Chapter 6: The Cost Of The Truth
The press conference happened outside the King Foundation building downtown.
By the time Marcus stepped onto the platform, reporters were already waiting.
The story had leaked.
Not everything.
Just enough.
People knew the engagement had ended.
They knew there were questions about the foundation.
They knew Marcus King’s perfect image had cracks.
I stood near the side with Mama Loretta.
She held my hand.
“You nervous?”” she asked.
“A little.””
“Why?””
“Because everyone is watching.””
She smiled.
“Let them watch.””
Marcus stepped forward.
The cameras started flashing.
For a moment, he looked exactly like the man everyone knew.
Confident.
Successful.
Untouchable.
Then he spoke.
“I want to address recent events involving my family and my foundation.””
The crowd became quiet.
“I have spent my life building businesses. Creating opportunities. Supporting communities.””
He paused.
“But I made the mistake of believing that success alone meant I understood everything happening around me.””
That sentence surprised everyone.
Because powerful people rarely admitted mistakes publicly.
“I failed to recognize that some people inside my organization were using my name and my resources in ways that went against my values.””
The reporters began asking questions.
Marcus continued.
“I want to be clear. Any employee or former employee who was pressured, threatened, or mistreated will be heard.””
A reporter raised a hand.
“Mr. King, are you saying your fiancée was involved?””
Marcus looked toward the cameras.
“I am saying that an investigation is ongoing.””
He didn’t attack her.
He didn’t insult her.
He stayed with facts.
That told me more about him than anger ever could.
Another reporter asked:
“Did you know about these payments?””
“No.””
“Do you take responsibility?””
Marcus answered immediately.
“Yes.””
That answer surprised me.
He could have blamed everyone else.
He could have said he was betrayed.
Instead, he accepted that leadership meant responsibility.
After the conference, we returned to the estate.
But the peace didn’t last.
David arrived with new information.
“Mr. King.””
Marcus looked up.
“What now?””
David handed him a file.
“We found the person who originally created the false agreements.””
Marcus opened it.
His face changed.
I stepped closer.
“What is it?””
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he handed me the paper.
At the bottom of the agreement was a signature.
Not Charles Whitaker’s.
Not Simone’s.
Someone else’s.
Someone who worked inside the estate.
I looked at the name.
My heart dropped.
Because I knew that person.
Everybody did.
The person had been there for years.
The person who knew every employee.
Every schedule.
Every private meeting.
Every family secret.
I looked at Marcus.
“Are you sure?””
He nodded slowly.
“The evidence is clear.””
“Who is it?””
Marcus looked toward the hallway.
And before he could answer, footsteps echoed.
The person walked into the room.
Completely unaware that everything had changed.
Marcus stared.
The betrayal was standing right there.
And when he finally spoke the name, I felt the entire world shift.
“James.””
The longtime estate manager stopped walking.
His face went pale.
May you like
Because he knew.
The truth had finally found him.
