Chapter 1: The Untouched Glass

“Get up! You’re embarrassing me!””

Elena hit the marble floor on both knees.

The first glass shattered beside her. The second tipped over the edge of the engagement table and rolled in a slow circle before stopping against a polished black shoe.

For one suspended second, nobody moved.

Then the ballroom erupted.

Crystal chandeliers glittered above hundreds of Black American guests dressed in tuxedos, satin gowns, diamonds, and tailored suits. A champagne tower stood beneath a wall of white roses. Music continued playing, cheerful and completely wrong for the panic spreading through the room.

Elena's hands shook against the marble.

Victoria grabbed her shoulder.

“Get up,” Victoria hissed.

“Now.””

Elena tried.

Her legs wouldn't cooperate.

Victoria's fingers tightened.

“I said get up.””

Elena looked up at her.

There was something in Victoria's face that made Elena stop breathing.

Not embarrassment.

Fear.

Then a man's voice cut through the noise.

“Let her go.””

Victoria froze.

Dante stood ten feet away.

He hadn't raised his voice.

He didn't need to.

The ballroom seemed to recognize the danger in his silence.

Dante was the kind of man people moved around without being asked. Late thirties, broad shoulders beneath a perfectly fitted black tuxedo, slicked-back hair, trimmed beard, open white shirt beneath his jacket. His expression was controlled, almost calm.

Almost.

Victoria slowly released Elena.

“Dante,” she said, forcing a smile, “it's nothing.””

Dante looked at the broken glass.

Then at Elena.

Then at Victoria.

“What happened?””

“She tripped,” Victoria answered.

Elena's eyes widened.

Dante noticed.

He took one step closer.

“Did she?””

Victoria's smile disappeared.

“She's a maid, Dante. She's exhausted. That's all.””

Elena lowered her head.

Dante's gaze dropped to the floor beside her hand.

One glass hadn't broken.

A short crystal tumbler sat untouched beside Elena's fingers.

Water.

A thin lemon slice floated near the surface.

Dante crouched and picked it up.

Victoria's face changed instantly.

“Dante, leave that.””

He looked at her.

The music suddenly seemed louder.

Dante turned the glass slowly between his fingers. Near the bottom was a faint cloudy residue that hadn't dissolved completely.

His eyes narrowed.

He lifted it toward his nose.

Victoria stepped forward.

“Dante.””

He smelled it.

Her breathing changed.

Dante noticed that too.

“What is it?””

“Water,” Victoria said quickly.

“Water doesn't usually make you nervous.””

“I’m not nervous.””

Dante looked at her for another second.

Then he started to raise the glass toward his mouth.

Victoria grabbed his wrist.

“Don't.””

The word came out too quickly.

Too desperately.

Silence swallowed the nearest tables.

Dante looked down at her hand.

Then back at her face.

“Why are you scared of this glass?””

Victoria released him.

“I just don't want you drinking something that's been sitting on the floor.””

“It wasn't on the floor.””

She swallowed.

Dante slowly lowered himself beside Elena.

His voice softened.

“What happened?””

Elena stared at the marble.

“Look at me.””

She did.

Dante's eyes were steady.

“What happened?””

Elena's lips trembled.

Victoria stepped closer.

“Dante, this is ridiculous.””

Elena flinched.

Dante saw it.

“Victoria.””

She stopped.

“Give us a minute.””

Victoria's jaw tightened.

“This is my engagement party.””

“I know.””

“And you're interrogating a maid in front of our guests.””

“I said give us a minute.””

Victoria stared at him.

For the first time that night, she looked less like a bride and more like someone trapped.

She turned away.

Dante leaned closer to Elena.

“Tell me the truth.””

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't know.””

“Didn't know what?””

“She told me it was for you.””

Dante's expression hardened.

“Who?””

Elena looked toward Victoria.

Victoria had her back turned.

Elena lowered her voice until it was barely audible.

“She made me carry that drink.””

Dante looked at the glass.

Then at Victoria.

“For who?””

Elena's tears slipped down her cheeks.

“For you.””

Victoria went completely pale.

Dante slowly stood.

The room seemed to shrink around him.

“What did you put in it?””

Victoria opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Dante took one step toward her.

“Victoria.””

She stared at him.

Her lips parted.

And then—

A champagne flute slipped from someone's hand across the ballroom.

It shattered.

Everyone turned toward the sound.

When Dante looked back at Victoria, she was no longer watching him.

She was staring at Elena.

May you like

Like she had just realized the maid knew something else.

Something much worse.
