Chapter 8: The Secret Buried Beneath Another Family

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood her.

The words were too impossible.

Too cruel.

Too perfectly designed to destroy everything I trusted.

“My boyfriend’s father.””

My mother’s voice stayed in my mind.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked back at me.

Confusion.

Shock.

Pain.

All three appeared on his face at once.

“What?””

His voice was barely a whisper.

My mother looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He took a step back.

“No, that’s not possible.””

My father immediately looked at him.

And for the first time all night, Robert Callaway and Daniel looked equally afraid.

“Who is your father?”” my mother asked.

Daniel stared at her.

“You know who my father is.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

His expression hardened.

“Then say it.””

The ballroom waited.

Every person.

Every witness.

Every camera.

My mother looked at him.

“Richard Cross.””

The name hit the room like a gunshot.

I felt Daniel go completely still.

Because he knew.

I knew.

Everyone who followed business news knew.

Richard Cross was one of the most powerful defense contractors in the country.

He was a respected philanthropist.

A decorated veteran.

A man who appeared beside politicians and generals.

A man who had donated millions to military causes.

A man who my father had publicly called his closest friend.

And now my mother was saying he was connected to her disappearance.

Daniel shook his head.

“My father died eight years ago.””

My mother looked at him sadly.

“I know.””

“Then how could he have betrayed you?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

Because every time someone hesitated tonight, the truth became worse.

“Because Richard Cross wasn’t the person everyone thought he was.””

Daniel looked at me.

I saw the question in his eyes.

The same question I had.

How could this be real?

How could the man whose son I loved be connected to the nightmare that destroyed my family?

My father spoke quietly.

“Amelia.””

She looked at him.

“Tell her everything.””

My mother’s eyes narrowed.

“Now you want the truth?””

“Yes.””

Her expression softened slightly.

“Why?””

My father looked at me.

“Because she deserves it.””

The words were painful.

Because they were true.

My mother took a deep breath.

“Richard and Robert worked together for years.””

She looked at me.

“They built their public images together. Veterans charities. Military contracts. Foundations.””

I nodded slowly.

“I know.””

“But behind the scenes, there was a disagreement.””

“What kind?””

My mother looked at the dark-blue folder.

“The money.””

The same word.

The same mystery.

“The veteran funds.””

She nodded.

“Richard believed the system belonged to people powerful enough to control it.””

My stomach turned.

“And Dad?””

My mother looked at Robert.

“Your father believed he could stop him.””

I looked at Robert.

The man who had spent years looking like the villain of my childhood suddenly became something more complicated.

Not innocent.

Not forgiven.

But not simple.

“He knew?”” I asked.

My mother nodded.

“He discovered the financial manipulation before I did.””

“Then why didn’t he expose him?””

The question hung in the air.

My father answered.

“Because Richard threatened you.””

My entire body went cold.

“Me?””

Robert nodded.

“He told me if I went public, he would destroy everything you cared about.””

I stared at him.

“So you chose silence.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I chose time.””

I shook my head.

“You keep saying that like it makes a difference.””

“It does.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“It doesn’t.””

The room was silent.

“You let me hate you.””

My father looked down.

“I know.””

“You let me think you were ashamed of me.””

“I know.””

“You let me believe Mom died because you couldn’t save her.””

His face broke.

“I know.””

The anger I had carried for years finally came out.

“Do you know what it feels like to spend your whole life trying to earn love from someone who already decided you weren’t enough?””

My father looked at me.

And for once, he had no defense.

Because there wasn’t one.

Daniel stepped forward.

“I need to understand something.””

Everyone looked at him.

“My father knew about Sara?””

My mother nodded.

“Yes.””

“Did he know about me and Sara?””

Another pause.

I felt my stomach tighten.

My mother looked at him.

“Yes.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“He knew?””

“Yes.””

“And he still let us…”

She looked away.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because he was hurt.

“He knew I loved her.””

My mother said nothing.

“He knew I was close to her.””

Silence.

“And he used me?””

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was obvious.

I reached for Daniel’s hand.

He looked at me.

“I didn’t know.””

“I know.””

But his eyes were full of pain.

“Do you?””

The question hurt.

Because I understood.

Not the betrayal.

But the fear.

The possibility that everything between us had been part of someone else’s plan.

My mother stepped closer.

“Sara, listen to me.””

I looked at her.

“Your relationship with Daniel was real.””

“How do you know?””

“Because Richard underestimated one thing.””

“What?””

She looked at Daniel.

“He thought people could be controlled forever.””

Daniel looked away.

“My father always said emotions made people weak.””

My mother nodded.

“That was his mistake.””

Before anyone could respond, a loud noise came from outside.

A crash.

Then shouting.

Security immediately moved.

The ballroom erupted into panic.

Mayor Whitcomb grabbed the microphone.

“Everyone remain calm.””

But nobody was calm.

Not anymore.

A security officer rushed inside.

“Mayor, we have a situation.””

“What happened?””

“The press is outside.””

“That’s not unusual.””

“No.””

The officer looked nervous.

“They’re not here because of the gala.””

My father’s face changed.

“Why are they here?””

The officer hesitated.

“Someone leaked the files.””

The room went silent.

“What files?”” Mayor Whitcomb asked.

The officer looked at me.

“The Callaway documents.””

My heart sank.

“They’re public?””

“Yes.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

She whispered:

“They wanted this.””

My father stared at her.

“Who?””

She looked around.

At the guests.

At the cameras.

At the chaos.

“They wanted Sara to be forced into the spotlight before she was ready.””

I felt a wave of fear.

“Why?””

My mother looked at me.

“Because now everyone will be watching you.””

The security alarms sounded again.

This time, everyone knew it wasn’t an accident.

A guard ran toward us.

“Mayor!””

“What now?””

He looked at the group.

“There’s someone outside demanding to speak with Major Callaway.””

My father immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

The guard continued.

“He says he has proof about Richard Cross.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked toward the doors.

“Who?””

The guard swallowed.

“He says his name is…”

A pause.

My heart started racing.

“…Jonathan Cross.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“No.””

My mother looked terrified.

“Impossible.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Who is Jonathan Cross?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

The guard spoke again.

“He says he’s Richard Cross’s son.””

Daniel whispered:

“I don’t have a brother.””

The doors slowly opened.

A man stepped inside.

He looked almost identical to Daniel.

Same eyes.

Same features.

But his expression was colder.

He looked directly at me.

“Sara Callaway.””

The room went silent.

“I’m the reason your mother disappeared.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The stranger looked at him.

And smiled sadly.

“Your father’s biggest secret.””

May you like

Then he looked back at me.

“And the person who knows what really happened the night Amelia Callaway died.””
