Chapter 2: The Name on the Document
Vanessa's wineglass trembled against the marble tabletop.
She caught it before it tipped, then forced a laugh that sounded nothing like her earlier amusement.
“That's ridiculous,” she said.
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
Malcolm didn't answer.
He held the leather folder against his chest, his thumb pressed tightly along its edge.
Naomi noticed the gesture.
“Malcolm,” she said calmly, “who has seen the document?””
“Two members of the board. Our outside counsel. And me.””
“Has anyone contacted the authorities?””
“Not yet.””
Vanessa pushed her chair backward so abruptly that its legs scraped across the marble.
“Excuse me. What is this supposed to be?””
Malcolm turned toward her.
“Ms. Vanessa, I can't discuss confidential board matters on the restaurant floor.””
“Then stop discussing them in front of me!””
Her voice carried across the room.
A server carrying a tray of sparkling water slowed near the next table. Two diners exchanged glances. Danielle hurriedly placed her phone facedown, suddenly less interested in recording the confrontation.
Vanessa pointed at Naomi.
“She doesn't even work here. Why are you calling her upstairs?””
Malcolm's expression tightened.
“I didn't say she worked here.””
“Then what did you say?””
“I said the board needs her.””
Vanessa stared at him.
For once, she had no immediate comeback.
Naomi reached down, picked up the discarded napkin, and placed it neatly on the empty chair beside her rather than on the floor.
She didn't do it for Vanessa.
She did it because leaving something dirty on the floor had never been her idea of winning.
Then she faced Malcolm.
“Is the board meeting already in session?””
“Yes, Ms. Carter.””
“Who requested that I come?””
Malcolm swallowed.
“Mr. Whitmore. He said you needed to see the original.””
Naomi's expression changed almost imperceptibly.
“The original?””
“Yes.””
“Not a copy?””
“No, ma'am.””
Naomi nodded once.
“Then let's go.””
Vanessa stepped between Naomi and the staircase.
“Absolutely not.””
Malcolm looked startled.
Vanessa planted one hand on the back of her chair and lifted her chin. The confidence was returning, but now it looked carefully assembled rather than natural.
“I don't know what game you're playing, Naomi, but you aren't going to walk into some private meeting and start making accusations about me.””
Naomi studied her.
“I haven't accused you of anything.””
“You're standing here letting him say my name!””
“Malcolm said your name. You reacted.””
“Because this is insane!””
“Then you should have nothing to worry about.””
Brielle rose from her chair.
“Vanessa, maybe we should leave.””
Vanessa whipped around.
“Sit down.””
Brielle froze.
“I was just saying—”
“I heard what you were saying.””
Vanessa grabbed Brielle's handbag from the edge of the chair and shoved it into her hands.
“You don't get to abandon me in the middle of something and pretend you're being helpful.””
Brielle's face hardened.
“You dropped a napkin at someone's feet and told her to pick it up. I think you've created enough of a scene without me.””
Vanessa stared at her former ally.
Then she turned back to Naomi.
“Look at you,” she said bitterly.
“Standing there like you're somebody important.””
Naomi's voice remained soft.
“Why does that bother you?””
“Because I know you.””
“No,” Naomi replied.
“You know who I was when you thought you had nothing to lose by humiliating me.””
Vanessa's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Malcolm shifted beside Naomi.
“Ms. Carter, we should proceed. The board has been waiting.””
Naomi nodded and stepped toward the staircase.
Vanessa followed immediately.
“I'm coming, too.””
Malcolm moved to block the first step.
“I'm sorry. The meeting is restricted.””
Vanessa gave a sharp, disbelieving laugh.
“Restricted? My name is on the document, apparently. You just said it yourself.””
Malcolm's face tightened.
“I said your name appears on the lease.””
“Exactly!””
“That does not mean you have permission to enter the boardroom.””
Vanessa looked around, suddenly aware of how many people were watching.
She lowered her voice.
“Malcolm, you know me. I've brought clients here. I've introduced investors to this establishment. I've spent thousands of dollars at this restaurant.””
“I appreciate your patronage.””
“Then act like it.””
Malcolm straightened his tie.
“I am acting in accordance with the board's instructions.””
Vanessa's cheeks flushed.
Naomi watched the exchange without interrupting.
Finally, Vanessa turned to her.
“Whatever you think you've discovered, you're making a mistake.””
“Perhaps.””
“You don't understand what that document means.””
Naomi paused on the first stair.
“Then explain it.””
Vanessa's eyes darted toward Malcolm's folder.
For half a second, fear eclipsed her anger.
“I can't explain something I haven't seen.””
“Then why are you so certain I'm making a mistake?””
Vanessa looked away.
Upstairs, a door opened.
A tall Black man in a navy suit appeared at the landing. His silver hair was neatly trimmed, and he held a second folder beneath one arm.
“Naomi,” he called.
“We need you now.””
Naomi looked up.
“I'm coming, Richard.””
Richard Whitmore glanced at Vanessa.
His expression hardened.
“She's here?””
Vanessa's shoulders stiffened.
“Mr. Whitmore, I think there's been some confusion.””
Richard descended two steps.
“Then you'll be pleased to know we've spent the morning clearing it up.””
He turned to Naomi.
“The original lease has a signature that doesn't belong there.””
Naomi's gaze sharpened.
“Whose signature?””
Richard opened his folder.
“Yours.””
The words seemed to strike Vanessa harder than a slap.
She grabbed the stair railing.
Naomi stared at Richard.
“My signature?””
“Yes.””
“That is impossible.””
“I know.””
Richard opened the folder to reveal a photocopied page, but he kept it angled toward himself.
“The document claims you personally authorized the transfer of the restaurant's controlling property rights.””
Naomi took one step closer.
“I never signed such an agreement.””
Richard nodded.
“That's why the board requested your presence.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. No, that's not what happened.””
Richard looked directly at her.
“Then perhaps you'd like to explain why your name appears beneath the witness declaration.””
Vanessa's lips parted.
She looked at Naomi, then at the document.
And when Richard turned the page, Naomi saw something that made her stop breathing for a moment.
The signature wasn't merely forged.
It had been copied from a private document that only three people should ever have seen.
One of them was Naomi.
May you like
One was Richard Whitmore.
And the third was the woman standing at the bottom of the stairs.
