Chapter 5: My Wife's Signature on a Dead Woman's Contract
I took the document from Vanessa.
For a moment, I couldn't see anything except Lorraine's signature.
The familiar slant of the letters.
The small curve beneath the C.
The way she always crossed the final r in Carter.
I had watched her write that signature thousands of times.
But this document was dated three months after her funeral.
“Who prepared this?”” I asked.
Vanessa glanced at Marcus.
“He did.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“She's lying.””
Vanessa gave a humorless laugh.
“You told me you had permission from the trustees.””
“I did.””
“You told me the trust had approved the sale.””
“It had.””
“Then why did you ask me to backdate the agreement?””
Marcus's face tightened.
“Shut your mouth.””
I looked at my son.
“Did you forge your mother's signature?””
He rubbed his jaw.
“Dad, you don't understand the transaction.””
“Then help me understand.””
“Blackwood Lane wasn't profitable. We needed to move the asset into a development company.””
“Without my approval?””
“You weren't available.””
“I was in rehabilitation, not buried.””
Daniel's voice suddenly came from behind us.
“What's going on?””
I turned.
My eldest son had arrived in a black Mercedes.
He stepped out wearing a gray suit and carrying a leather briefcase.
His eyes moved from me to Vanessa.
Then to the document in my hand.
For one brief moment, he looked frightened.
Then the familiar arrogance returned.
“Dad, this is a private business matter.””
“Apparently, everything involving my money is private.””
Daniel approached.
“Marcus, I told you to handle this.””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“That's exactly the problem. You told him to handle everything, but you never told him the trust hadn't approved the sale.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You were paid to facilitate the transaction.””
“I was paid to manage a legitimate development project. I wasn't paid to commit fraud.””
I turned toward Renee.
“Call the trustees. I want this transaction frozen.””
She immediately stepped away to make the call.
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You can't freeze anything. The agreement is already registered.””
“Then we'll challenge it.””
“You'll destroy the company.””
I looked at him.
“You've been doing that quite efficiently without my help.””
Marcus stepped between us.
“Dad, listen. We had a financial problem. The development was supposed to solve it.””
“What financial problem?””
Daniel opened his briefcase.
He pulled out a set of documents and threw them onto the hood of his car.
“Carter Holdings was facing a liquidity crisis. We had loans coming due, payroll obligations, and creditors threatening legal action.””
I studied the papers.
The numbers were serious.
But they were not catastrophic.
I had enough reserves to cover the entire amount.
“Why didn't you come to me?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because you would have said no.””
“That's not a financial reason.””
“You wouldn't understand.””
“Try me.””
He exhaled sharply.
“We needed six million to secure the redevelopment rights. The project would have generated twenty million in profit.””
“Then why use your mother's protected account?””
Marcus answered.
“Because the money was available.””
I stared at him.
“You stole from your mother's trust because it was convenient?””
“That's not what happened.””
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
Both brothers turned toward her.
“Go ahead,” Daniel said.
“Say whatever you want.””
Vanessa opened her handbag again.
This time, she removed a small flash drive.
“I kept copies of everything.””
Marcus went pale.
“Vanessa, don't.””
She ignored him.
“Mr. Carter, I have the original emails, payment instructions, and recorded calls. Daniel arranged the six-million-dollar transfer.
Marcus created the shell companies. And Brielle handled the paperwork that made the transfers look like approved family distributions.””
I felt the air leave my lungs.
Brielle.
My daughter.
The little girl who used to sit beside Lorraine in the garden, picking flowers and asking why the world was so unfair to people who were poor.
“She signed the documents?”” I asked.
Vanessa nodded.
“She was listed as the family representative.””
Daniel shook his head.
“She didn't know what she was signing.””
“That's convenient,” Vanessa replied.
“Because I have an email from her saying she knew the money was being moved.””
Renee returned.
“The trustees have issued an emergency suspension of all transactions involving the trust's assets. No sale can proceed until the matter is reviewed.””
Marcus swore under his breath.
Daniel turned toward me.
“Dad, this is getting out of hand.””
I looked at the two men.
“Six million dollars disappeared. A property was transferred using your mother's forged signature. And now you're telling me things are getting out of hand?””
Daniel stepped closer.
“I'm trying to protect this family.””
I shook my head.
“No. You're trying to protect yourself.””
He lowered his voice.
“You have no idea what you're doing.””
I studied his face.
“Then why are you so afraid?””
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
Then Vanessa placed the flash drive in Renee's hand.
“There's one more recording,” she said.
Daniel turned sharply.
“What recording?””
“The one from the night Lorraine was admitted to the hospital.””
My heart began pounding.
“What does it contain?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Your wife discovered the withdrawal. She confronted Daniel. Marcus was there too.””
I felt my throat tighten.
“Was Brielle there?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She was.””
I reached for the edge of the car.
Lorraine had confronted our children while she was sick.
And none of them had told me.
Renee looked at the flash drive.
“Arthur, we should listen to this somewhere private.””
“No,” I said.
“Play it.””
She hesitated.
Then she opened the recording on her tablet.
A woman's voice filled the air.
Lorraine's voice.
Weak, but unmistakable.
“Daniel, I know about the six million dollars.””
A man's voice answered.
“Mom, you don't understand.””
“I understand perfectly.””
Then another voice spoke.
Marcus.
“Daniel, we need to leave. Dad could come back at any moment.””
Lorraine's breathing became uneven.
“Your father must never find out what you've done.””
Then Daniel said something that made my knees weaken.
“He won't. Because by the time he finds out, he'll be too confused to do anything about it.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
I stared at my sons.
Daniel looked down.
Marcus had turned away.
And then Renee replayed the final three seconds.
A fourth voice appeared.
A woman's voice.
Brielle.
“There's only one way to make sure Dad never gets control again.””
I looked toward the car.
“Play that again.””
Renee did.
Brielle's voice came through clearly.
“There's only one way to make sure Dad never gets control again.””
May you like
And then the recording continued.
“Make it look like the accident wasn't an accident.””
