Chapter 7: The Message That Changed Everything
Vanessa's phone vibrated again.
She stared at the screen as though the words might disappear if she refused to acknowledge them.
*WE KNOW ABOUT THE HOUSE. YOU HAVE UNTIL MONDAY.*
I read the message twice.
Then I looked at her.
“Who sent that?””
“I don't know.””
“Vanessa.””
“I said I don't know!””
Her voice cracked across the ballroom. Several guests turned toward us, and the wedding planner hurried to move a cluster of curious relatives away from the head table.
Attorney Harris extended his hand.
“May I see the message?””
Vanessa hesitated before handing him the phone.
He examined the screen without touching anything else.
“Has this number contacted you before?””
She shook her head.
“Have you received threats from anyone connected to your business?””
“No.””
Daniel shifted his weight beside the table.
“Vanessa, you need to tell them what's happening.””
She glared at him.
“You've done enough.””
“I'm trying to help you.””
“Then leave.””
Daniel didn't move.
“Who is the message referring to? The house? The financing proposal? Or the money you said you needed by Monday?””
Vanessa snatched her phone back.
“Stop interrogating me!””
My father stepped between Daniel and Vanessa, not aggressively, but firmly enough to prevent another confrontation.
“Everyone needs to calm down,” Walter said.
“Nobody is going to solve anything by shouting.””
I looked at my father.
“How are you this calm?””
He met my eyes.
“Because panic doesn't make a problem smaller, son. It just makes it harder to see.””
I took a slow breath.
Then I turned back to Vanessa.
“Tell me the truth. Are you in danger?””
She looked down at her phone.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered, “I borrowed money.””
The room seemed to go silent all over again.
“From whom?”” I asked.
“A private investor.””
“Daniel?””
“No. Someone else.””
Daniel's expression tightened.
“Vanessa, you told me the company had private funding.””
“It did.””
“Then why did you need a loan from someone else?””
“Because the first investor withdrew.””
She began twisting her engagement ring around her finger.
“The company was already committed to several expenses. I had deposits to pay, contractors waiting, and a property deal that was supposed to close. I thought I could cover the shortfall temporarily.””
“With what?”” I asked.
She didn't look at me.
“My personal savings.””
“And when those ran out?””
She swallowed.
“I borrowed more.””
Attorney Harris placed the phone on the table.
“Was there a written agreement?””
“Yes.””
“Do you have a copy?””
Vanessa nodded reluctantly.
“It's on my email.””
“Then preserve it. Don't delete messages, don't alter documents, and don't agree to any new terms under pressure. You should speak with an independent attorney about the agreement and the threat.””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“I'm not a criminal.””
“I'm not accusing you of being one,” Harris replied.
“I'm telling you to protect yourself and understand your obligations.””
I pulled out a chair.
“Sit down, Vanessa.””
She stared at me.
“Why?””
“Because your hands are shaking, and I want to understand what's happening.””
She sat.
For the first time since the ceremony had been interrupted, she looked less like the confident woman who had organized every detail of the wedding and more like someone who had been carrying a secret for far too long.
“I borrowed eighty thousand dollars,” she said.
My stomach tightened.
“Eighty thousand?””
She nodded.
“Initially, it was supposed to be a short-term loan. Six months, maybe less. The investor said he could move quickly, and I needed money before I lost the property opportunity.””
“What property opportunity?””
“A commercial building I wanted to convert into a luxury rental business.””
“And you thought you'd repay the loan with business profits?””
“Yes.””
“Did you?””
She shook her head.
“The deal fell through. Then I used part of the money to keep the company running.””
Daniel pulled out a chair across from her.
“Why didn't you tell me the loan existed?””
“Because I didn't want you to pull out of the financing process.””
“Vanessa, I was helping you prepare a proposal. I wasn't promising you money.””
“I know that now.””
“You knew it then.””
She lowered her head.
Daniel looked toward me.
“Marcus, I had no idea she was under this kind of pressure. I thought the company was struggling with cash flow, not facing a deadline connected to a private loan.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“How does the house fit into this?””
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“The investor wanted security. I told him I was getting married and that my husband's family had substantial resources. I said we were discussing a property arrangement.””
“Did you tell him you already owned the house?””
She hesitated.
“He assumed I would have access to it.””
“Did you correct him?””
“No.””
I leaned back.
The answer hurt more than I expected.
She hadn't merely failed to tell me about her debt. She had allowed another person to believe that a valuable asset might be available to support it.
And the asset was a house my parents had bought for me without asking for anything in return.
“Did you give him my name?”” I asked.
“Yes.””
“Did you give him the address?””
She nodded.
“Did you tell him the transfer had been completed?””
“No. Not then.””
“Then why does he know about the house today?””
“I don't know.””
Attorney Harris spoke carefully.
“The timing may be connected to information supplied during the financing discussions. We shouldn't assume how the sender obtained it until the records are reviewed.””
My mother moved closer to Vanessa.
“Why didn't you ask us for help?””
Vanessa looked up, startled.
Loretta's expression was sad rather than angry.
“You could have told us you were struggling. We might not have been able to solve everything, but we would have listened.””
Vanessa let out a bitter laugh.
“You wouldn't have understood.””
“Perhaps not,” my mother replied.
“But you didn't give us the chance.””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“I didn't want anyone to know I'd failed.””
For a moment, I felt compassion for her.
I knew what it was like to be afraid of disappointing people. I knew how shame could make a small problem grow into something that seemed impossible to admit.
But understanding her fear didn't erase what she had done.
“You could have trusted me,” I said.
“I was afraid you'd see me differently.””
“I do see you differently.””
She flinched.
I hated that my words hurt her.
I hated even more that they were true.
Her phone vibrated again.
This time, the message was longer.
She opened it with trembling fingers and read silently.
Then she pushed the phone across the table.
The sender had written:
*THE PROPERTY IS NOT YOURS. YOUR REPRESENTATIONS HAVE BEEN REVIEWED. IF THE PAYMENT IS NOT RECEIVED BY MONDAY, WE WILL PURSUE EVERY AVAILABLE LEGAL REMEDY.*
Daniel leaned forward.
“That's not the same as threatening to hurt you. It sounds like a demand connected to the debt, but the agreement needs to be reviewed before anyone can say what rights the sender actually has.””
Harris nodded.
“Save the message. Don't respond impulsively. We can help you identify the appropriate next steps, but you need independent advice concerning your own obligations.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Marcus, please.””
I knew what she was going to ask before she spoke.
“I need the house.””
I stared at her.
“No.””
Her lips parted.
“You don't even know what I was going to say.””
“You just told me you need the house.””
“I need you to help me.””
“By giving you access to property I didn't know existed until today?””
“By standing beside the woman you're supposed to marry!””
The desperation in her voice made several guests look away.
I stood slowly.
“I was standing beside you when you threw my mother's gift on the floor. I was standing beside you when you told me you hadn't told me about your debt because you expected me to say no. I'm still standing here.””
She stared at me, breathing unevenly.
“But I'm not going to promise you my house just because you're afraid.””
Her shoulders collapsed.
For a moment, I thought she might finally accept what I was saying.
Instead, she looked at my father.
“Walter, you have money. You could help me clear this debt. You wouldn't even notice eighty thousand dollars.””
My father didn't blink.
“That money belongs to my family. We worked for it. And it isn't yours to spend.””
“But Marcus is your son!””
“Exactly,” Walter said.
“Which is why I want him to enter marriage with someone who respects his right to say no.””
Vanessa looked back at me.
Then she whispered something that made even Daniel's expression change.
“If you don't help me, they'll come after more than the money.””
I stepped closer.
“Who will?””
She opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, Attorney Harris noticed a name at the bottom of the original financing proposal.
He read it once.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“Is this the person who lent you the eighty thousand dollars?””
Vanessa nodded.
Harris turned the page toward me.
A company name appeared beside the signature.
*PRICE CAPITAL HOLDINGS.*
Daniel went rigid.
“That isn't my company,” he said.
“But I know the name.””
He looked at Vanessa with sudden alarm.
“Vanessa, who exactly did you borrow from?””
May you like
She covered her face with both hands.
And when she finally answered, the name she spoke changed the entire meaning of the threat.
