Chapter 13: The Brother Nobody Was Supposed to Find
For several seconds, nobody in the conference room moved.
The young man stood beside Claire with the confidence of someone who had spent his entire life knowing exactly where he belonged.
Daniel Hayes.
My oldest brother.
I looked at him, then at the photograph Claire had placed on the table.
He looked nothing like me.
His hair was darker, his face narrower, and his eyes were almost black. But when he smiled, I noticed something familiar.
The same slight crease appeared beside his left cheek.
My father's smile.
“Is this some kind of joke?”” I asked.
Claire shook her head.
“I'm afraid not.””
I turned toward my mother.
She was staring at Daniel as though she had seen a ghost.
“Eleanor?”” I asked.
She slowly lowered herself into a chair.
“I knew about him.””
My chest tightened.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“Your father told me before you were born.””
I stared at her.
“And you never thought to mention that I had another brother?””
“Your father made me promise.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Another promise. Another secret. Another child nobody wanted to talk about.””
Daniel pulled out a chair.
“I'm not here to discuss family feelings.””
He placed the sealed envelope in front of Daniel Foster, my attorney.
“I'm here to establish ownership.””
My attorney opened the envelope.
Inside were three documents.
The first was a birth certificate.
The second was a notarized acknowledgment of paternity signed by Harold Hayes.
The third was a trust agreement dated 1985.
Daniel Foster read through the pages.
His expression gradually changed.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
“Your father established an irrevocable family trust before you were born.””
Claire smiled.
“Exactly.””
Daniel continued.
“The trust identifies Daniel Hayes as the primary beneficiary and grants him controlling rights over certain company assets.””
I leaned forward.
“Certain assets?””
“According to this document, the original Hayes Industrial Group shares were placed into the trust.””
I turned toward Claire.
“So you've been telling everyone that Adrian and Ethan own the company, but the original shares belong to Daniel?””
She smiled.
“Now you're beginning to understand.””
I looked at my newly discovered brother.
“Why didn't you come forward seventeen years ago?””
Daniel adjusted his cuffs.
“Because I didn't need to.””
“That's not an answer.””
“My father made financial arrangements for me. I received an education, investments, and a private residence. I had no reason to interfere with the company.””
“Then why are you here now?””
His expression hardened.
“Because Claire contacted me.””
I looked at her.
“Of course.””
She ignored me.
“Daniel has the legal authority to resolve the ownership dispute. If he signs the final transfer, the company becomes his.””
“And what do you get?””
Claire smiled.
“Protection for my children.””
I glanced at Daniel.
“Adrian and Ethan?””
He nodded.
“They have been promised positions within the new management structure.””
I almost laughed.
“Positions? After everything they've done?””
Daniel leaned forward.
“I'm not responsible for their actions.””
“Neither am I. Yet here we are.””
My attorney closed the folder.
“Mr. Hayes, we need to verify the validity of these documents before anyone signs anything.””
Claire's smile faded.
“You've had enough time.””
“Not nearly enough,” Daniel Foster replied.
Daniel Hayes stood.
“I don't intend to wait.””
He reached into his jacket and removed a fountain pen.
Then he signed the first document.
Patricia gasped.
“Stop!””
He looked at her.
“What?””
“Your father left instructions that this trust could not be activated without a second witness.””
Daniel frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Patricia opened her folder.
She pulled out a document I had never seen before.
“Harold gave me this shortly before he died.””
Daniel Hayes took it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he looked at Claire.
“Is this authentic?””
Claire's jaw tightened.
“What does it say?””
Patricia answered.
“The trust becomes void if the primary beneficiary knowingly participates in an attempt to fraudulently obtain company assets.””
Daniel looked at her.
“And you think I did that?””
Patricia nodded toward the documents.
“Your signature appears on the Northbridge acquisition agreement.””
Daniel's expression changed.
“That was a different transaction.””
“It's the same company.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Patricia, enough.””
But Patricia wasn't finished.
She opened another folder.
“I also have the original correspondence between Harold and Daniel from 2008.””
She placed a letter on the table.
Daniel Hayes picked it up.
His face slowly lost color.
“What is this?””
I looked at the letter.
It was written by my father.
Daniel,
I know Claire has been approaching you about the company. Do not sign anything she gives you.
She has been using your inheritance as leverage against your brothers. If you cooperate with her, you will lose the protection of the trust.
I want you to understand something. You are my son, and I love you. But I will not allow you to become another Richard.
Daniel dropped the letter.
Claire grabbed his arm.
“Don't listen to that.””
He pulled away.
“You told me Father wanted me to take everything.””
“He did!””
“He specifically warned me about you.””
Claire's expression turned vicious.
“He was an old, frightened man.””
Daniel stepped backward.
For the first time, I saw uncertainty in his eyes.
Then my phone rang.
It was Daniel Foster's investigator.
I answered.
“Marcus?””
“Yes.””
“We found Ethan.””
“Where?””
“At a private medical facility outside Chicago.””
My stomach tightened.
“Is he all right?””
“He's alive, but there's a problem. His medical records show that someone authorized a procedure for tomorrow morning.””
“What procedure?””
The investigator hesitated.
“A permanent transfer of guardianship. Once it's approved, Claire will regain legal control over his trust.””
I looked at Claire.
She was watching me.
Then she smiled.
“Family matters are complicated, Marcus.””
I ended the call.
“Daniel,” I said, turning toward my new brother.
“If you really care about this family, help us stop her.””
He looked at Claire.
Then at the documents.
Finally, he picked up the fountain pen and crossed out his signature.
Claire's face twisted.
“You ungrateful little fool!””
Daniel stared at her.
“You told me I was my father's only legitimate heir.””
He turned toward me.
“I'm sorry, Marcus.””
I nodded.
“Save it for later.””
Claire reached for her handbag.
But before she could leave, Daniel Foster placed a document in front of her.
“Mrs. Bennett, you're not going anywhere.””
She frowned.
“What?””
He pointed toward the signature at the bottom of the document.
“Your authorization was used to transfer funds from a company account into a private medical facility. We have evidence connecting you to the attempted guardianship transfer.””
Claire stared at the paper.
Then she laughed.
“You think that proves anything?””
Daniel's phone rang.
He answered, listened, and then slowly looked at me.
“Marcus, we've got confirmation.””
“What?””
“The facility has agreed to release Ethan's records.””
“And?””
He swallowed.
“Ethan never had the neurological condition Claire claimed he had.””
The room went silent.
Daniel continued.
“The original diagnosis was fabricated seventeen years ago.””
I turned toward Claire.
She was no longer smiling.
Daniel Foster looked at me.
“Marcus, your brother wasn't medically incapable.””
May you like
He paused.
“He was being held against his will.””
