Chapter 10: The Stranger at the Door
The pounding came again.
Three hard blows shook Aunt Rebecca's front door, followed by a man's voice.
“Open up! I know you're in there!””
Dad immediately moved between me and the hallway.
“Malik, take Maya and Claire into the kitchen.””
Claire stood frozen beside the dining table, staring at the photograph in her hand. The name on the back seemed to have drained every drop of color from her face.
Vanessa, meanwhile, had begun shaking.
“Don't open that door,” she whispered.
Dad turned toward her.
“Who is it?””
“I don't know.””
“You recognized his voice.””
“No, I didn't.””
The man struck the door again.
“Daniel Carter! We need to talk about the hospital records!””
Dad's expression changed.
He walked toward the entrance, but Rebecca caught his arm.
“Wait. You don't know who that is.””
“I know he knows my name.””
“And that's exactly why you shouldn't open the door without checking.””
Rebecca peered through the sidelight window.
She stepped backward.
“Oh, my God.””
“What?”” Malik demanded.
“It's Dr. Whitmore.””
Dad stared at her.
“The doctor from the hospital?””
Rebecca nodded.
Outside, the pounding stopped.
Then the man's voice softened.
“Daniel, please. I know what you've found. And if you want to know what happened to the babies, you need to hear it from me before someone else gets hurt.””
Dad opened the door but kept the chain secured.
An elderly man stood on the porch, his silver hair damp from the evening rain. He wore a dark overcoat and held a battered leather briefcase against his chest.
His eyes moved past Dad.
When he saw Vanessa, he closed them briefly.
“You shouldn't be here,” he said.
Vanessa backed away from the doorway.
“Neither should you.””
Dr. Whitmore looked at the photograph in Claire's hand.
“Where did you get that?””
Claire lifted her chin.
“From the woman who adopted me.””
“Then she should have destroyed it.””
Dad's voice turned icy.
“Don't you dare tell us what to do with our family's belongings.””
Dr. Whitmore looked at him with exhausted eyes.
“I understand your anger.””
“No, you don't. Someone used a pregnancy test to make me believe my twelve-year-old daughter had done something shameful. My wife lied about a missing baby.
Now you're standing on my sister-in-law's porch telling me to destroy evidence. Start explaining.””
The doctor looked at Vanessa.
She shook her head desperately.
“Don't,” she whispered.
He ignored her.
“May I come inside?””
Dad hesitated, then removed the chain.
Dr. Whitmore stepped into the hallway and placed his briefcase on the floor.
He looked at me.
“You must be Maya.””
I moved closer to Malik.
“Yes.””
“I treated your mother before you were born.””
“Did you deliver me?””
He hesitated.
“Yes.””
“Then why does my birth record have another baby's name on it?””
The doctor lowered his eyes.
“Because your birth record was altered.””
Dad went completely still.
“What did you just say?””
Dr. Whitmore sat heavily on the nearest chair.
“Twenty years ago, Margaret Hayes arranged for two infants to be placed with families who had agreed to adopt them. One child was born to Laura Carter. The other was Margaret's granddaughter.””
Claire stepped forward.
“My biological mother?””
“Yes.””
“Then who was my father?””
The doctor looked at her.
“I don't know.””
Claire's hands curled into fists.
“You expect me to believe you delivered me and don't know who my father was?””
“I delivered both babies. I was responsible for their medical care, not their family histories.””
Dad leaned over him.
“Why were the records changed?””
The doctor rubbed his hands together.
“There was an identification error in the nursery. Two bracelets were switched during an emergency evacuation. By the time the mistake was discovered, Margaret had already begun arranging the adoptions.””
Rebecca covered her mouth.
“Good Lord.””
Dr. Whitmore continued.
“Margaret was terrified that the error would expose an arrangement she had made without the biological parents' consent. She pressured me to correct the records quietly.””
“Correct them?”” Malik repeated.
“You just admitted they were altered.””
“I know what I did.””
“You falsified medical records.””
“Yes.””
The word landed heavily.
Dad's face darkened.
“Which baby was mine?””
The doctor opened his briefcase.
He removed a thin folder and placed it on the table.
“According to the original nursery log, Laura's daughter was assigned identification number 214. Margaret's granddaughter was assigned 215.””
Claire stared at the paper.
“But both records in the suitcase said 214.””
“Because the numbers were changed after the incident.””
Dad gripped the table.
“Where is my daughter?””
Dr. Whitmore looked at Claire.
Then at me.
“I believe she's sitting in this room.””
Claire staggered backward.
“No.””
Vanessa began sobbing.
“No, no, no.””
I couldn't move.
Dad stared at the doctor.
“Explain.””
“The bracelet on the baby in the photograph belonged to the child originally assigned to Room 214. That child was Laura's daughter. But the baby discharged to Daniel and Laura was wearing the other child's bracelet.””
Rebecca sank into a chair.
“So Maya was raised by the wrong family?””
The doctor shook his head slowly.
“No. Maya was born to Laura. The confusion concerns the other baby.””
Claire pressed a hand over her mouth.
“Then who am I?””
The doctor looked at Vanessa.
“That's what we've been trying to establish.””
Vanessa suddenly stood.
“That's enough!””
She grabbed the folder and threw it across the room.
Pages scattered across the carpet.
“You don't get to come here after twenty years and destroy everything!””
Dr. Whitmore didn't move.
“You destroyed it yourself when you planted that test.””
Dad turned toward her.
“Sit down.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You don't understand. I was trying to protect you!””
“From what?””
She looked at Claire.
Then she looked at me.
Finally, she whispered, “From discovering that Margaret didn't just arrange an adoption.””
The doctor slowly rose.
“Vanessa, don't.””
She laughed bitterly.
“Why? You've already confessed to falsifying the records.””
Dad stepped closer.
“What did Margaret do?””
Vanessa's tears spilled over.
“She didn't adopt the second baby out to a stranger.””
She pointed at Claire.
“She gave that baby to my mother.””
Claire went rigid.
The doctor closed his eyes.
Vanessa's voice broke.
“And my mother raised her as me.””
For several seconds, no one spoke.
Then Claire whispered, “What?””
Vanessa turned toward her.
“The baby born to Margaret was given to another family. The baby born to Laura was supposed to be adopted. But the records were switched, and my mother took home the wrong child.””
Claire stared at her.
“You're saying I'm your biological sister?””
Vanessa nodded.
“And Maya is Daniel's biological daughter. The baby who was supposed to be placed with my mother was Laura's daughter.””
Dad's voice was barely audible.
“Then who was the other baby?””
Vanessa looked at the photograph on the floor.
“The girl whose name was crossed out.””
She swallowed.
“Her name was Eleanor.””
Dr. Whitmore's face went white.
Vanessa noticed.
“You know that name, don't you?””
The doctor said nothing.
She stepped toward him.
“Tell them what happened to Eleanor.””
He looked at Dad.
Then at Claire.
May you like
Finally, he whispered, “Eleanor never left the hospital.””
And from the expression on his face, I knew the worst part of the story was still ahead.
