Chapter 4: The Lie That Changed Everything
I read the anonymous message until the words blurred.
Ask your husband why he met its director at the Grand Regent Hotel three weeks ago.
Grandma stood beside the study window, holding my phone as though it might suddenly reveal something worse.
“Emily,” she said carefully, “I don't want you to accuse Daniel based on an anonymous message.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
I looked at the photograph of my grandfather hanging above the desk.
“I want to believe him. That's what frightens me.””
For six years, Daniel had been the person I trusted most. I had defended him when Vanessa criticized my cooking, when she mocked my career, and when she insisted that I wasn't sophisticated enough for the Whitmore family.
I had believed that whatever happened outside our marriage, Daniel and I were on the same side.
Now I couldn't remember the last time he had defended someone when doing so might cost him something.
Grandma returned my phone.
“Don't confront him until you know what you're dealing with.””
I nodded, though my hands were shaking.
“Can I see the transaction records again?””
She pushed the red folder across the desk.
I examined the payments to Northstar Advisory Group. The first was dated four months earlier. The next appeared three weeks later, followed by two more within the same month.
Each payment carried a different description, but the approval code remained consistent.
Then I noticed a reference number repeated on three documents.
It matched the final digits of Daniel's corporate expense account.
“Grandma, what does this mean?””
She leaned over my shoulder.
“That account belongs to Daniel's department.””
“Could someone else have used it?””
“Yes.””
“But someone would need access.””
“Correct.””
I photographed the documents with my phone, making sure not to disturb the originals.
Then I found the payment dated three weeks earlier.
It was for $148,000.
The authorization appeared to have been entered shortly before Daniel's supposed business meeting at the Grand Regent.
My stomach tightened.
“I'm going home.””
Grandma caught my wrist.
“Listen to me first. Whatever Daniel has done, you don't have to decide your entire future tonight.””
“What if he's stealing from you?””
“Then the law will deal with it.””
“What if he's been lying to me?””
Her expression softened.
“Then you will decide what kind of life you are willing to accept.””
I hugged her before leaving.
She held me for a long time, her familiar lavender scent surrounding me.
“Remember something, Emily,” she whispered.
“You can love someone and still require them to tell you the truth.””
The drive home took twenty-three minutes.
I barely remembered any of it.
When I entered the house, the birthday decorations were gone. Someone had cleared the cake plates, collected the champagne glasses, and restored the living room to its usual immaculate condition.
Only a small piece of gold ribbon remained beneath the sofa.
Daniel was standing beside the fireplace.
His tie was loosened, and his jacket lay over the armchair. Vanessa sat on the couch with a glass of water, her eyes red but her posture rigid.
Both looked up when I entered.
Daniel crossed the room.
“Thank God. Where have you been?””
“With Grandma.””
His shoulders tightened.
“You should have called.””
“I was busy learning who owns our house.””
Vanessa stood abruptly.
“See? This is exactly what I warned you about. Helen has been feeding you lies.””
I turned toward her.
“Then show me the truth.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Daniel reached for my hand.
“Emily, please. Can we talk privately?””
I pulled away.
“Not until you answer one question.””
His jaw tightened.
“What question?””
“Were you at the Grand Regent Hotel three weeks ago?””
For a fraction of a second, he looked genuinely confused.
Then his expression changed.
“Who told you that?””
“Were you there?””
“Emily, I meet clients at hotels all the time.””
“That's not an answer.””
He glanced at his mother.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous. You're letting an anonymous text destroy your marriage.””
I looked directly at Daniel.
“Were you there?””
He exhaled sharply.
“Yes. I was there.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“Who did you meet?””
“A business contact.””
“From Northstar Advisory Group?””
Daniel went completely still.
Vanessa's water glass stopped halfway to her mouth.
I felt a cold certainty settle over me.
“You know the company.””
Daniel rubbed his face.
“Emily, it's not what you think.””
“Then tell me what it is.””
He looked toward the windows, then back at me.
“Northstar was being considered for a consulting contract. I met its director to discuss the proposal.””
“For $148,000?””
His face drained of color.
“Where did you get that number?””
“From the records Grandma showed me.””
Vanessa slammed her glass onto the side table.
“Helen had no right to show you confidential company documents!””
“Did you authorize the payment?”” I asked Daniel.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
I held his gaze.
“Did you help Northstar get paid?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation was more painful than any confession.
“Daniel?””
“I introduced them to the company,” he admitted.
“They claimed they could reduce operating costs and restructure several departments.””
“Who owns Northstar?””
“I don't know.””
Vanessa made a small, involuntary sound.
I turned toward her.
“Do you?””
She folded her arms.
“I'm not discussing business with you.””
“You've been discussing business with everyone for years.””
“Because I understand it.””
“Then explain why nearly five million dollars was almost transferred out of Grandma's reserve account.””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“That transfer was temporary.””
Daniel stared at her.
“What?””
She ignored him.
“It was a financial arrangement. The funds were going to be returned.””
“Who authorized it?”” I asked.
Vanessa pointed at me.
“You have no idea how complicated these matters are.””
“Then simplify them.””
For several seconds, she looked as if she might strike me.
Instead, she turned to Daniel.
“Tell your wife to stop interfering before she ruins everything.””
Daniel looked between us.
“Mom, did you authorize the transfer?””
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
“I was protecting this family.””
“From what?””
She gave him a bitter laugh.
“From your grandmother taking everything away because she doesn't like how I've managed the company.””
“That's not an answer.””
“It's the only answer you need!””
The shout echoed through the living room.
Daniel stepped back.
I had seen Vanessa angry countless times, but I had never seen her lose control in front of him.
She smoothed the front of her blouse, forcing herself to speak more quietly.
“Helen has spent years pretending to be harmless. Now she's decided to play queen again, and you're all falling for it.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Is that what you believe?””
He didn't answer.
I turned toward the staircase.
“Emily, wait,” he called.
I stopped but didn't turn around.
“I'm asking you to trust me.””
I closed my eyes.
“You had six years to earn that trust, Daniel. Tonight, I'm asking you for one thing you should have given me without being asked.””
I faced him.
“The truth.””
His lips parted.
Before he could speak, Vanessa's phone rang.
She looked at the screen and immediately rejected the call.
It rang again.
This time, Daniel noticed the name.
“Who is Mark Ellison?””
Vanessa snatched up the phone.
“Someone from the office.””
“Why is he calling you at eleven thirty at night?””
“Because this is a business emergency.””
She walked toward the hallway.
Daniel followed her.
“Mom, wait.””
She stopped beside the stairs.
He lowered his voice.
“Is Mark the director of Northstar?””
Vanessa's silence answered him.
Daniel stared at her.
“You told me Northstar was an independent consulting firm.””
“It is.””
“Then why are you avoiding the question?””
She looked at me.
For the first time, I understood that Vanessa wasn't merely afraid of losing money or status.
She was afraid that Daniel might discover something she had spent years keeping from him.
Her phone rang a third time.
She answered it, forgetting that the speaker was still connected.
Mark's voice came through clearly.
“Vanessa, we have a serious problem. Whitmore's bank has frozen the transfer, and the lawyers are asking for the original authorization.””
Vanessa went rigid.
Mark continued.
“And there's something else. Someone accessed the old company files tonight.””
A pause.
Then he said the words that made my blood run cold.
“They've found Richard's letter.””
Vanessa ended the call.
Daniel stared at her.
“What letter?””
May you like
She looked at him, and for once, the woman who always seemed to have an answer had absolutely nothing to say.
Then she whispered, “Your father should never have written it.””
