Chapter 6: The Man Behind The Disappearance

For a moment, nobody in the wedding hall remembered how to breathe.

The flowers.

The music.

The expensive decorations.

The carefully planned ceremony.

None of it mattered anymore.

Because my father, the man I buried in my heart twenty years ago, might still be alive.

And the man standing in front of me knew more than he ever admitted.

“Where is he?””

My voice came out steady.

Almost too steady.

Derrick stared at me.

“I don’t know.””

I looked at him.

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I’m not.””

“You just said someone found him.””

He ran a hand through his hair.

“I said someone found him. I didn’t say I knew where he was.””

The anger inside me burned hotter.

“How convenient.””

“Naomi—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to say my name like you still have the right to protect me.””

The words hit him.

Good.

Because for years, I carried the weight of his silence.

Now he could carry some of mine.

Victor stepped beside me.

Not in front.

Never in front.

He knew I needed to face this myself.

Harold looked toward the wedding guests.

“Everyone needs to leave.””

A wave of confusion moved through the room.

Guests began whispering.

Some stood immediately.

Others stayed, desperate to understand the drama unfolding before them.

Harold’s voice became firm.

“This is no longer a wedding.””

Nobody argued.

Within minutes, the beautiful ballroom transformed.

The celebration disappeared.

The flowers remained.

The candles remained.

The perfect setting remained.

But the happiness was gone.

Only the truth stayed.

When the last guests left, only a few people remained.

Me.

Victor.

Derrick.

Evelyn.

Harold.

And the wedding coordinator, who stood quietly near the entrance, unsure whether she should leave.

Harold turned to Derrick.

“Call the number.””

Derrick looked at him.

“What?””

“The person who sent the message.””

Derrick hesitated.

“Why?””

“Because if someone is watching this wedding, we need to know why.””

Derrick looked at me.

Then at the phone.

Finally, he pressed call.

The speaker filled the room with ringing.

One ring.

Two rings.

Three.

Then someone answered.

Nobody spoke.

Only silence.

Derrick swallowed.

“Who is this?””

A man’s voice responded.

Older.

Calm.

“You took longer than I expected.””

Derrick’s face changed.

“Who are you?””

The man ignored the question.

“Is Naomi there?””

My heart tightened.

I stepped closer.

“I’m here.””

Silence.

Then:

“Naomi Carter.””

Hearing my full name from a stranger sent a chill through me.

“Yes.””

The man exhaled.

“I was hoping I would never have to speak to you.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then he said:

“Because if I’m talking to you, it means Patricia failed.””

Derrick went completely still.

My eyes moved toward him.

Patricia.

His mother.

The woman in the photograph.

The woman connected to my father.

“Who are you?”” I asked.

The man answered.

“My name is Raymond Cole.””

Harold’s face changed.

He knew that name.

“Raymond…”

The man continued.

“Marcus asked me to watch from a distance.””

My heart raced.

“You knew my father?””

“Yes.””

“Where is he?””

Silence.

Too long.

“Where is my father?””

The man sighed.

“Naomi, there are things you need to understand first.””

“No.””

My voice sharpened.

“I spent twenty years thinking my father abandoned me.””

I looked at Derrick.

“Then I found out people lied to me.””

I looked back at the phone.

“I don’t need another person protecting me from the truth.””

The room became silent.

Finally, Raymond spoke.

“Your father loved you.””

My eyes closed.

Those words hurt more than I expected.

Because they were the words I had wanted my entire life.

“He never stopped.””

A tear slipped down my cheek.

I wiped it away quickly.

I didn’t want anyone seeing me break.

Not today.

Not here.

Not after everything.

“Then why didn’t he come home?””

Raymond was quiet.

Then:

“Because someone tried to kill him.””

The room froze.

Derrick stepped back.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Harold lowered his eyes.

Victor’s hand tightened slightly.

“Who?”” I asked.

Raymond answered.

“Patricia Bennett.””

The name echoed through the room.

Derrick looked sick.

“No.””

Raymond continued.

“She discovered Marcus had evidence against her.””

“Evidence of what?””

“Fraud. Theft. Manipulation.””

Harold nodded slowly.

“I knew there were financial problems.””

Raymond continued.

“But Marcus wasn’t interested in revenge.””

My throat tightened.

“That sounds like him.””

A small sadness entered Raymond’s voice.

“He only cared about Naomi.””

I looked away.

Because suddenly I remembered everything.

My father teaching me how to ride a bike.

My father making pancakes too sweet because he always added extra sugar.

My father telling me:

“Never let someone else decide your worth.””

I spent years thinking he abandoned me.

But he was fighting for me.

Somewhere.

Alone.

“Where is he now?”” I asked.

Raymond didn’t answer.

And that scared me.

“Raymond.””

“He’s close.””

My heart stopped.

“Close?””

“Yes.””

“How close?””

Another pause.

“Close enough that he knows you’re married.””

I looked at Victor.

Then back at the phone.

“What?””

Raymond continued.

“Marcus kept track of your life.””

My voice cracked.

“Then why didn’t he come to me?””

“Because he believed Patricia was still watching you.””

I looked at Derrick.

His face was pale.

“Your ex-husband was not the only person involved.””

That sentence changed the room.

Derrick looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Raymond answered:

“Someone inside your company helped Patricia.””

Derrick’s eyes widened.

“My company?””

“Yes.””

Harold stepped forward.

“Who?””

Raymond was silent.

Then:

“Someone close to Derrick.””

Everyone looked at him.

Derrick shook his head.

“No.””

Raymond continued.

“The person who leaked Marcus’s location.””

Derrick’s face changed.

“Stop.””

“The person who delayed the trust documents.””

“Stop.””

“The person who made sure Naomi believed her father abandoned her.””

Derrick looked like he couldn’t breathe.

“Who?””

The question came from me.

Not angry.

Not emotional.

Just tired.

I was tired of secrets.

Tired of people deciding what I could handle.

Raymond finally answered.

“It wasn’t Patricia alone.””

A pause.

“It was someone who knew Naomi personally.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

The phone went silent.

Then Raymond said:

“Someone who attended your first wedding.””

My blood ran cold.

Derrick looked around the room.

Evelyn looked confused.

Harold looked shocked.

Victor became completely still.

Because everyone understood what that meant.

Someone had been there.

Someone had watched Derrick promise me forever.

Someone had watched me become broken.

Someone had watched my life fall apart.

And they had kept the truth hidden.

I looked at Derrick.

“Who was at our wedding?””

He didn’t answer.

Because suddenly, he knew.

His face changed from confusion…

to recognition.

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Derrick.””

He looked at me.

His voice was barely audible.

“It can’t be.””

“Who?””

He closed his eyes.

And whispered the name.

A name that made the entire room go silent.

“My father.””

I stared at him.

“Your father?””

Derrick nodded slowly.

“The person who helped my mother…”

He looked at the phone.

“…was my father.””

The call suddenly ended.

The line went dead.

And before anyone could speak, another notification appeared on Derrick’s phone.

A new message.

One sentence.

*Ask your ex-wife why Marcus trusted her more than his own family.*

I looked at the screen.

Then at Derrick.

Because now there was another mystery.

My father didn’t just leave me a secret.

He left me a warning.

May you like

And somehow…

that warning was about me.
