Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Second Contract

The photo on Ethan’s phone changed everything.

Not because it revealed a secret.

Because it proved someone else was watching.

Someone had been inside the reception hall.

Someone had been close enough to capture a picture of Michael standing among us.

And someone wanted us to know.

“Who sent that?”” I asked.

Ethan looked at the screen.

“The same number.””

Thomas stepped closer.

“Let me see.””

Ethan handed him the phone.

Thomas examined it carefully.

His expression became serious.

“This number…”

He stopped.

“What?””

Thomas looked at me.

“I haven’t seen it in twenty years.””

Claire moved closer.

“You know who it belongs to?””

Thomas didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation told me everything.

“Thomas.””

He looked at the floor.

“It belonged to Daniel.””

The room went silent.

Claire’s breathing stopped.

“My father?””

Thomas nodded.

“But that’s impossible.””

“Yes.””

“Then how is someone using it?””

Nobody had an answer.

Except maybe Michael.

I turned toward him.

He was standing near the entrance, watching all of us.

Not surprised.

Not confused.

Like he expected this.

“You know something.””

Michael smiled slightly.

“I know many things.””

“Then start talking.””

He looked at the guests.

“Not here.””

I laughed once.

After everything that had happened, after my son’s wedding had become a battlefield, he was worried about privacy.

“You lost the right to choose the location twenty years ago.””

His expression hardened.

“Still the same, Robert.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means you still think being angry makes you right.””

The words reminded me of my father.

That same arrogance.

That same confidence.

For a second, I saw two people in front of me.

Michael.

And the man who raised us.

I hated that.

Because I had spent my entire life trying not to become him.

“Everyone stays,” I said.

Michael looked around.

“You want strangers hearing your family’s history?””

I looked at the guests.

“These people already heard enough.””

Then I looked back at him.

“They deserve to know why.””

Michael studied me.

Then slowly nodded.

“Fine.””

He walked toward the center of the room.

The same place where Claire had stood earlier.

The same place where a bride was supposed to make promises.

Now, old wounds were being opened.

“My father and Daniel’s father built this vineyard together,” Michael began.

Claire nodded.

“We know that.””

“No.””

He looked at her.

“You know the version people wanted you to know.””

He turned toward me.

“Robert’s father was brilliant.””

I frowned.

“But he was also afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“Losing control.””

The words landed heavily.

Michael continued.

“When the vineyard started becoming valuable, your father realized he had created something bigger than himself.””

I felt my hands tighten.

“My father loved this land.””

“Yes.””

Michael nodded.

“He loved it so much he couldn’t stand the idea of sharing it.””

Claire looked shocked.

“You’re saying he betrayed my family?””

Michael didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

I looked at Thomas.

“Is this true?””

Thomas remained silent.

That was the worst answer.

Because Thomas had spent his entire career defending facts.

Silence meant there was something he couldn’t deny.

I turned back to Michael.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

He laughed quietly.

“You wouldn’t have believed me.””

“Try me.””

“I did.””

The words surprised me.

“When?””

Michael looked at me.

“The night Daniel disappeared.””

Everything stopped.

“What?””

He stepped closer.

“I came to your house.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“I was at the police station.””

“Exactly.””

My stomach tightened.

Michael’s voice became colder.

“You were answering questions about Daniel’s disappearance.””

I remembered that night.

The flashing lights.

The detectives.

The fear.

But I didn’t remember Michael being there.

“I left a message.””

I shook my head.

“I never got it.””

“Because someone erased it.””

The room went quiet.

Claire whispered:

“Who?””

Michael looked at me.

“Your father.””

My heart dropped.

“My father was dead.””

“Yes.””

Michael’s eyes narrowed.

“But his people were still working.””

The sentence chilled me.

“His people?””

Michael nodded.

“The company executives. The lawyers. The ones who protected his secrets.””

I looked at the contract again.

Suddenly, the hidden clause felt heavier.

“Why would my father do that?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because Daniel discovered the truth.””

“What truth?””

“That the vineyard wasn’t the only thing your father controlled.””

Claire stepped forward.

“What else?””

Michael looked at her.

“Your father.””

He pointed toward me.

“Robert inherited the business.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Michael’s voice softened.

“He inherited the blame.””

Nobody understood.

Not even me.

“What?””

Michael reached into his jacket.

This time he pulled out a small key.

Old.

Metal.

Worn.

“I found this after Daniel disappeared.””

Thomas immediately recognized it.

“Where did you get that?””

Michael looked at him.

“From the safe.””

Thomas’s face changed.

“What safe?””

“The one Daniel kept hidden.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

Michael looked at me.

“Under the original vineyard house.””

I stared.

“There is no house.””

“There was.””

A memory surfaced.

An old farmhouse.

The first building on the property.

The one my father demolished before the vineyard expanded.

I remembered Daniel talking about it once.

He said there were things inside that should never be forgotten.

But I thought it was just nostalgia.

“What’s inside?”” Ethan asked.

Michael looked at him.

“The second contract.””

Claire looked confused.

“Another one?””

“Yes.””

“Why would there be another?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because the first contract was designed for everyone to see.””

He held up the key.

“The second one was designed for whoever needed the truth.””

I stepped closer.

“Give me the key.””

Michael didn’t move.

“No.””

My anger returned.

“You came here to reveal secrets and now you refuse?””

“I came here because Daniel asked me to.””

The room went still.

“What?””

Michael looked at the phone.

“The message.””

He nodded toward Ethan.

“The one from Daniel’s number.””

Ethan looked confused.

“You received one too?””

Michael nodded.

I stared.

“You knew Daniel contacted someone?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Michael looked at me.

“Me.””

The answer shocked everyone.

Claire whispered:

“Why?””

Michael looked at her.

“Because Daniel knew Claire would eventually find the truth.””

He looked at me.

“And he knew Robert would need someone who hated him enough to tell him.””

I almost laughed.

“You hated me.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“Why?””

Michael looked down.

“Because I believed you betrayed him.””

A pause.

“And because I was wrong.””

The room became quiet.

For the first time that night, Michael looked less like an enemy.

More like someone carrying his own regret.

“I spent twenty years blaming you.””

He looked at me.

“Just like Claire did.””

Claire lowered her eyes.

Michael continued.

“But Daniel knew the truth.””

“What truth?””

Michael looked at the key.

“The person who changed the contract was not your father.””

I froze.

Everyone froze.

“But you said—”

“I said what I believed.””

Michael looked at the documents.

“But Daniel found proof that someone else manipulated everything.””

Claire stepped closer.

“Who?””

Michael looked toward the entrance.

Toward the empty hallway.

Then back at us.

“He wasn’t protecting the vineyard from Robert.””

A pause.

“He was protecting Robert from the person who destroyed his father.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

Michael’s eyes moved to the envelope Claire had brought.

The old letter.

The one from her grandmother.

“Open the final page.””

Claire looked confused.

“I already did.””

“No.””

Michael shook his head.

“You read the front.””

He looked at me.

“But you never read the back.””

Claire grabbed the letter.

Her hands trembled.

She turned it over.

There was writing.

Hidden.

A message folded into the paper.

Her face changed as she read.

“What does it say?”” Ethan asked.

Claire looked up.

All the anger was gone.

All the certainty.

Only shock remained.

“My grandmother wrote…”

She swallowed.

“She wrote that Daniel didn’t disappear because of the vineyard.””

I stepped closer.

“What then?””

Claire looked at me.

“She wrote that Daniel disappeared because he discovered who was trying to kill him.””

Nobody moved.

The air felt impossible to breathe.

Michael quietly said:

“And now that person knows we found the contracts.””

A sound came from outside.

A car door closing.

Everyone turned toward the vineyard entrance.

A figure stood beyond the glass doors.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then the lights near the parking area flickered.

The person disappeared.

Ethan looked at me.

“Dad…”

I looked at the darkness outside.

Because suddenly I understood.

The wedding had never been interrupted by a family secret.

It had been interrupted by someone who was terrified of the truth coming out.

May you like

And whoever had been hiding for twenty years…

Had just realized we were looking for them.
