Chapter 10: The Voice From the Grave

I stood at the bottom of the staircase, unable to move.

Every instinct told me to run toward the voice.

Every memory told me I couldn’t.

Because that voice belonged to someone who had been gone for six months.

My mother.

The woman who raised me.

The woman who taught me how to tie my shoes, how to shake someone’s hand, how to become a man.

The woman who had always told me there were things in our family we didn’t talk about.

I thought she was protecting me.

Now I wondered if she was protecting herself.

“Mom?”” I whispered.

The house answered with silence.

Ava held onto my leg.

“Daddy…”

I looked down.

Her eyes were wide.

She wasn’t scared of the voice.

She looked like she recognized it.

That frightened me more.

“Have you heard her before?”” I asked.

Ava nodded slowly.

“Sometimes.””

The room went cold.

I looked at Simone.

“You knew?””

She shook her head quickly.

“No.””

“Don’t.””

“I didn’t.””

“You knew about Amara. You knew about Marcus. You knew about my father.””

My voice cracked.

“Why should I believe you now?””

Simone looked destroyed.

“Because I’m scared too.””

The honesty in her voice stopped me.

For once, she wasn’t trying to control the situation.

She was just afraid.

Marcus stepped forward.

“We need to leave.””

I turned.

“What?””

He stared toward the staircase.

“This was never supposed to happen.””

“What wasn’t?””

His expression hardened.

“You finding out this way.””

I looked at the stairs again.

The voice didn’t come back.

But the silence felt like an invitation.

“No.””

I started walking upward.

Marcus grabbed my shoulder.

“Darius.””

I turned.

“What?””

His grip loosened.

“Your father spent years hiding this.””

“And?””

“And people who hide things that big usually have a reason.””

I pulled away.

“I’m done letting everyone else decide what I can handle.””

I climbed the stairs.

One step.

Two.

Three.

Behind me, I heard footsteps.

Marcus followed.

Then Amara.

Then Simone.

Nobody wanted to admit it, but we all needed the answer.

When I reached the room, the door was open.

The same room where Amara had waited.

The same room where every secret had started.

Inside was nothing unusual.

A bed.

A small table.

An empty chair.

Then I saw it.

A tape recorder.

Sitting in the center of the table.

Old.

Dusty.

Waiting.

I stared at it.

“Who put this here?””

Nobody answered.

I pressed the button.

For a few seconds, there was static.

Then a voice.

My mother.

“Darius.””

My knees almost gave out.

It was her.

Not a recording I remembered.

Not a memory.

A message.

“I don’t know when you’ll hear this,” her voice continued.

“But if you’re listening, then the truth finally found you.””

I looked at Marcus.

He looked shocked.

My mother continued.

“I’m sorry.””

Those two words hurt more than anything.

“I spent my life trying to protect you from your father’s mistakes.””

A pause.

A shaky breath.

“But I made my own.””

I stepped closer to the recorder.

“What did you do?”” I whispered.

The recording continued.

“Darius, there is something you need to understand. Your father didn’t lose control of our family.””

Static.

“He built it.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“He created a system of secrets, lies, and fear. Everyone around him became a piece on his board.””

The room was silent.

Even Ava was listening.

“Amara was the first person he tried to erase.””

I looked at Amara.

She looked down.

“Then Marcus.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“And finally, you.””

The recording paused.

Then my mother said:

“Your father was afraid of what would happen if you learned the truth about your birth.””

My heart stopped.

“My birth?””

I looked at Marcus.

He didn’t look surprised.

He looked guilty.

The recording continued.

“You are not who your father told you you were.””

The room seemed to disappear.

My mother’s voice became softer.

“Your real family history was hidden because your father believed blood was power.””

A long pause.

“Darius, if you’re hearing this, you need to find the original documents.””

The tape clicked.

Then one final sentence played.

“The person who can explain everything is the one person you never suspected.””

The recorder stopped.

Nobody spoke.

I turned slowly.

“Who?””

Marcus looked at Simone.

Simone looked at Amara.

Amara looked at the floor.

I felt anger rise.

“No.””

I pointed at all of them.

“We are not doing this again.””

I walked to the table.

“Who is the person?””

Marcus finally spoke.

“Your father’s first wife.””

I froze.

“My father was married before my mother?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Marcus looked at me.

“That’s the first lie you were told.””

Before I could respond, my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then a woman whispered:

“Darius.””

I froze.

Because this voice wasn’t my mother.

It was someone else.

Someone alive.

Someone who had been watching.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

May you like

“The woman your father buried.””

The call ended.
