The Woman Who Saved the King / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5: The Truth Behind the Bruises

Darius did not leave the room.

That was the first thing I noticed.

A man like him had a hundred ways to escape uncomfortable moments. He could walk away. Make a phone call. Send someone else to handle the problem.

But he stayed.

He stood there looking at me like the bruises on my body had wounded him more deeply than any enemy ever could.

“Rachel,” he said quietly, “look at me.””

I didn’t.

Because if I looked at him, I was afraid I would believe him.

And believing him felt dangerous.

“I know what you’re thinking,” he continued.

“No, you don’t.””

His face tightened.

“You think I’m ashamed of you.””

The words hit harder because they were true.

I finally looked at him.

“Aren’t you?””

His expression broke.

Not completely.

Darius King was too controlled for that.

But enough.

Enough for me to see pain.

“Never.””

“Then why did you pull away?””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

And for the first time since I met him, I saw Darius King without an answer.

“I thought…” He stopped.

Then he looked down.

“I thought if I loved you less, I could protect you.””

I stared at him.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I know.””

His voice was rough.

“When my father died, I was twenty-two. I thought being strong meant never letting anyone become a weakness.””

He walked toward the window.

“I built everything around control. Security. Distance. Rules.””

His shoulders lowered.

“Then you came along.””

I said nothing.

“You walked into a room full of people who feared me and told me my company was being used to hurt innocent people.””

A small, sad smile touched his face.

“You were never afraid of me.””

“That’s not true.””

He looked back.

“You were.””

I nodded.

“I was.””

“But you still stood there.””

That was the thing about Darius.

He remembered my courage better than I did.

“I saw what happened to people around me when they became connected to me,” he said.

“Friends. Employees. Family.””

His voice dropped.

“And now you.””

My anger softened, but it didn’t disappear.

“Darius, you don’t get to decide what happens to me because you’re scared.””

He closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“You don’t get to push me away and call it protection.””

“I know.””

“You made me think you didn’t want me anymore.””

The silence afterward was painful.

Because he had no defense.

Only regret.

“I’m sorry.””

Two words.

Simple.

But coming from him, they carried weight.

Darius King was not a man who apologized easily.

Not because he was arrogant.

Because he had built a life where admitting fault felt like handing someone a weapon.

But he gave me that weapon anyway.

“I never looked at your body and saw something wrong,” he said.

My throat tightened.

“I looked at you and saw the woman carrying my child.””

He stepped closer.

“But every time I touched you, I imagined losing you.””

I swallowed.

“You should have told me.””

“I should have.””

His voice broke slightly.

“I should have trusted you with my fear.””

For a long moment, neither of us moved.

Then his eyes went back to the bruises.

“Who put those marks on you?””

I hesitated.

“Celeste.””

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Something colder.

“Celeste?””

“She said your family hired her.””

Darius immediately shook his head.

“No.””

The certainty in his voice made me pause.

“What?””

“I never hired anyone to change your body.””

My stomach dropped.

“Then who did?””

That was when the room changed.

Because we both realized the same thing.

Someone had used his name.

Someone had used the distance between us.

Someone wanted me to believe Darius was the enemy.

Within an hour, Darius had his security team reviewing every message, every contract, every person who had entered our home.

I hated how quickly everything moved around him.

But I also hated that this time, I needed it.

His head of security, Marcus, arrived with a tablet.

“Sir.””

Darius looked up.

“What did you find?””

Marcus hesitated.

That alone told me it was serious.

“Celeste Harper was not hired through the family office.””

Darius’s eyes narrowed.

“Then who approved her?””

Marcus turned the tablet around.

The answer appeared.

A third-party event company.

One connected to another company.

And that company led back to one name.

Victor Thorne.

My blood ran cold.

“The medical devices,” I whispered.

Darius looked at me.

“Yes.””

Thorne.

The man who had been trying to destroy him.

The man who had nearly killed Naomi.

The man who wanted Darius to lose everything.

“He knew about us,” I said.

“He knew enough.””

Marcus continued.

“Celeste has been communicating with someone inside Thorne’s organization for months.””

Darius’s jaw tightened.

“Find her.””

But I grabbed his arm.

“Wait.””

He looked at me.

“We can’t just scare her away.””

His eyes studied my face.

“She hurt you.””

“Yes.””

My voice was steady.

“But hurting her won’t expose the entire operation.””

A strange expression crossed his face.

Pride.

Even now.

Even angry.

He was proud of me.

“We need evidence,” I said.

Darius nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

And that was the moment I realized something had changed.

Before, he protected me by standing in front of me.

Now he was standing beside me.

The next few days became a careful game.

Darius pretended everything was normal.

I pretended I believed him.

Celeste returned messages.

She thought she was safe.

She thought the distance between Darius and me still existed.

She didn’t know we were watching.

We discovered that Thorne’s plan was bigger than fake equipment.

He wasn’t just trying to damage King Global Transport.

He wanted to take control of Darius’s entire business network.

The fake devices would create lawsuits.

The lawsuits would destroy contracts.

The scandal would lower the company’s value.

Then Thorne would buy what remained.

A billion-dollar empire stolen through fear.

And I almost admired the strategy.

Almost.

Because it used the same thing every dangerous person used.

People’s trust.

The night before the gala’s final event, Darius found me in the kitchen.

I was drinking tea and reading medical reports.

“You should rest.””

I looked up.

“You sound like a husband.””

A small smile appeared.

“I am one.””

The words surprised both of us.

Because they no longer sounded like a contract.

They sounded true.

He came closer.

“Rachel.””

I looked at him.

“I don’t know how to do this perfectly.””

“Do what?””

“Love you.””

My breath caught.

Darius King.

The man everyone feared.

The man who could negotiate billion-dollar deals without blinking.

Was standing in my kitchen admitting he didn’t know how to love.

“I’m learning,” he said.

I smiled softly.

“So am I.””

He reached for my hand.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Giving me every chance to pull away.

I didn’t.

And for the first time in weeks, the space between us disappeared.

May you like

But outside our home, Victor Thorne was preparing for his final move.

And he had no idea the woman he underestimated was about to bring his entire empire down.
