
“What did you lie about?””
Melissa swallowed.
“Evelyn approached me first.””
I said nothing.
“She told me Daniel wasn’t handling grief well. She said the girls needed someone stronger.””
I laughed bitterly.
“And you believed her?””
“I wanted to.””
That answer surprised me.
“Why?””
Melissa looked away.
“Because I was angry.””
“At me?””
“At Elena.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
She wiped her eyes.
“She was always perfect. Everyone loved her. Everyone trusted her. And after she died, everyone expected me to be strong too.””
I listened.
“But that doesn’t excuse what I did,” she said.
No.
It didn’t.
But for the first time, Melissa wasn’t defending herself.
She was admitting something.
“What else do I need to know?””
She took a deep breath.
“Evelyn wasn’t just trying to get control of the trust.””
“What then?””
“She wanted access to information about Elena’s medical records.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
Melissa looked terrified.
“Because Elena found something before she died.””
“What?””
“She believed someone was using her illness and her condition to manipulate people.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
Melissa looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
That was the problem.
There was still another secret.
Another piece missing.
And whoever was behind all of this wasn’t finished.
But now I had something I didn’t have before.
Proof.
The videos.
The documents.
Elena’s warning.
And even Melissa’s confession.
For the first time in months, I wasn’t just reacting.
I was fighting back.
And Brenda was about to learn the biggest mistake she made.

She didn’t just hurt my daughter.
She gave me a reason to uncover everything.
