Chapter 8: My Mother Had Chosen My Husband Before I Met Him

The room seemed to shrink around me.

I looked at my mother.

She was staring at the phone as though Lauren's voice had come from a grave.

"That's a lie," Mom whispered.

Lauren heard her.

"Hello, Patricia.""

Mom flinched.

"Don't you dare.""

"Don't I dare what? Tell your daughter what happened?""

Dad reached for the phone.

"Lauren, this is Robert Bennett. I need you to explain exactly what you're talking about.""

Lauren took a breath.

"Mr. Bennett, I worked for Marcus's company before he met Nia. I also handled some financial records for Patricia's consulting business.""

Dad frowned.

"My wife never had a consulting business.""

"She did. It was registered under the name Bennett Strategic Solutions.""

I looked at Mom.

She wouldn't meet my eyes.

Lauren continued.

"Patricia contacted Marcus about three years ago. She wanted someone who could help restructure the family property company without alerting Robert.""

Dad's face hardened.

"Why?""

"Because she had accumulated debts she couldn't repay.""

Mom stood.

"That's enough.""

Dad raised his hand.

"Sit down.""

She looked at him in disbelief.

"Robert—"

"Sit.""

For once, she obeyed.

Lauren continued.

"Marcus was introduced to the family through a charity fundraiser. Patricia arranged for him to sit beside Nia. She knew Nia was interested in property development and had inherited voting shares.""

I felt my stomach turn.

The charity fundraiser.

Three years ago.

I remembered wearing a navy dress and arriving late because of work.

Mom had waved me over.

"Nia, come meet Marcus. He's doing wonderful things in real estate.""

I'd smiled politely.

Marcus had offered me a glass of wine.

We'd spent the evening discussing architecture, travel, and our favorite cities.

I'd thought we'd met by chance.

I'd thought the connection was fate.

It wasn't.

I looked at my mother.

"You arranged our first meeting?""

She pressed her lips together.

"Your father was struggling.""

Dad turned toward her.

"Don't use me as an excuse.""

Mom's eyes filled.

"I was trying to save everything.""

"You were trying to save yourself.""

She looked at him.

"Do you know what it was like watching you spend money on properties while I couldn't pay the bills?""

Dad stared.

"What bills?""

Mom laughed bitterly.

"You never noticed.""

"Because you never told me!""

"I was ashamed.""

The silence that followed was heavy.

For the first time, I wondered how much of my parents' marriage had been built on things they never said.

But that didn't excuse what they'd done to me.

I turned toward Lauren.

"Why did you leave Marcus?""

"I found the arrangement between him and your mother. I realized he wasn't just manipulating investors. He was targeting women with access to inherited assets.""

Vanessa leaned forward.

"Did you keep copies?""

"Yes. I took the original contract before Marcus could destroy it.""

"Where is it?""

"In a storage unit. I mailed copies to my attorney, but I still have the original.""

Dad rubbed his forehead.

"Can you send it to us?""

"I can, but there's something you need to know first.""

I waited.

"Marcus wasn't supposed to marry Nia immediately.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"Originally, the plan was for him to become a business adviser. He would gain the family's trust, help manage the property portfolio, and eventually become a financial representative.""

I looked at Mom.

"Then why did he propose?""

Lauren paused.

"Because something changed.""

"What?""

"Patricia discovered that Nia's grandfather had added a clause to the trust. Once Nia turned thirty, she would gain independent control of the voting shares.""

I remembered my grandfather's birthday cards.

He had always written the same thing.

Never let anyone make decisions about your future without you.

I had never understood why.

Lauren continued.

"Marcus was running out of time. He needed the marriage to activate the alternate transfer clause before Nia's thirtieth birthday.""

I looked at Dad.

"My birthday is in four months.""

He nodded slowly.

"Exactly.""

I felt cold.

The wedding hadn't been a celebration.

It had been a deadline.

Marcus hadn't proposed because he couldn't wait to spend his life with me.

He had proposed because he couldn't wait any longer to access my inheritance.

Brielle suddenly stood.

"Then why did he get involved with me?""

Nobody answered.

She turned toward Lauren's voice.

"Was I part of the plan too?""

Lauren was quiet.

Then she said, "I don't know the entire arrangement. But I know Marcus was told that if Nia refused to sign anything, he could use Brielle to pressure her.""

Brielle covered her mouth.

I looked at my sister.

"Did he ever ask you to convince me to sign documents?""

She hesitated.

"Once.""

"When?""

"Two months ago.""

I stared.

"What did he say?""

"He told me you were nervous about combining finances after marriage. He said I should reassure you that he'd never misuse the trust.""

I felt my hands curl.

"And you did?""

Brielle began crying.

"I thought he was trying to make you feel safe.""

"You told me he was trustworthy.""

"I know.""

"You said I was lucky to have him.""

"I know, Nia.""

I turned away.

I couldn't carry her guilt and mine at the same time.

Dad took the phone.

"Lauren, can you send the contract tonight?""

"Yes. But I have another reason for contacting you.""

He paused.

"What reason?""

"I received a letter from a law firm yesterday. They claim I owe money to a company I never worked with.""

Dad looked confused.

"What company?""

"Reed Property Development.""

My stomach dropped.

Lauren continued.

"The debt is listed as a personal guarantee. It carries a signature that looks like mine.""

Vanessa whispered, "He's doing it again.""

Lauren agreed.

"Someone is using my identity to guarantee Marcus's loans.""

Dad looked at the bank records.

"How much?""

"Nine hundred thousand dollars.""

I closed my eyes.

Marcus wasn't just trying to take my inheritance.

He was building a financial disaster around everyone who came near him.

And my mother had helped him.

A sudden knock interrupted us.

A man in a dark suit stood outside the bridal room.

He introduced himself as the restaurant's general manager.

"Mr. Bennett, I'm sorry to interrupt. There's a situation downstairs.""

Dad frowned.

"What situation?""

"Mr. Reed has returned.""

My heart sank.

"Why?""

The manager hesitated.

"He's addressing the guests.""

I moved toward the doorway.

Through the glass panel, I could see the ballroom.

Marcus stood beside the microphone.

His tuxedo jacket was buttoned.

His expression was composed.

He looked like a groom again.

Except he wasn't speaking about love.

He was speaking about me.

"...and unfortunately, Nia has been under tremendous emotional stress," he was saying.

My mother gasped.

Marcus continued.

"I know everyone here cares about her. But she's confused, and some people have been feeding her false information.""

Vanessa stepped beside me.

"He's trying to control the story.""

Marcus lifted a hand.

"I ask everyone to be patient. We will be proceeding with the wedding once Nia has had time to calm down.""

I felt something snap inside me.

He was announcing that I was unstable.

In front of my family.

My friends.

Two hundred people who had traveled to celebrate our marriage.

He was trying to make my refusal look like a breakdown.

Then he said something that made me freeze.

"Unfortunately, her mother and I are concerned about her ability to make important decisions today.""

I turned toward Mom.

Her face had gone white.

Because I suddenly understood.

The medical document.

The psychological assessment.

The forged trust amendment.

They weren't separate schemes.

They were connected.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Can you prove my mother helped him?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

I turned toward Dad.

"Can we get that recording played downstairs?""

Dad looked at me.

"Are you sure?""

I watched Marcus smiling at the guests.

"Absolutely.""

I walked into the ballroom.

The conversations stopped as I approached the microphone.

Marcus turned.

His smile disappeared.

I took the microphone from his hand.

Then I looked at the two hundred people who had come to witness my wedding.

"My name is Nia Bennett," I said.

"And before anyone decides that I'm confused, I'd like you to hear what my mother and my fiancé planned for me.""

I pressed the button on Vanessa's recording device.

My mother's voice filled the ballroom.

"Once the marriage certificate is signed, the financial arrangement can proceed.""

A gasp traveled through the room.

Marcus lunged toward me.

But Dad stepped between us.

And then my mother did something nobody expected.

She grabbed the microphone.

"Stop!"" she screamed.

The ballroom fell silent.

She looked directly at me.

May you like

Then she said:

"Fine. You want the truth? Ask your father why he never told you that your grandfather didn't leave the trust to you.""
