Chapter 8: The Truth They Buried
Marcus stared at the words on the screen.
*Because Leo was never supposed to survive either.*
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The warehouse seemed to disappear.
The cold air.
The broken windows.
The sound of the wind outside.
All of it faded behind one thought.
Someone had wanted his son gone.
Not Clara.
Not the company.
Leo.
Marcus turned toward the boy.
Leo was still sitting in the chair, frightened and confused.
“Dad?””
That single word brought Marcus back.
He crossed the room immediately.
The man standing behind Leo did not stop him.
Marcus dropped to his knees.
“Are you hurt?””
Leo shook his head.
“No.””
“Did anyone touch you?””
“No.””
Marcus checked his wrists.
The rope was loose enough to remove.
The moment Leo was free, Marcus pulled him into his arms.
He held him tighter than he ever had.
“Dad,” Leo whispered.
“I’m here.””
“Why does everyone keep saying things about me?””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Because he didn’t have an answer.
Because every answer he had given his son for seven years had suddenly become uncertain.
“I don’t know yet.””
Leo looked toward Clara.
“Mom knows?””
Clara’s face broke.
She stepped closer.
“No, baby.””
The word came out naturally.
Like no time had passed.
“I don’t know everything.””
Leo looked at her.
“Then why are people trying to hurt us?””
Clara knelt beside them.
“Because sometimes people are afraid of the truth.””
Leo frowned.
“What truth?””
Clara looked at Marcus.
Neither of them wanted to say it.
Not yet.
Not to a seven-year-old child.
But the truth had already found him.
Elias stood near the center of the warehouse, watching them.
Marcus noticed.
“You.””
Elias looked up.
“You helped her.””
“Yes.””
“You knew all of this?””
Elias didn’t answer.
Marcus stood slowly.
“I’m asking you a question.””
“I knew pieces.””
“Pieces?””
“Yes.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Then start putting them together.””
Elias looked at Clara.
She nodded.
“Tell him.””
Elias took a deep breath.
“My real name is Elias Grant.””
Marcus waited.
“I worked for Richard.””
The anger returned instantly.
“You worked for him?””
“I did.””
“Doing what?””
Elias looked at the screens.
“Cleaning problems.””
Marcus understood.
“You were the person who erased evidence.””
Elias looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
Leo held Clara’s hand tighter.
Marcus saw it.
The fear.
The confusion.
And it made every word harder.
“Why should I trust you?””
Elias accepted the question.
“You shouldn’t.””
The answer surprised Marcus.
“I’m not asking you to forgive me.””
“Then why are you here?””
“Because three years ago, I made the wrong choice.””
He looked at Clara.
“I thought I was protecting the company.””
Then at Leo.
“I didn’t realize I was helping destroy a family.””
Marcus stared.
“What happened the night Clara disappeared?””
Elias looked down.
“I was there.””
The words hit.
Marcus’s expression changed.
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“You watched it happen.””
Elias swallowed.
“Yes.””
Marcus moved forward.
David grabbed his arm.
“Marcus.””
“Let go.””
“He’s telling the truth.””
Marcus looked at David.
“You knew?””
David looked away.
“I suspected.””
The betrayal was endless.
Every answer created another wound.
“What happened?”” Marcus asked again.
Elias closed his eyes.
“Richard found out Clara discovered the financial records.””
Marcus listened.
“She wasn’t just looking at the company’s debt.””
“Then what?””
“She found the transfers.””
“What transfers?””
“Payments.””
Elias looked at the screens.
“Payments from companies that didn’t exist.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“Fake companies.””
“Yes.””
“And the money?””
“Was being moved through your business.””
Marcus looked at David.
David lowered his head.
“I didn’t know.””
Marcus believed him.
That was the worst part.
David was guilty.
But maybe not of everything.
Elias continued.
“Clara copied the records.””
“The bracelet.””
Elias nodded.
“She hid the information inside it.””
Marcus looked down at the bracelet.
“She knew someone would search her.””
“Yes.””
“She planned this?””
“She planned a way to survive.””
Clara touched the bracelet.
“I didn’t know if anyone would find it.””
Her voice became quiet.
“I only knew Marcus would recognize it.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You trusted I would find it.””
Clara smiled sadly.
“I knew you would never stop looking.””
The words hurt.
Because he had stopped.
Not intentionally.
But he had accepted she was gone.
And now he hated himself for it.
A sudden sound interrupted them.
A door opening.
Everyone turned.
Richard walked into the warehouse.
No guards.
No weapon.
Just himself.
Calm.
Confident.
Like he owned the place.
Marcus immediately stepped in front of Leo.
Richard looked at the boy.
Then at Clara.
“So.””
His voice was almost gentle.
“The family is finally reunited.””
Marcus’s anger was immediate.
“You took my son.””
Richard looked disappointed.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That I never wanted Leo hurt.””
Marcus laughed.
“You kidnapped him.””
“I needed you here.””
“You could have called.””
“And you would have brought the bracelet?””
Marcus said nothing.
Richard smiled.
“Exactly.””
Clara stepped forward.
“You ruined my life.””
Richard looked at her.
“I saved it.””
Her face twisted with disbelief.
“You trapped me.””
“I kept you alive.””
“You stole three years from me.””
Richard’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Marcus noticed.
Regret.
For a second.
Then it disappeared.
“Clara, you were always too emotional.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Careful.””
Richard looked at him.
“You want the truth?””
“Yes.””
“Then hear all of it.””
He walked toward the screens.
“Leo is connected to this because of what Clara discovered.””
Marcus frowned.
“What does my son have to do with your crimes?””
Richard looked at him.
“Your son isn’t the reason.””
A pause.
“He’s the evidence.””
The room went silent.
Clara’s face changed.
“No.””
Richard continued.
“When Clara found the records, she also found something else.””
Marcus looked at Clara.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“I didn’t know.””
Richard smiled.
“Of course you didn’t.””
Marcus’s voice became dangerous.
“What did she find?””
Richard pointed at the screen.
A file appeared.
A medical document.
Marcus felt something wrong before he even read it.
The title.
*GENETIC TEST RESULTS.*
Leo’s name was on it.
His heart dropped.
“No.””
Clara stepped back.
“No.””
Richard watched them.
“Three years ago, Clara discovered that Leo had been part of a private research program.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What are you talking about?””
“Your son was tested.””
“By who?””
Richard didn’t answer.
“Why?””
“Because his DNA was unusual.””
The room went silent.
Marcus looked at Clara.
She shook her head.
“I didn’t know.””
Richard continued.
“That’s why Clara had to disappear.””
Marcus stared.
“That makes no sense.””
“It does.””
Richard looked at Leo.
“They weren’t trying to kill him.””
A pause.
“They were trying to take him.””
Marcus felt sick.
“Who?””
Richard smiled.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Not of Marcus.
Of the people above him.
“The people who funded everything.””
The lights suddenly flickered.
Richard looked toward the entrance.
His expression changed.
“What?””
A sound came from outside.
Multiple vehicles.
Doors opening.
Footsteps.
Richard’s confidence vanished.
Elias noticed.
“They’re here.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Who?””
Elias whispered:
“The people Richard was protecting.””
Everyone froze.
Richard looked at Marcus.
And for the first time, there was genuine fear in his eyes.
“Take Leo and run.””
Marcus stared.
“You expect me to trust you?””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
He looked toward the door.
“I expect you to understand.””
The warehouse lights went out.
A voice echoed from the darkness.
“Richard.””
Everyone froze.
Because the voice wasn’t unfamiliar.
It was someone Marcus had heard before.
Someone who had been part of his life.
Someone who had stood beside him through every tragedy.
A figure stepped into the doorway.
And Marcus realized the truth was much worse than he imagined.
May you like
Richard wasn’t the mastermind.
He was only the person who took the blame.
