Chapter 5: The Brother in the Shadows

Raymond Hale had always been the better actor.

That was the thought that kept circling through Vincent’s mind as he stared across the banquet table at his younger brother.

Not smarter.

Not stronger.

Not more successful.

Just better at making people believe what he wanted them to believe.

For forty years, Vincent had built companies, signed contracts, survived lawsuits, and defeated competitors who thought they could take what belonged to him.

But Raymond had done something far more dangerous.

He had learned how to stand beside Vincent without looking like he was waiting for an opportunity.

The room remained silent.

Nobody knew where to look.

Not at Vincent.

Not at Raymond.

Not at Vanessa, who now looked like she wanted to disappear.

Finally, Vincent spoke.

“You wanted what was mine.””

Raymond’s expression hardened.

“I wanted what should have been ours.””

The words surprised even Vincent.

“Ours?””

Raymond stepped away from the table.

“Yes.””

His voice grew stronger.

“You talk about everything you built like you did it alone.””

“I never said that.””

“You didn’t have to.””

Raymond laughed quietly.

“That’s the thing about you, Vincent. You never have to say anything. People just know.””

Vincent watched him carefully.

This was the first time Raymond had ever spoken without trying to make himself likable.

The mask was gone.

And beneath it was years of anger.

“I worked beside you,” Raymond continued.

“I made calls. I fixed problems. I handled people you didn’t want to deal with.””

“And I paid you.””

Raymond smiled.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The way you reduce everything.””

Vincent’s eyes narrowed.

“You were my partner.””

“No.””

Raymond shook his head.

“I was your assistant.””

A few guests shifted uncomfortably.

Because they knew the history.

Everyone knew Raymond had worked with Vincent.

But they also knew the truth.

Vincent was the face of the company.

The person who took the risks.

The person whose name was on every building, every contract, every major decision.

Raymond had always lived in his shadow.

But Vincent had never thought his brother hated him for it.

That was his mistake.

“You think I stole your life,” Vincent said.

Raymond looked away.

“I think you never noticed I was missing from it.””

That sentence hurt more than Vincent expected.

Because somewhere beneath all the anger, there was something real.

A wound.

An old one.

Vincent remembered their childhood.

Two brothers growing up with very little.

Their father had left when Raymond was young.

Their mother worked double shifts just to keep food on the table.

Vincent became the protector.

The provider.

The one who promised his family would never struggle again.

But maybe somewhere along the way, he forgot that protecting someone could still make them feel invisible.

“I gave you everything,” Vincent said.

Raymond nodded.

“You gave me things.””

A pause.

“But you never gave me respect.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Raymond, stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

She was crying now.

“I didn’t know you were going to actually do it.””

Raymond looked at her.

The disappointment on his face was frightening.

“You were supposed to follow instructions.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“And then what?””

Raymond didn’t answer.

She shook her head.

“I knew you wanted control. I knew you wanted him gone. But I thought you just wanted to scare him.””

Vincent looked between them.

The pieces were forming.

Not quickly.

Not completely.

But enough.

“You used her,” Vincent said.

Raymond didn’t deny it.

“She was already angry.””

Vanessa looked down.

Vincent noticed.

That anger.

That resentment.

There had been cracks in the family long before tonight.

Raymond had simply found them.

“You knew she would help because she wanted something,” Vincent said.

Raymond nodded.

“Everyone wants something.””

The statement was cold.

Almost casual.

And that was when Vincent understood.

Raymond wasn’t just angry.

He had convinced himself he was right.

People like that were the most dangerous.

Because they didn’t see themselves as villains.

They saw themselves as victims.

“You planned this carefully,” Vincent said.

Raymond smiled slightly.

“Of course.””

The honesty made everyone uncomfortable.

“You were going to drink the wine. Everyone would assume it was a medical issue. You’re almost seventy. People would say your heart gave out.””

Vincent’s eyes darkened.

Raymond continued.

“No investigation. No questions. No suspicion.””

“And Vanessa?””

Raymond looked at her.

“She was the perfect person to blame.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“You said nobody would know.””

“I said you wouldn’t be involved.””

“You lied.””

Raymond shrugged.

“You believed what you wanted to believe.””

The cruelty of it made Molly look away.

She had seen enough people in her life to recognize someone being used.

And suddenly she understood something.

Vanessa was guilty.

But she wasn’t the person who had designed everything.

Vincent looked at Molly.

“You knew she was involved.””

Molly nodded.

“But I didn’t know how deep.””

Vincent studied her.

“You were afraid.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Molly looked toward Raymond.

“Because he knew everyone here.””

She swallowed.

“And because people like him don’t expect someone like me to notice.””

The words stayed with Vincent.

Someone like me.

A waitress.

Someone invisible.

Someone everyone ignored.

Yet she had been the one person who saw the truth.

Raymond looked at her with irritation.

“You should have stayed quiet.””

Molly held his gaze.

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“But I’m glad I didn’t.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Raymond reached inside his jacket.

Several people gasped.

Marcus immediately moved.

But Raymond didn’t pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a folder.

A thick one.

He placed it on the table.

“This is why you were never going to understand.””

Vincent looked at it.

“What is that?””

Raymond smiled.

“The reason I had to do this.””

May you like

He pushed the folder across the table.

And Vincent realized the poison had only been the beginning.
