The Wallet at the Gate / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9: What Daniel Left Behind

The chain barrier lifted three inches.

Then stopped.

Lewis backed away.

“Sir, I didn't activate it.””

Harris stared at the control panel.

The system showed no operator.

Amelia pulled Ruby close.

“Get away from the gate.””

Harris didn't move.

He crouched beside the concrete foundation.

The metal plate remained half-buried.

D.H.

The date.

Eight years ago.

He ran his fingers around the edges.

“There's something underneath.””

Lewis knelt beside him.

“Stand back.””

He pried the plate loose.

A narrow compartment appeared beneath it.

Inside was a small metal box.

Harris stared.

Daniel had always hidden things in plain sight.

A locker key.

A coffee tin.

A book behind a wall.

He had never trusted electronic storage.

Harris lifted the box.

There was no lock.

Only a handwritten label.

*FOR HARRIS — WHEN SHE RETURNS.*

His hands began shaking.

Amelia saw it.

“He knew.””

Harris looked at her.

“He knew Ruby would come here.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew I couldn't protect her forever.””

Harris opened the box.

Inside were three things.

A military dog tag.

A flash drive.

And a folded letter.

Ruby stepped closer.

“Is that from my dad?””

Harris unfolded the letter.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Daniel.

Harris read the first line.

*Harris, if Amelia brings the girl to the base, do not trust the records.*

His eyes moved down the page.

*Do not trust Mercer.*

Harris looked toward the older officer.

Mercer had disappeared.

Lewis spun around.

“Where did he go?””

The gate office door stood open.

Mercer was gone.

Harris folded the letter.

“Find him.””

Lewis moved toward the building.

Harris kept reading.

The letter continued:

*Ruby is not R-08. That was only the number they gave her. Her real identity was erased because she was the only child who could expose the program.*

Ruby stared at him.

“What program?””

Harris lowered the letter.

“I don't know yet.””

Amelia whispered, “Keep reading.””

He did.

*The people behind it used military records to create new identities. They weren't stealing children. They were replacing them.*

Harris's face tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Amelia looked away.

Ruby didn't.

“Tell me.””

Amelia swallowed.

“They took children from families they couldn't control.””

Ruby stared at her.

“And put us somewhere else?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“So no one could trace you.””

Harris looked at the letter again.

Daniel had written:

*Ruby's original birth record is hidden inside the base archive. File R-08.*

Harris looked up.

“Archive.””

Amelia nodded.

“It's still there?””

“If Mercer didn't destroy it.””

Harris folded the letter.

“We're going.””

Amelia grabbed his arm.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because that's exactly where they'll expect us.””

“Then where do we go?””

She looked toward the road.

“Somewhere Daniel prepared.””

Harris stared at her.

“You know where?””

“No.””

“You just said he prepared somewhere.””

“I know the message. I don't know the location.””

Ruby interrupted.

“I do.””

Both adults looked at her.

Ruby reached into her backpack.

“I found this in Mom's room.””

She pulled out a small brass key.

Harris took it.

A number was engraved on it.

*214.*

Amelia stared.

“Where did you get that?””

“Under your mattress.””

Amelia's face went pale.

“I thought it was gone.””

“What is it?””

“A storage key.””

“Where?””

Amelia shook her head.

“Bus station lockers.””

Harris looked toward the bus stop.

The same place Ruby had found the wallet.

“The wallet wasn't random.””

Amelia nodded.

“No.””

“Daniel put it there.””

“I think so.””

Harris looked at the cash.

“Why fill a wallet with money?””

“So whoever found it would open it.””

“And find the message.””

Ruby looked at the photograph.

“The photograph too.””

Amelia stared at her.

Ruby continued.

“He wanted me to bring all of this here.””

Harris looked at the little girl.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Harris didn't answer.

The flash drive in his hand suddenly vibrated.

A tiny green light turned on.

Lewis returned.

“Colonel, the archive room just opened.””

Harris looked at him.

“No one has access.””

Lewis shook his head.

“Someone does.””

The base intercom crackled.

Then a man's voice filled the entrance.

“Colonel Harris.””

Harris froze.

It was the same voice from the phone.

Ruby whispered,

“Dad.””

The intercom continued.

“You have ten minutes.””

Harris stepped toward the speaker.

“Daniel?””

Silence.

Then:

“Bring Ruby alone.””

Amelia shook her head.

“No.””

Harris looked at the security monitor.

The archive corridor appeared on screen.

At the end stood a man in military uniform.

His face was hidden in shadow.

Harris stared.

The man slowly stepped into the light.

Ruby gasped.

“It can't be.””

Harris felt the blood drain from his face.

The man on the monitor looked exactly like the soldier in the undamaged photograph.

Exactly like Daniel Harris.

But the date on the screen was today.

The voice came through the intercom one final time.

“Brother, you have ten minutes to decide whether you want the truth.””

May you like

The screen went black.

And somewhere inside the base, a door slammed shut.
