Chapter 5: The Woman Who Wanted My Signature

Helen arrived at Serenity Cove at 8:30 the following morning.

She came carrying a leather briefcase and wearing the same expression I'd seen when she helped me negotiate my first commercial property purchase: calm, focused, and entirely unimpressed by other people's attempts to intimidate her.

We met in a private conference room overlooking the resort's gardens.

Richard had arranged for the original records to be available through the company's secure system. Helen reviewed them while I sat across from her, listening to the soft click of her pen against the table.

After twenty minutes, she looked up.

“There's something you should understand before we go any further.””

I straightened.

“Tell me.””

“The document we've received is not proof that Vanessa has legal authority over your finances. It appears to be a proposed power of attorney, but we need to verify its history, whether any related documents exist, and whether your signature was copied from a legitimate source.””

“Can she take my money?””

“Not merely because she possesses this document. We'll notify the relevant institutions, review your existing authorizations, and determine whether any access has been granted improperly.””

I exhaled slowly.

“What about Daniel?””

“His involvement is a separate question. We need facts, not assumptions.””

I appreciated that.

Daniel was my son. Whatever he'd done, I didn't want anger to become an excuse for me to stop thinking clearly.

Helen opened her laptop.

“The resort email was sent from an account registered under Daniel's name. The original message included several attachments. One was the spending authorization. Another was a document describing a proposed financial-management arrangement.””

“What kind of arrangement?””

“It suggests consolidating certain administrative responsibilities under a single representative. The language is vague, but the power-of-attorney form names Vanessa.””

I stared at the screen.

“Why would she need to manage my affairs?””

“That's one of the questions we need to answer.””

I thought about Vanessa's behavior over the previous year.

Her questions about whether I planned to keep working.

Her comments about how exhausting it must be to manage properties.

Her suggestion that I should let Daniel handle some of my investments because he was younger and understood modern business.

At the time, I'd dismissed those remarks as clumsy attempts at concern.

Now they sounded different.

“There's something else,” Helen said.

She turned her laptop toward me.

The attachment contained a list of my properties and investment holdings. Several entries were incomplete, but the document included information that wasn't publicly available.

I recognized the account reference from a statement I'd kept in my home office.

My throat tightened.

“Where did they get this?””

“We don't know yet.””

Helen closed the laptop halfway.

“Margaret, I want you to focus on three things. First, we secure your accounts. Second, we preserve evidence. Third, we don't confront anyone with accusations we can't yet substantiate.””

I nodded.

“What about the resort?””

“Richard should follow the company's normal procedures. Your personal finances and the hotel's financial systems are separate matters. We need to keep them separate.””

Richard, seated near the window, nodded.

“We've already removed the proposed spending authorization from the active reservation record and flagged any new requests requiring Mrs. Whitmore's direct approval.””

“Good,” Helen said.

“Please keep the access logs and preserve the original files.””

“I will.””

When the meeting ended, Helen accompanied me to the lobby.

Daniel was waiting near the entrance.

He stood the moment he saw us.

“Mom, can we talk?””

Helen glanced at me.

“Your decision.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Five minutes. Here.””

He swallowed and nodded.

Helen stepped a short distance away but remained within sight.

Daniel approached with both hands in his pockets.

“Vanessa says you're trying to get her in trouble.””

“I'm securing my finances.””

“She thinks you want to ruin her reputation.””

“I haven't discussed her reputation with anyone. I've asked my attorney to investigate documents bearing my signature that I didn't sign.””

He looked away.

“Mom, she says you misunderstood the power-of-attorney form.””

“Did she explain why she created one in my name?””

“She said it was a draft.””

“A draft for what?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“She wanted to help you manage things.””

“Then why didn't she ask me?””

He said nothing.

I waited.

Finally, he spoke.

“Vanessa thinks you're doing too much. She says you work constantly, and you're always worrying about your properties.””

I almost laughed, but the sound caught in my throat.

“Daniel, I built a business. I enjoy managing it. If I ever decide I need help, I'll choose the person who helps me.””

“She was trying to be useful.””

“By copying my signature?””

He looked startled.

“She didn't tell me she copied it.””

“But you knew the form existed.””

“Yes.””

“And you never called me to ask whether I wanted it?””

“No.””

I nodded slowly.

“Then you understand why I need distance right now.””

He stepped closer.

“Please don't do this to our family.””

I looked at him.

“I'm not doing anything to your family. I'm protecting myself.””

He opened his mouth, then closed it.

Before he could speak again, Vanessa emerged from the elevator.

She wore a white linen outfit and oversized sunglasses. She stopped when she saw Helen standing nearby.

“What's going on?”” she asked.

“I'm talking to my mother,” Daniel replied.

Vanessa glanced at me.

“Of course you are.””

She approached, her heels clicking against the marble.

“Margaret, I think we need to clear up this misunderstanding before it gets any worse.””

“There's no misunderstanding about whether I signed that document.””

Her jaw tightened.

“You're making a serious accusation.””

“I'm stating a fact.””

“You don't even know what happened.””

“Then you should have no objection to an independent review.””

For a moment, her expression faltered.

Then she looked toward Helen.

“And who is she supposed to be? Your lawyer?””

“Helen Brooks,” Helen replied calmly.

“I represent Mrs. Whitmore.””

Vanessa removed her sunglasses.

“So you've hired a lawyer against your own family.””

Helen didn't react.

“Mrs. Whitmore has retained counsel to protect her financial interests. That's entirely appropriate.””

Vanessa gave a brittle laugh.

“This is unbelievable. We came here for a family vacation.””

“You came here as my guests,” I said.

“That doesn't give you permission to use my accounts.””

She looked at Daniel.

“Tell her what you told me.””

Daniel's face tightened.

“Vanessa, stop.””

“No. You told me your mother would eventually need help. You said we should get everything organized before something happened.””

Daniel looked as if she'd slapped him.

“I said she should have a plan. I never said to do this.””

“But you agreed with me!””

“I agreed that she should have a plan. Not that we should make decisions for her.””

The distinction landed hard.

Vanessa turned back to me.

“You see? He's trying to blame me for everything.””

“No,” I said.

“He's finally explaining his own choices.””

She stared at me with open hostility.

“You think you're so untouchable because you have money.””

“I think my money belongs to me.””

“And what happens when you're gone?”” she demanded.

“Are we supposed to stand around waiting for permission to breathe?””

The lobby went quiet.

Daniel stared at her.

“Vanessa, what is wrong with you?””

She blinked, apparently surprised that he'd spoken so sharply.

“I'm asking a reasonable question.””

“No. You're talking about my mother's death as though it's a business opportunity.””

“That's not what I meant.””

“Then what did you mean?””

She had no answer.

I felt something inside me settle.

Not satisfaction. Not victory.

Clarity.

“Vanessa,” I said, “you and Daniel are welcome to remain at the resort under your original reservations. The additional expenses won't be charged to me without my authorization. My attorney will handle the financial questions.””

She crossed her arms.

“And if I refuse?””

“Then you'll have to resolve your disagreement with the resort through its normal procedures.””

Her face reddened.

“You can't just abandon us here.””

“I haven't abandoned anyone. You've been given rooms, meals, and every service included in the original arrangements.””

She looked toward Richard, who had quietly joined us.

“You're really going to let her do this?””

Richard maintained his professional tone.

“Mrs. Whitmore is entitled to control her own account, Mrs. Carter. We apply the same authorization standards to every guest.””

Vanessa turned on her heel and stormed toward the elevators.

Daniel remained behind.

For several seconds, he watched the doors close.

Then he looked at me.

“I didn't know she would say that.””

“Daniel, knowing what someone might do is not the same as taking responsibility for what you allow.””

He nodded, but his eyes were wet.

“I don't know how to fix this.””

“Start by telling the truth.””

He looked at Helen, then back at me.

“There are things I haven't told you.””

My pulse quickened.

“What things?””

He took a breath.

“Vanessa didn't start asking about your finances because of this vacation.””

I held his gaze.

“When did it start?””

He hesitated.

“Last winter. After you helped us with the house.””

I felt the floor shift beneath my feet.

“What happened last winter?””

Daniel looked toward the elevator, as though he expected his wife to reappear.

Then he lowered his voice.

“She found a letter in my desk. It was from the bank. We were in trouble, Mom. Much more trouble than I told you.””

“What kind of trouble?””

He swallowed.

“Vanessa thought the only way to save our house was to get access to your money.””

Helen stepped closer.

“Daniel, I strongly recommend that you speak with us privately before discussing anything further.””

He nodded.

But before he could continue, his phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

All the color drained from his face.

“What's wrong?”” I asked.

He held the phone out to me.

It was a message from Vanessa.

If you tell your mother what we did with the money she gave us, you'll destroy both our lives.

I read it twice.

Then I looked at my son.

“What money, Daniel?””

May you like

He shut his eyes.

And when he opened them again, I saw the shame he'd been trying to hide since the moment he arrived at Serenity Cove.
