Chapter 6: The Secret Behind the Harris Name

Marcus Harris had faced enemy fire.

He had walked through burning buildings.

He had carried wounded soldiers through impossible situations.

But nothing prepared him for those two words.

*Your father.*

For several seconds, he simply stared at Amelia.

His mind rejected it before his heart could even begin to understand.

“My father?””

Amelia nodded slowly.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

The response came instantly.

Not because he didn’t believe her.

Because he did.

And that scared him.

“My father died when I was seventeen.””

Amelia looked down.

“That’s what you were told.””

Marcus felt his hands tighten.

“Everyone knew.””

“Everyone?””

“Yes.””

He stood up.

“My entire family. The military. Everyone.””

Amelia’s voice became quiet.

“Then everyone was part of the lie.””

The room became painfully silent.

Ruby sat in the corner, coloring quietly, unaware that every word was changing the history of the people around her.

Marcus looked toward her.

Then lowered his voice.

“Not here.””

Amelia understood immediately.

They stepped into the hallway outside the visitor center.

Marcus closed the door behind them.

“Start from the beginning.””

Amelia took a breath.

“I never met your father.””

“Then how do you know?””

“Because Daniel told me.””

Marcus froze.

“Daniel.””

“Yes.””

“Daniel knew my father?””

“He knew what your father was involved in.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Amelia looked at him.

“Your father wasn’t just a military officer.””

The colonel said nothing.

“He was part of the intelligence division before you ever joined.””

Marcus frowned.

“My father was a mechanic.””

“That’s what he wanted you to believe.””

The words hit him.

His childhood memories shifted.

The quiet man who always came home late.

The locked office.

The phone calls he wasn’t allowed to answer.

The constant warnings.

Don’t ask questions.

Some things are safer left alone.

Marcus had spent years thinking his father was distant.

Now he wondered if he had simply been afraid.

“What was his name?””

Amelia hesitated.

“Thomas Harris.””

Marcus swallowed.

Hearing his father’s name in this context felt wrong.

“What did he do?””

“He discovered the same thing I discovered years later.””

“The stolen intelligence.””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked away.

“Why would he hide that from me?””

“Because he thought he was protecting you.””

A bitter smile crossed Marcus’s face.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Amelia looked at him.

“Because sometimes the truth really does put people in danger.””

“Then why tell me now?””

Her eyes moved toward the room where Ruby sat.

“Because they found her.””

That sentence changed everything.

Marcus looked through the window at his daughter.

His daughter.

The child who had spent her entire life being hidden from people who wanted something from her.

“Who are they?””

Amelia shook her head.

“I don’t know all of them.””

“But you know some.””

She hesitated.

“General Cole.””

Marcus nodded.

“I figured.””

“But he wasn’t alone.””

“Who else?””

Amelia looked at him.

“Your father.””

Marcus stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know how it sounds.””

“My father has been dead for twenty years.””

“I know.””

“Then how?””

Amelia lowered her voice.

“Because Daniel discovered he wasn’t.””

A chill moved through Marcus.

“You’re saying my father is alive?””

“I’m saying Daniel believed he was.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

Marcus stepped back.

The world felt like it was becoming a maze with no exit.

His father alive.

His best friend alive.

His daughter hidden.

His entire life built on missing pieces.

A phone vibrated.

Both of them looked down.

It was Marcus’s.

A message.

Unknown number.

*STOP ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.*

Another message appeared.

*YOU ALREADY LOST ONE PERSON YOU LOVED. DON’T LOSE ANOTHER.*

Marcus’s expression changed.

Amelia saw it.

“What is it?””

He showed her.

She went pale.

“They know we’re here.””

Marcus immediately reached for his radio.

“Lock down the building.””

Amelia grabbed his arm.

“No.””

“Amelia—”

“Look at the message.””

He stared.

“They’re threatening Ruby.””

“No.””

She pointed.

“They didn’t say Ruby.””

Marcus looked again.

The message said:

*DON’T LOSE ANOTHER.*

His stomach tightened.

The sender wasn’t threatening the child.

They were threatening someone else.

Someone close.

Someone they knew he cared about.

Before he could speak, an alarm sounded outside.

Not the emergency alarm.

A security alert.

The entire base shifted instantly.

Soldiers moved.

Doors closed.

People began receiving instructions.

Marcus opened the door.

A soldier approached quickly.

“Colonel Harris.””

“What happened?””

“Someone entered through the east gate.””

“Who?””

The soldier handed him a photo from a security camera.

Marcus looked at it.

Then stopped.

Because the person captured on camera was someone he had spent nineteen years believing was dead.

Daniel Brooks.

Alive.

Standing at Fort Harrison.

Marcus’s entire body went still.

“Where is he?””

The soldier hesitated.

“Sir…”

“Where?””

“He requested to speak only with you.””

Marcus grabbed the photo.

“Where?””

The soldier pointed toward the old training field.

“He’s waiting there.””

Amelia stepped beside him.

“Marcus, don’t.””

He looked at her.

“I need answers.””

“You don’t know what he’ll say.””

“He’s my friend.””

Her expression changed.

“Are you sure?””

The question bothered him.

Because he wasn’t.

Not anymore.

Every person he trusted had carried a secret.

Every person he loved had known something he didn’t.

Still, he walked.

Because some questions were too painful to ignore.

The old training field was nearly empty.

The afternoon sun stretched shadows across the ground.

Marcus walked alone.

Then he saw him.

Daniel Brooks stood near the fence.

Older.

Different.

But alive.

For a moment, Marcus couldn’t move.

Daniel looked at him.

And his expression broke.

“Marcus.””

The colonel stopped several feet away.

“You’re alive.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

A thousand emotions crossed Marcus’s face.

Anger.

Relief.

Betrayal.

Pain.

“You let me think you were dead.””

Daniel looked down.

“I know.””

“You let me bury you.””

“I know.””

“You let me lose nineteen years.””

Daniel’s eyes filled.

“I know.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Why?””

Daniel took a breath.

“Because I was trying to keep you alive.””

Marcus almost laughed.

“Not you too.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

“That’s what everyone says.””

The old friend looked toward the visitor center.

“Is she here?””

Marcus froze.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Ruby.””

The name came out softly.

Like he had been waiting years to say it.

Marcus’s anger returned.

“You knew.””

Daniel didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

“You knew I had a daughter.””

“Yes.””

“You held her.””

A tear moved down Daniel’s face.

“Yes.””

Marcus’s voice cracked.

“And you said nothing.””

Daniel looked away.

“I wanted to.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Marcus stared.

“What is that?””

“The reason Ruby was hidden.””

Marcus didn’t take it.

“Explain.””

Daniel looked toward the sky.

“Your father wasn’t the only person who discovered the truth.””

Marcus waited.

“Your mother knew too.””

“My mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“She wasn’t a victim.””

Marcus felt the ground shift.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“The Harris family secret didn’t begin with your father.””

He handed over the envelope.

“It began three generations ago.””

Marcus looked at the envelope.

Then at Daniel.

“What’s inside?””

Daniel’s face became serious.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Daniel looked toward the visitor center.

Toward Ruby.

Then back at Marcus.

“Proof that Ruby isn’t just the child everyone wanted hidden.””

A pause.

“She is the only person alive who can expose them.””

Marcus opened the envelope slowly.

Inside was a single document.

A family record.

A name circled in red.

His father’s.
