Chapter 4: The Truth Behind the Receipt
Monica's silence lasted only three seconds.
Then she reached for the pawn-shop receipt.
“Give me that, Darius. You're making a terrible situation worse.””
Darius pulled the paper away.
“Worse than what, Monica? Worse than making my mother sell the last thing she had from my father?””
Monica glanced toward the dining room. The guests remained frozen around the Thanksgiving table, surrounded by roasted turkey, polished silverware, and plates of food nobody seemed interested in eating anymore.
She forced a laugh.
“This is ridiculous. Loretta is an adult. Nobody forced her to go anywhere.””
I watched my son study his wife's face.
For years, I had hoped that if Darius ever saw Monica's cruelty clearly enough, he would recognize it for what it was. Now that moment had arrived, and I was frightened by how little I wanted to witness it.
Not because I wanted to protect Monica.
Because I didn't know whether my son could bear the truth.
“Mom,” Darius said without looking away from his wife, “tell me exactly what happened.””
Monica interrupted.
“She volunteered to help. I mentioned that we had expenses, and she immediately offered to contribute.””
“That isn't what she told me,” Darius replied.
“Then she's confused.””
I straightened on the stool.
“I'm not confused, Monica.””
She turned toward me sharply.
“Loretta, please don't do this.””
“Do what?””
“Turn my husband against me because you didn't get your way.””
I stared at her.
“My way?””
I gestured toward the tray on the floor.
“Is that what you think this is about? A chair?””
Monica's lips tightened.
“You've always wanted to be the center of attention.””
“No,” I said.
“I wanted to eat Thanksgiving dinner with my family.””
Malik moved closer and slipped his hand into mine.
Darius looked down at our joined hands. Something in his expression changed.
“Monica,” he said, “what did you tell my mother about the money?””
She exhaled impatiently.
“I told her we needed help making Thanksgiving special.””
“And the ring?””
“I didn't tell her to pawn the ring!””
“Then why did she do it?””
“Because she wanted to help you!””
Darius shook his head.
“Help me with what?””
Monica looked toward the dining room again.
“Your business.””
“What about my business?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation was small, but Darius noticed it.
He stepped closer.
“What business expense required exactly twenty-four hundred dollars yesterday?””
Monica's face changed.
I had never seen her look so uncertain.
“I don't remember the exact amount.””
“You told Mom the amount.””
“Darius, this is not the time.””
“Then tell me when.””
She folded her arms tightly.
“You're humiliating me in front of your clients.””
He looked toward Richard.
“Richard, would you mind giving us a few minutes?””
Richard nodded.
“Of course.””
The guests began moving away from the table, speaking in low voices. One woman paused beside me.
“I'm sorry this happened to you,” she whispered.
I thanked her quietly.
Monica watched them leave as if each departing guest were another personal betrayal.
When the dining room finally emptied, Darius shut the kitchen door halfway.
“Now,” he said, “we're going to talk.””
Monica immediately lifted her chin.
“You're acting like I'm some kind of criminal.””
“I'm asking you a question.””
“And I'm telling you that your mother offered to help.””
Darius placed the receipts on the island.
“Then why did she pay for almost eight hundred dollars in groceries?””
“Because she wanted to.””
“Why did she buy the flowers?””
“Because she wanted to.””
“Why did she pay for the desserts, the turkey, and the catering supplies?””
Monica threw her hands up.
“Because she's obsessed with proving she's the better parent!””
The kitchen went silent.
I felt Malik's fingers tighten around mine.
Darius stared at his wife.
“You think my mother bought groceries to compete with you?””
“Don't twist my words.””
“You just said it.””
“Because she does this constantly! She reminds everyone how she raised you. She talks about working two jobs, paying your tuition, helping you get started. Do you know how exhausting it is to have another woman constantly reminding me that she was here first?””
I looked at her in disbelief.
“I never asked you to compete with me.””
“You didn't have to!””
Her voice cracked through the kitchen.
“You walk into a room and everybody praises you. Poor Loretta. Wonderful Loretta.
The mother who sacrificed everything. And what am I supposed to be? The selfish wife who doesn't appreciate you?””
Darius stared at her for a long moment.
“Is that why you put her on the floor?””
Monica looked away.
“Don't be dramatic.””
“Is that why?””
“I wanted the evening to go smoothly!””
“So you humiliated my mother?””
“I didn't think it would become such a big deal!””
Darius looked at the tray.
Then he looked at me.
His eyes filled with tears, but I couldn't reach for him yet.
Not this time.
He had to understand that remorse wasn't the same as repair.
“Mom,” he whispered, “I should have stood up for you.””
“Yes,” I replied.
He nodded slowly.
“I know.””
Monica grabbed her purse from the counter.
“I'm done with this conversation.””
“Where are you going?”” Darius asked.
“Somewhere I don't have to defend myself against two people who have decided I'm the villain.””
She marched toward the dining room.
But before she reached the doorway, Darius spoke again.
“One more question.””
She stopped without turning around.
“What happened to the money from the ring?””
Monica's shoulders stiffened.
“I used it for household expenses.””
“Which ones?””
She turned around.
“Why are you treating me like this?””
“Because you asked my mother to sacrifice something irreplaceable. I want to know where the money went.””
Monica stared at him.
Then, slowly, she reached into her purse and pulled out her phone.
“I can show you,” she said.
Darius held out his hand.
She unlocked the screen and placed the phone in his palm.
He looked down.
His expression shifted from anger to confusion.
Then to disbelief.
On the screen was a payment confirmation dated the previous afternoon.
The recipient wasn't a catering company.
It wasn't a grocery store.
It wasn't a business expense.
It was a luxury jewelry boutique.
The amount was exactly $2,400.
Darius looked up.
“What did you buy?””
Monica's mouth opened.
Before she could answer, Malik pointed toward her left wrist.
“Dad,” he whispered, “is that the bracelet Grandma's money paid for?””
May you like
Monica instinctively covered the gold bracelet with her other hand.
And for the first time that afternoon, she had absolutely nothing to say.
