Chapter 7: The Truth Behind the Accident

The voice outside the door changed everything.

Not because it was loud.

Not because it sounded threatening.

Because Karen recognized it.

And everyone saw that recognition on her face.

She looked at the door like it wasn’t an entrance anymore.

It was a trap.

Dad noticed immediately.

“Who is that?””

Karen didn’t answer.

“Karen.””

Her lips parted.

But no sound came out.

Richard stepped away from the doorway.

“Don’t let him control the conversation.””

Dad looked at him.

“You know who he is.””

Richard nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then tell me.””

Richard looked toward the door.

“His name is Michael Hayes.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But Dad reacted.

His face changed.

“Hayes?””

Richard nodded.

“Your old business partner.””

Dad stared.

“I haven’t seen him in years.””

Karen whispered:

“You weren’t supposed to.””

Everyone looked at her.

She immediately looked down.

Too late.

Dad heard it.

“What do you mean?””

Karen shook her head.

“I didn’t mean—”

“Yes, you did.””

Dad walked toward her.

“What does Michael Hayes have to do with my wife?””

Karen’s eyes filled with tears.

Not real ones.

I knew that now.

I knew the difference.

She used tears the way other people used weapons.

“I don’t know why everyone is attacking me.””

Richard let out a quiet breath.

“Still doing it.””

Karen turned toward him.

“You don’t know anything about me.””

Richard looked at her.

“I know exactly who you are.””

The doorbell rang again.

This time, Michael spoke louder.

“Karen, open the door.””

Dad looked at the entrance.

Then back at Karen.

“You invited him here?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

Richard looked at Emily.

“Call the police.””

Karen’s eyes widened.

“No.””

Dad turned.

“Why not?””

She froze.

Because she had no answer.

Emily pulled out her phone.

Karen immediately moved.

“Wait.””

Nobody moved.

Everyone watched her.

And I realized something.

Karen wasn’t afraid of the police.

She was afraid of what the police would find.

Emily stepped away and made the call.

Dad unlocked the door.

Richard reached out.

“David.””

My father stopped.

“What?””

“Before you open that door, understand something.””

Richard looked serious.

“Michael doesn’t come anywhere unless he believes he can control what happens next.””

Dad stared at him.

“And what does he think he can control?””

Richard looked at Karen.

“The evidence.””

The door opened.

A man stood outside.

He looked older than Dad.

Well dressed.

Expensive coat.

Gray hair.

A smile that looked practiced.

The kind of smile people wore when they wanted others to trust them.

“David.””

My father didn’t move.

“Michael.””

Michael looked around.

His eyes landed on Emily.

Then Richard.

Then me.

Then the phone.

His smile disappeared.

Only for a moment.

But I saw it.

“You found it.””

Dad stepped forward.

“How do you know about the phone?””

Michael sighed.

“I was hoping we could avoid this.””

Dad laughed.

“After years of secrets, you’re hoping to avoid this?””

Michael looked at Karen.

She looked away.

That was enough.

Dad saw it.

“You knew he was coming.””

Karen shook her head.

“No.””

Michael interrupted.

“She didn’t know.””

Everyone looked at him.

He continued:

“She called me.””

Karen stared.

“Michael.””

Dad turned toward her.

“You called him?””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

Karen didn’t answer.

Michael stepped inside.

“I think everyone needs to calm down.””

Richard laughed.

“Still using that line?””

Michael looked at him.

“You should have stayed away.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“And you should have stayed out of their lives.””

Dad looked between them.

“I want the truth.””

Nobody argued.

Nobody interrupted.

Because everyone knew that moment had arrived.

Michael sighed.

“Your wife discovered financial problems.””

Dad’s jaw tightened.

“My wife?””

“Yes.””

“Problems you created?””

Michael didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Dad looked sick.

“I trusted you.””

Michael looked away.

“You trusted too easily.””

The words hurt.

Because they were exactly what my mother had warned about.

Dad stepped closer.

“What happened to my wife?””

The room changed.

Even Karen stopped moving.

Michael’s expression became careful.

“I don’t know what you’ve been told.””

“Answer me.””

“David—”

“What happened?””

Michael looked at Karen.

And for a second, I thought he might protect her.

But then he said:

“She found out.””

Dad went still.

“Found out what?””

Michael looked down.

“The money. The accounts. The agreements.””

Emily spoke.

“You mean the fraud.””

Michael looked at her.

“Careful.””

“No.””

Emily stepped forward.

“Your friend’s wife spent months collecting proof that both of you were hiding financial information.””

Dad looked at Karen.

“Both of you?””

Karen whispered:

“David.””

He ignored her.

“Were you involved?””

The question hurt more than any accusation.

Because he wasn’t asking because he hated her.

He was asking because he needed the answer.

Karen looked at him.

“I can explain.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She swallowed.

“I made mistakes.””

Dad closed his eyes.

“Mistakes?””

Michael interrupted.

“This isn’t helping.””

Dad turned.

“You don’t get to decide what helps me.””

The room became silent.

Michael looked at him.

Then slowly nodded.

“Fine.””

He reached into his coat.

“I brought something.””

Karen’s face changed.

“What?””

Michael pulled out a folder.

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Michael smiled.

“Still protecting them?””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Dad.

“I’m protecting the truth.””

Michael placed the folder on the table.

“Your wife was investigating me.””

Dad stared.

“Why?””

“Because she believed Karen was being manipulated.””

Karen looked down.

The room froze.

I looked at her.

My mother had been right.

But then Michael continued.

“And she was wrong.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

Michael looked at Dad.

“She thought Karen was working with me.””

Karen’s eyes lifted.

“She wasn’t.””

Richard frowned.

“What are you doing?””

Michael ignored him.

“Karen wasn’t the person who started this.””

Dad stared.

“Then who was?””

Michael looked directly at him.

And the answer shocked everyone.

“Your wife.””

My heart stopped.

Dad looked furious.

“What did you say?””

Michael opened the folder.

“She discovered the money was missing and started moving it to protect herself.””

“No.””

The word came from Dad immediately.

Like he couldn’t even allow the possibility into the air.

Michael continued.

“She created the evidence trail.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

Michael pulled out a document.

“She had access.””

Emily stepped forward.

“That’s a lie.””

Michael looked at her.

“You weren’t there.””

“No.””

Emily’s voice became colder.

“But I saw her medical records.””

Dad looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

Emily hesitated.

Then looked at me.

I knew she didn’t want to say it in front of me.

But the truth had already reached me.

It was too late to protect me from it.

“Your wife was afraid someone would frame her.””

Dad looked at the papers.

“She was sick.””

Emily nodded.

“Yes.””

“And scared.””

“Yes.””

“But she wasn’t lying.””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

Michael suddenly laughed.

A quiet laugh.

“You’re all still doing exactly what she wanted.””

Dad looked at him.

“What?””

“She made everyone choose sides.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Michael smiled.

“You know what the funniest part is?””

Nobody answered.

He looked at the phone.

“Your wife didn’t leave that video because she trusted Lily.””

My stomach dropped.

Dad looked at him.

“Why then?””

Michael smiled.

“Because she knew Lily would find it.””

Silence.

The words felt wrong.

Cold.

Like someone had opened a door to something darker.

Michael looked at me.

“She knew you would look for answers.””

I held the phone tighter.

My mother didn’t leave it because I was supposed to solve a mystery.

She left it because she knew I would need help.

Michael stepped closer.

“And she knew exactly who would come looking.””

Dad moved between us.

“Stay away from my daughter.””

Michael stopped.

Then smiled.

“Good.””

Dad frowned.

“What?””

“Because now you’re finally protecting her.””

Nobody understood.

Until Michael pointed at the phone.

“Play the rest of the video.””

I looked down.

The screen was still black.

Battery almost dead.

Michael whispered:

“Your wife recorded one final message.””

Emily looked shocked.

“There was another?””

Michael nodded.

Karen suddenly spoke.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

She looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

Dad stared at her.

“Why did you say no?””

Karen looked at the phone.

Then at me.

And quietly said:

“Because if Lily watches it…”

May you like

Her voice broke.

“…she’ll know what really happened the night her mother died.””
