Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew

Evelyn stood at the top of the stairs with both hands raised.

She was an elegant Black woman in her seventies, wrapped in a long cream-colored coat. Snow clung to her silver hair. Her face was wet with tears.

Leon stared at her.

“Mom?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“I didn't know you were here.””

“You knew we'd find you.””

“No.””

“You knew.””

Her eyes moved past him.

To Samuel.

For thirty years, Samuel had imagined the woman who took his son.

He had imagined someone cruel.

Someone heartless.

Someone who could sleep peacefully after destroying a family.

But Evelyn didn't look cruel.

She looked terrified.

Samuel stepped forward.

“Why did you take my son?””

Evelyn flinched.

“I didn't.””

Samuel's voice hardened.

“Then why did you say you're sorry?””

“Because I should have told you the truth.””

Leon shook his head.

“What truth?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“The truth about your father.””

Leon swallowed.

“My father is dead.””

“I know.””

“He was involved.””

Evelyn nodded.

“He was.””

Samuel's fists tightened.

“Then tell me what happened.””

Evelyn looked toward Marcus.

For a moment, she seemed unable to speak.

Finally, she whispered,

“Your son was never sold.””

Samuel stared at her.

“Where was he taken?””

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

“He came to me.””

Marcus stepped backward.

“No.””

Evelyn's voice cracked.

“You were six years old.””

“I don't remember you.””

“You weren't supposed to.””

Samuel stared at her.

“What did you do to him?””

“I raised him.””

The words struck Marcus harder than a scream.

He shook his head.

“No.””

Evelyn took one step forward.

“Your mother believed you were safer with me.””

“She believed you were buying me.””

“I never paid for you.””

“Then why did Daniel take me?””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Because he knew I could protect you.””

Samuel's expression changed.

“Protect him from what?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“From the people who were hunting you.””

Samuel laughed bitterly.

“People?””

She nodded.

“Your brother had debts, Samuel. Dangerous debts. He borrowed money from men who wanted leverage over you.””

“Why me?””

“Because you refused to help them.””

“With what?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“Your trucking business.””

Samuel stared at her.

“What does that have to do with Marcus?””

“Everything.””

She looked toward the attic window.

“Your company was transporting high-value shipments. Daniel discovered that someone inside the company was stealing from them. When you tried to expose it, they decided the easiest way to silence you was to threaten your family.””

Marcus's voice was small.

“So my mother gave me to you?””

Evelyn nodded.

“She believed I could hide you.””

“And you changed my name.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel told everyone your father was dead.””

Samuel stepped forward.

“Did Renee know I was alive?””

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“At first, no.””

Samuel's voice cracked.

“At first?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Then she found out.””

Marcus stared at her.

“When?””

“Three days after you disappeared.””

Samuel closed his eyes.

“She knew.””

“She tried to find you.””

“Why didn't she tell me?””

“Because Daniel threatened her.””

“With what?””

“Your life.””

Samuel's face collapsed.

Evelyn continued.

“He told her that if she contacted you, he would arrange for you to be killed.””

Samuel whispered,

“I would have come anyway.””

“I know.””

“Then why didn't she tell me?””

Evelyn looked at Marcus.

“Because she believed she could keep you alive.””

Marcus wiped his face.

“She abandoned me.””

“No.””

“She lied to me.””

“Yes.””

“That's abandoning me.””

Evelyn lowered her head.

“You deserved the truth.””

Leon stepped forward.

“And what about me?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“What about you?””

“You raised me. You made me believe Marcus was my brother's friend. You made me believe my father was a good man.””

Her lips trembled.

“Your father loved you.””

“He lied to everyone.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he was afraid.””

Leon laughed through tears.

“He was afraid?””

Evelyn nodded.

“He thought the truth would destroy both families.””

Marcus looked at the metal box.

“Then what's this?””

Evelyn's expression changed.

“Where did you find it?””

“My mother's house.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“She told you.””

Marcus held up one of the letters.

“She left everything.””

Evelyn whispered,

“She wanted me to tell you.””

Samuel looked at her.

“Tell me what?””

Evelyn slowly walked toward the attic.

“There was one thing Renee never knew.””

“What?””

Evelyn stopped.

“She thought Daniel was the one who arranged your disappearance.””

Samuel frowned.

“He was.””

“He was only following orders.””

The room went silent.

Samuel stared at her.

“Whose orders?””

Evelyn looked toward Marcus.

Then she whispered,

“Your father's.””

Samuel's face went blank.

“My father died in 1988.””

“I know.””

“So how could he have ordered anything in 1996?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“He didn't.””

Samuel stared.

“Then who?””

Evelyn opened her mouth.

A loud crash came from downstairs.

Everyone turned.

Glass shattered.

Leon rushed toward the stairs.

Samuel grabbed his arm.

“Stay here.””

Another crash.

Marcus whispered,

“Someone's breaking in.””

Evelyn looked terrified.

“No.””

Samuel stared at her.

“You know who it is?””

She nodded.

May you like

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

“Daniel.””
