Chapter 6: The Deadline Was Real
Vanessa turned her phone facedown so quickly that it struck the marble with a sharp crack.
I didn't reach for it.
I didn't need to.
I had already seen Jordan's message.
"Why is he asking whether I have the sealed record?"" I said.
Vanessa swallowed.
"Because he's worried.""
"About what?""
"I don't know.""
I let out a slow breath.
"That answer is getting old.""
She looked at me with exhausted anger.
"You think this is easy for me? He's my son. He's in trouble, and everyone is treating him like he's already guilty.""
"Then tell me what kind of trouble he's in.""
"I can't.""
"Why not?""
"Because I promised him I wouldn't tell anyone!""
I stared at her.
"You promised him secrecy about a plan involving my properties?""
She wiped her cheeks.
"I didn't know it would get this far.""
"How far did you think it would go?""
She said nothing.
Maya pulled out a chair and sat down, her phone still in her hand.
"Mom, Jordan asked me for money three weeks ago," she said.
Vanessa turned toward her.
"What?""
"He said his company had a temporary cash-flow problem. He wanted me to lend him eight thousand dollars.""
I looked at my daughter.
"Did you give him the money?""
"No. I asked him what the money was for, and he got angry.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because you always say Jordan is building something important and we should support him. I didn't want another argument.""
Maya looked down at her hands.
"He told me he'd pay it back in a month. When I asked for something in writing, he said I was treating him like a stranger.""
I felt a dull pressure behind my ribs.
Jordan had borrowed money from me before. He had asked for help with his car, a business course, and a deposit on an apartment. I had helped because he was Vanessa's son and because I believed a family should give people opportunities to improve their lives.
I had never expected him to repay every favor.
But there was a difference between helping someone and allowing them to use your name without permission.
"Did he ever tell you why he needed the money?"" I asked Maya.
"He said a deal was about to close.""
"What deal?""
"He wouldn't explain.""
Vanessa walked to the sink and gripped its edge.
"Jordan said the company was going through a difficult period," she muttered.
I turned toward her.
"You knew about the company.""
"Of course I knew.""
"You knew he needed money.""
"Yes.""
"You knew he wanted my properties transferred.""
She closed her eyes.
"Yes.""
"And you still told me this morning that he simply deserved them.""
Her shoulders sagged.
"I was trying to keep him from losing everything.""
"By putting everything I own at risk?""
She turned around, tears shining on her cheeks.
"You don't understand what happens when a person makes a promise they can't keep.""
I stared at her.
"Then explain it to me.""
She opened her mouth, but her phone began vibrating again.
Jordan was calling.
Vanessa looked at the screen and pressed the side button to silence it.
I held out my hand.
"Answer him.""
"No.""
"Put him on speaker.""
"I'm not doing that.""
"Then I'll call him myself.""
I took my phone from the counter and opened Jordan's contact.
Vanessa stepped toward me.
"Please don't.""
I stopped.
For a moment, I saw something in her face that went beyond fear of embarrassment. She looked genuinely terrified of what might happen if Jordan and I spoke directly.
That frightened me more than her shouting had.
I pressed the call button.
Jordan answered after three rings.
"Mom?"" he said.
"It's Darius.""
Silence.
Then his voice changed.
"Hey, Darius. What's going on?""
"You tell me.""
"I don't know what you mean.""
"Your mother brought three property-transfer requests to my breakfast table. All three contain my signature. I never signed them.""
He exhaled sharply.
"Okay. Listen, I can explain.""
"Then explain.""
"It's not what it looks like.""
"That is what people say when they don't want to explain what something looks like.""
He paused.
I could hear traffic in the background.
"Those documents were supposed to be preliminary," he said.
"Preliminary to what?""
"An arrangement.""
"What arrangement?""
"Something that would benefit everybody.""
"How would transferring three properties into your name benefit everybody?""
He lowered his voice.
"I needed collateral.""
The word seemed to suck all the air out of the kitchen.
I gripped the phone tighter.
"Collateral for what?""
"I was going to explain everything after the paperwork was sorted out.""
"No. You're going to explain it now.""
Jordan sighed.
"Darius, I've got people expecting money. I've got contracts, obligations, and a company that's been struggling. I was trying to secure an opportunity that could have changed things for all of us.""
"Using properties you don't own?""
"I wasn't trying to steal anything!""
"Then why is my signature on the documents?""
He didn't answer.
I looked at Vanessa.
She had turned away, pressing a tissue against her mouth.
"Jordan," I said, "did you sign my name?""
"I didn't say that.""
"Did you prepare or submit documents carrying my signature without my permission?""
"I told you, they were preliminary.""
"That wasn't my question.""
He became defensive.
"Why are you talking to me like I'm some criminal? You're supposed to be family.""
"Family doesn't get to use my name to secure debts I never agreed to take on.""
"I was going to make it right!""
"How?""
He hesitated.
Then he said, "I just needed time.""
"Time until when?""
"Friday.""
I glanced at Maya.
She had heard him.
"Why Friday?"" I asked.
Jordan went quiet.
"Jordan?""
"I can't talk about that over the phone.""
"You've had plenty of time to talk to my wife about it.""
"Mom was trying to help me.""
"By hiding what you were doing?""
He raised his voice.
"She was trying to keep you from overreacting!""
I looked across the kitchen at Vanessa.
Her eyes were closed.
"Tell me what happens Friday," I demanded.
Jordan's voice dropped.
"If I don't deliver the collateral, I lose the deal. The company could collapse. I could lose everything I've invested.""
"How much money are we talking about?""
He didn't answer.
"Jordan, how much?""
"More than I have.""
"That's not a number.""
"I can't pay it back right now.""
I felt my anger sharpen into something colder.
"Did you tell anyone that you owned my properties?""
He went silent again.
That silence was enough to make my stomach twist.
"Jordan.""
Finally, he said, "I told them the properties were going to be transferred.""
"By whom?""
"By you.""
I closed my eyes for a second.
He had not merely asked for help.
He had represented my future actions to other people as though they were already guaranteed.
"Did you show them these documents?""
"I sent copies.""
"With my signature?""
"I sent what I had.""
Maya stood up so abruptly that her chair scraped across the floor.
Vanessa whispered, "Oh, God.""
I ignored them both.
"Who are these people, Jordan?""
"I can't give you their names.""
"Why?""
"Because it will make things worse.""
"Things are already worse.""
He lowered his voice further.
"Look, I never wanted you to lose anything. I just needed the properties listed as security until the deal closed. Once I got the money, I could have fixed everything.""
"Without asking me?""
"I knew you'd say no.""
The honesty of that answer stunned me.
I stared at the phone.
Jordan had known I would refuse.
He had understood that the properties belonged to me, that I had not agreed to transfer them, and that I would never voluntarily put my daughter's future at risk to rescue a business I knew nothing about.
So he had decided to move forward without my consent.
"You're right," I said quietly.
"I would have said no.""
He sounded frustrated.
"Because you never give me a chance!""
"I gave you money. I gave you advice. I helped you when you asked. What I didn't give you was permission to use my name.""
"You have more than enough!""
"And that makes it yours?""
"No!""
"Then stop acting like it does.""
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Finally, I asked, "What is the sealed county record?""
Jordan's breathing changed.
"Where did you get that?""
"Answer the question.""
"You weren't supposed to have it.""
Vanessa covered her face with both hands.
I felt a cold certainty settle over me.
"Why is your name on the recipient line?""
Jordan said nothing.
"Jordan, did you request a record involving my commercial property six weeks ago?""
He ended the call.
I stared at the screen.
The call timer stopped.
Maya slowly lowered herself into her chair.
Vanessa began crying again, this time without trying to hide it.
I placed my phone on the marble.
"He's in deeper trouble than you told me," I said.
She shook her head.
"I wanted to believe he could fix it.""
"That doesn't explain the sealed record.""
She pressed her hands against her cheeks.
"He told me the record would prove he had a legitimate interest in the building.""
"What legitimate interest?""
"I don't know!""
"Then why did you help him?""
"Because he said everything would be ruined if I didn't!""
I stared at her.
"Did he threaten you?""
"No.""
"Did he threaten Maya?""
"No!""
"Then what did he say?""
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
"He told me that if the deal failed, people would come after him. He said he could lose his business, his apartment, and everything he had worked for.""
"And you decided my properties should be sacrificed instead.""
She looked down.
"I thought you could help him.""
"I would have helped him if he'd told me the truth.""
"He was ashamed.""
"So you helped him lie.""
She didn't answer.
My phone vibrated.
An email from Robert had arrived.
I opened it immediately.
*The county has confirmed receipt of the relevant records request. The transfer status remains under review. I have also identified a discrepancy involving the earlier reference number. We need to discuss it as soon as possible.*
I read the message twice.
Then another notification appeared beneath it.
This one was from an unfamiliar number.
There was no greeting, no explanation, and no signature.
Only one sentence.
*Tell Darius to stop asking about the sealed record if he wants his family to remain out of this.*
I felt the blood drain from my face.
Maya leaned over my shoulder and read it.
Vanessa saw our expressions.
"What is it?"" she whispered.
I turned the phone toward her.
She read the message.
Then she stumbled backward until her hip struck the counter.
"Who sent that?"" Maya asked.
I looked at the unfamiliar number.
"I don't know.""
Vanessa began shaking her head.
"No. No, no, no.""
I turned toward her.
"Have you seen this number before?""
She stared at the screen as though the words were burning into her eyes.
Then she whispered, "That's the person Jordan said he was trying to protect us from.""
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"Who is it, Vanessa?""
She looked at me, terrified.
"I don't know his real name.""
The phone vibrated once more.
May you like
A second message appeared.
*Friday is the deadline. After that, the decision won't be yours to make.*
