Chapter 14: The Last Witness
The courtroom was packed the following morning.
Reporters occupied the back rows.
Two television crews waited outside.
Devon's legal team sat at the front, surrounded by expensive suits and thick folders.
Robert Keller wasn't present.
His doctors had declared him too ill to attend.
But his lawyers had brought a signed statement claiming that my father's trust was fraudulent and that Devon was entitled to half of the original investment.
I sat beside Rebecca.
My mother was behind us.
Tiana sat on the opposite side of the aisle.
She had barely spoken since arriving.
The judge entered.
Everyone stood.
"Please be seated.""
Devon's lead attorney, Martin Shaw, rose immediately.
"Your Honor, this matter concerns an unlawful transfer of assets that were originally intended to benefit the Hayes family.""
Rebecca whispered, "Here we go.""
Shaw continued.
"My client, Devon Hayes, is the biological son of Robert Reed. He was deliberately excluded from an inheritance that should have been shared equally.""
I watched Devon.
He wore a black suit and carried himself like a man who had already won.
Shaw placed the original agreement before the judge.
"Furthermore, we have reason to believe that the trust was established to conceal assets from legitimate beneficiaries.""
The judge examined the document.
"Do you have evidence of that?""
"Yes, Your Honor.""
He produced a sworn statement from Robert Keller.
I glanced at Rebecca.
She shook her head.
It was time.
She stood.
"Your Honor, we request permission to introduce the original trust agreement, accompanied by independent forensic verification.""
The judge nodded.
"Proceed.""
Rebecca handed the documents to the court clerk.
She explained the ownership structure, the original investment, and the unauthorized transfers.
Then she presented the digital records showing that Devon had used my credentials to move company funds.
Shaw objected.
"These records have not been authenticated.""
Rebecca remained calm.
"They were obtained directly from the financial institutions and verified by independent forensic accountants.""
The judge reviewed them.
Then he looked toward Devon.
"Mr. Hayes, did you authorize these transactions?""
Devon stood.
"I authorized legitimate company expenses.""
"Did you receive any personal financial benefit?""
"No.""
Rebecca placed another document before the judge.
It showed a transfer of $875,000 into a private account held by Hayes Strategic Advisory.
The account was registered to Devon.
He looked at his attorney.
For the first time, his confidence began to crack.
The judge called for a short recess.
Outside the courtroom, Devon approached me.
"Enjoying yourself?""
I looked at him.
"Not particularly.""
He smiled.
"You think this makes you the good brother?""
"I think stealing eleven million dollars makes you a criminal.""
His smile disappeared.
"You don't know anything about what Dad promised me.""
I stared at him.
"He gave you an education. He supported you. He gave you opportunities.""
"He gave you everything else.""
"He gave me responsibility.""
"He gave you the company!""
"Because I built it.""
Devon stepped closer.
"You think I wanted to spend my life watching you become the son he chose?""
I studied his face.
"You could have told me.""
"And let you feel sorry for me?""
"No. I could have given you a chance to be my brother.""
He laughed.
"You're still trying to buy your way out of this.""
I shook my head.
"No, Devon. I'm trying to understand why you chose to destroy everyone around you instead of building something of your own.""
His expression hardened.
Then he whispered:
"Because you were never supposed to get the inheritance.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
He leaned closer.
"Ask your mother what your father promised me the night he died.""
Before I could respond, his lawyer called him back.
When the hearing resumed, Rebecca introduced the audio recording.
The courtroom became silent.
The recording began with the sound of a door closing.
Then my father's voice.
"Robert, this ends tonight.""
Robert answered.
"You've said that before.""
"I have the documents.""
"Give them to me.""
"No.""
A chair scraped against the floor.
Then another voice appeared.
A woman's voice.
I recognized it immediately.
My mother.
"Please. Both of you. Stop this.""
My father's voice softened.
"Margaret, go home.""
Then Robert said:
"You still haven't told him, have you?""
My father answered.
"There's nothing to tell.""
Robert laughed.
"Then perhaps I should tell him myself.""
A pause.
Then a third voice.
Devon's.
"You promised me.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
The recording continued.
My father spoke.
"I promised you an opportunity. Not the company.""
"You promised I'd have a place.""
"You had a place. You chose to steal.""
Then Devon said something that silenced the entire courtroom.
"If you won't give me what I deserve, nobody gets anything.""
A loud crash followed.
Then a gunshot.
The recording stopped.
My mother began crying.
Devon stood abruptly.
"That's been manipulated!""
The judge struck his desk.
"Mr. Hayes, sit down.""
But Devon wasn't listening.
He looked directly at me.
"You have no idea what your father did!""
I stood.
"Then tell everyone.""
Devon's face twisted.
"He promised me half the inheritance!""
The courtroom erupted in whispers.
Rebecca stood.
"Your Honor, the defendant has just acknowledged the existence of an inheritance arrangement.""
Shaw quickly pulled Devon back into his seat.
But the damage was done.
The judge ordered everyone to remain silent.
Then he turned toward my mother.
"Mrs. Reed, do you wish to testify regarding the events in this recording?""
My mother stood slowly.
"Yes, Your Honor.""
She walked toward the witness stand.
Her hands were shaking.
She took the oath.
Then the judge asked:
"Did you witness the events described in this recording?""
"Yes.""
"Did you see who fired the weapon?""
My mother looked toward Devon.
Then she looked at me.
"Yes.""
The courtroom became completely silent.
"Who fired the weapon?""
My mother closed her eyes.
"Devon Hayes.""
Devon jumped to his feet.
"She's lying!""
The judge ordered security to intervene.
My mother continued.
"Robert Keller had left the room. My husband was standing near the desk. Devon entered through the side door.""
She began crying.
"He demanded that Robert Reed sign the transfer papers. When my husband refused, Devon pulled out a gun.""
I felt my hands trembling.
"Why didn't you tell the police?"" the judge asked.
"Because Devon threatened to kill my son if I spoke.""
She looked directly at Devon.
"He told me Marcus would die the same way his father did.""
The courtroom fell silent.
Then the judge ordered the recording and testimony entered into evidence.
Devon was escorted out for questioning.
But the hearing wasn't over.
Rebecca stood again.
"Your Honor, we have one final witness.""
The courtroom doors opened.
An elderly man entered, supported by a walking frame.
I recognized him from the hospital photograph.
Robert Keller.
His face was pale.
His breathing was shallow.
But he was alive.
His lawyer immediately objected.
"Your Honor, my client is medically unfit to testify.""
Robert raised one hand.
"Let me speak.""
He was helped into the witness chair.
The judge looked at him.
"Mr. Keller, do you understand that you are under oath?""
Robert nodded.
Then he looked at me.
"Marcus, I owe you the truth.""
I said nothing.
He continued.
"Devon didn't act alone.""
My stomach tightened.
"Who helped him?""
Robert looked toward the back of the courtroom.
At Tiana.
Then he looked at my mother.
And finally, he said:
"Your father was killed because he discovered that the person behind the entire operation was not me.""
I leaned forward.
"Who?""
Robert closed his eyes.
Then he spoke the name.
"Linda Parker.""
I stared at him.
"Linda is dead.""
Robert gave a weak smile.
"That's what everyone was supposed to believe.""
The courtroom doors opened again.
A woman walked in.
Older.
Her hair was short and silver.
She carried a leather folder.
I recognized her immediately.
The woman in my father's photograph.
The woman who had supposedly died two years earlier.
Linda Parker.
She looked at me.
May you like
Then she said:
"I'm sorry, Marcus. Your father trusted me, and I betrayed him.""
