Chapter 4: The Face on the Second Recording
Darius was three steps from the ballroom doors when the bride's father called his name.
"Mr. Carter, I wouldn't leave just yet.""
Darius stopped.
For a moment, he didn't turn around. His shoulders rose beneath his black tuxedo, and his right hand tightened around his phone. Then he faced the room with the same polished expression he had worn when he arrived that morning.
"I'm not a prisoner," he said.
"I have no obligation to stand here while everybody invents stories about me.""
Grandma Evelyn stepped between him and the exit.
"Nobody is inventing anything. The cameras are showing us what happened.""
"They're showing fragments!""
"Then stay and explain them.""
Darius looked at me, expecting me to intervene. For most of our lives, I had been the sister who smoothed things over. If he argued with a relative, I made excuses.
If he insulted someone, I reminded them that he had been under pressure. When he disappointed our grandmother, I begged her to give him another chance.
He expected that woman to appear again.
She didn't.
I stood with Maya tucked against my side, one hand resting protectively on her shoulder.
"Stay, Darius," I said.
"For once, let the truth finish speaking.""
His eyes narrowed.
"You have no idea what you're asking for.""
"Then help me understand.""
He said nothing.
The venue manager placed the second tablet on the table beside Grandma Evelyn. The screen showed a narrow corridor outside the bridal preparation suite, recorded earlier that afternoon. The lighting was bright and clear. A timestamp appeared in the upper corner.
The bride moved closer to her father.
"That's the corridor where I left my mother's documents," she said.
"The envelope was inside my dressing room.""
Grandma Evelyn nodded toward the manager.
"Play it.""
The recording began.
At first, the corridor was empty. A member of the catering staff passed carrying a tray. A bridesmaid entered the preparation suite, then emerged a few minutes later with a garment bag.
Then Rochelle appeared.
She checked both ends of the corridor before opening her handbag.
I glanced at my aunt.
She was staring at the screen as though she wished she could disappear into the carpet.
Rochelle walked to the dressing-room door and entered. Less than a minute later, she came out holding a cream-colored envelope.
The bride covered her mouth.
"That's it.""
Rochelle began shaking her head.
"Please, let me explain.""
The recording continued.
Rochelle looked down the corridor again. Then she approached the service elevator.
Darius stepped out.
He was wearing the same tuxedo he wore now.
He took the envelope from Rochelle and opened it. He removed several sheets, studied them, and slipped them into his inside pocket.
Then he handed Rochelle something small.
She closed her fist around it.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
I heard the soft clink of a spoon against a glass somewhere near the bar. It sounded absurdly loud.
The bride turned to Rochelle.
"You went into my dressing room and took my mother's documents?""
Rochelle wiped her cheeks.
"I didn't intend for any of this to happen.""
"That isn't an answer," the bride said.
"Did you take them?""
Rochelle looked at Darius.
He shook his head almost imperceptibly.
It was such a small movement that I might have missed it if I hadn't been watching him.
My aunt saw it too.
And something inside her finally broke.
"Yes," Rochelle whispered.
"I took the envelope.""
The bride's father closed his eyes briefly.
"Why?""
Rochelle pressed both hands against her stomach.
"Darius told me the documents contained information that could hurt the family. He said he needed to review them before they became public.""
"Public?"" I repeated.
"They're wedding contribution records. What could possibly be in them?""
Darius stepped forward.
"That's enough. Rochelle, don't say another word.""
Grandma Evelyn turned sharply.
"You don't give orders here.""
"I'm trying to protect this family!""
"From what?""
His mouth tightened.
Rochelle began crying harder.
"He said the records would expose money that had gone missing from the family trust.""
The words landed like a physical blow.
Grandma Evelyn went completely still.
I looked at her.
"What family trust?""
She didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she watched Darius.
He had gone pale beneath the bright ballroom lights.
Rochelle continued, her voice trembling.
"He told me the records would make him look responsible. He said if we could remove the original documents and replace them with the copies he prepared, nobody would know the difference.""
The bride's father stared at Darius.
"You planned to alter the records?""
"No," Darius snapped.
"She has misunderstood everything.""
Rochelle flinched.
"You told me exactly what to do!""
"I told you to retrieve paperwork. I never told you to steal anything.""
"You gave me the envelope!""
"And you chose to take it!""
Their argument filled the ballroom, each accusation exposing another piece of a story neither wanted to tell.
I looked down at Maya.
She was watching the adults with wide, frightened eyes.
I knelt beside her.
"Baby, would you like to sit somewhere quiet with the bride?""
She shook her head.
"I want to stay with you.""
"Then that's what we'll do.""
I held her hand and stood again.
"Darius, what does any of this have to do with my daughter?""
He looked away.
I stepped closer.
"You put your phone in her jacket. You accused her of stealing it. You knew there was a camera recording you. Why would you do something so reckless?""
He gave a humorless laugh.
"You think you understand what happened because you watched a few videos?""
"I understand that my daughter was innocent.""
For the first time, he looked directly at Maya.
She immediately hid behind my dress.
His expression flickered, but it wasn't remorse. It looked more like frustration that the child he had chosen to blame was still standing there, alive to the truth.
Grandma Evelyn noticed.
"Don't look at her like that," she warned.
Darius turned toward our grandmother.
"You want the truth? Fine. The family trust isn't what you think it is.""
Grandma Evelyn's face hardened.
"What have you done with the money?""
He opened his mouth.
Then the venue manager's tablet chimed.
A new notification appeared on the screen.
The manager read it, then looked at Grandma Evelyn with visible concern.
"Ma'am, the security supervisor has found another recording. It's from the ballroom itself, approximately twenty minutes before the first incident.""
He tapped the screen.
A new image appeared.
It showed Darius standing near the table where Maya had later been seated.
But he wasn't alone.
Beside him stood a man I had never seen before, holding a black leather folder.
And when the stranger turned toward the camera, Darius's face changed completely.
"Turn that off," he whispered.
Grandma Evelyn looked at him.
"Who is that man?""
Darius didn't answer.
The stranger on the screen opened his folder and handed Darius a document.
At the bottom of the page was a signature.
My grandmother leaned forward to read it.
May you like
Then she whispered a name that made Rochelle collapse into a chair.
Our mother's name.
