Chapter 8: The Brother Vincent Never Knew

I read the message so many times that the words stopped looking real.

*You are Vincent’s brother.*

My fingers went numb around the phone.

The screen blurred.

For a moment, I thought my mind was playing tricks on me.

Because there was no way.

No possible way.

The man standing beside me—the man whose name made criminals disappear and businessmen tremble—was my brother.

Not a stranger.

Not an ally.

Not someone connected to my family through a forgotten secret.

My brother.

Vincent stared at the photograph in my hand.

He didn’t move.

He didn’t speak.

The hallway around us continued.

Doctors walked past.

Machines beeped behind the hospital doors.

People lived ordinary lives ten feet away from the moment our entire world changed.

Finally, Vincent whispered:

“Let me see it.””

I handed him the phone.

His hands were steady.

But his face was not.

He looked at the picture again.

Elena.

Rosa.

The baby.

Him.

Us.

His eyes stayed on the image for a long time.

Then he looked at Antonio.

“Did you know?””

Antonio looked away.

That was all the answer Vincent needed.

His expression hardened.

“You knew.””

“I suspected.””

“You knew.””

Antonio swallowed.

“I didn’t know for certain.””

Vincent stepped closer.

“You spent twenty-five years knowing my mother had another child.””

“No.””

Antonio’s voice became heavier.

“I spent twenty-five years knowing your mother had a child she loved more than anything.””

The words hurt.

I didn’t know why.

Maybe because I had spent my whole life believing I had lost my family.

Now I was discovering I had one.

And that family had lost me too.

Vincent looked back at me.

“You were the reason she left.””

The sentence sounded like an accusation.

But his eyes told a different story.

Pain.

Not blame.

I shook my head.

“I didn’t know.””

“I know.””

His voice was quiet.

“You were a baby.””

I looked down.

“Then why didn’t she tell you?””

Vincent looked at the photograph.

“Because someone stopped her.””

Antonio spoke.

“Your grandfather.””

Vincent’s jaw tightened.

“The old man.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Antonio sighed.

“Because he believed Matteo’s blood and Elena’s blood together created a weakness.””

I felt sick.

“A baby was a weakness?””

“To him.””

Antonio looked at me.

“To him, family was not about love.””

A pause.

“It was about control.””

Vincent turned away.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then he asked the question that seemed impossible for him to say.

“Does my mother know?””

Antonio’s silence answered.

Vincent closed his eyes.

“She knew.””

“Yes.””

“And she let me believe she abandoned me.””

“She had no choice.””

Vincent laughed quietly.

It wasn’t happiness.

It was pain.

“No choice.””

He repeated the words.

“Everyone always says that.””

He looked at me.

“She had no choice.””

A pause.

“He had no choice.””

Another pause.

“You had no choice.””

His voice became bitter.

“But somehow I was the only one left carrying the consequences.””

I understood that anger.

Because I felt it too.

My whole life, I had carried questions without knowing their names.

Why did my grandmother refuse to talk about my parents?

Why did she look afraid when certain people were mentioned?

Why did I feel like there was a missing piece of my life?

The answer was standing in front of me.

And he looked just as lost.

A nurse suddenly appeared.

“Mr. Moretti?””

Vincent turned.

“Yes?””

“The patient is awake again.””

Everyone became still.

Gabriel.

The man who knew everything.

Vincent walked back toward the room.

This time, I followed without hesitation.

Inside, Gabriel looked at us.

His eyes moved between me and Vincent.

A sad smile appeared.

“You know now.””

Vincent stood beside the bed.

“You knew.””

Gabriel nodded.

“Yes.””

“You knew Luca was my brother.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Gabriel looked exhausted.

“Because Elena asked me not to.””

Vincent froze.

“My mother?””

“She was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Gabriel looked at me.

“Of what would happen if the Moretti family knew the child survived.””

Vincent frowned.

“But I was her son.””

Gabriel’s eyes softened.

“You were a child.””

The answer hurt.

Because it was true.

“You couldn’t protect him.””

Vincent looked away.

Gabriel continued.

“Your father controlled everyone around him. Even Elena.””

“My father was dead by then.””

“His influence wasn’t.””

Silence.

Then I stepped closer.

“Why did Rosa raise me?””

Gabriel looked at me.

“Because she loved you.””

“That’s not the whole answer.””

“No.””

He closed his eyes.

“She loved Elena too.””

My chest tightened.

“What happened to my mother?””

Gabriel didn’t answer immediately.

That frightened me.

Because every person who knew the truth hesitated before saying it.

Finally, he said:

“Your mother died.””

The words hurt.

Even though I had never known her.

Even though I had spent years believing she was already gone.

Something inside me still broke.

“How?””

Gabriel looked at Vincent.

“Because she tried to save you.””

Vincent’s expression changed.

“From who?””

Gabriel looked toward the door.

“From Gabriel Bellandi.””

I froze.

“Wait.””

The old man’s eyes filled with regret.

“I know what you think.””

I stared at him.

“You were the enemy.””

“Yes.””

“Then why help us?””

Gabriel looked down.

“Because I was the reason everything happened.””

The room became silent.

Vincent stepped closer.

“What did you do?””

Gabriel’s breathing became slower.

“I was jealous.””

Nobody expected that answer.

“I was the older son. I was supposed to inherit everything.””

His eyes closed.

“But Elena was loved more.””

He swallowed.

“And Matteo was better than me.””

Antonio stood at the doorway.

Listening.

Gabriel continued.

“I spent years believing I deserved what they had.””

His voice cracked.

“Power. Respect. Love.””

A bitter smile appeared.

“I destroyed everything because I wanted to prove I was stronger.””

Vincent’s face was cold.

“You took my mother.””

“Yes.””

“You took Luca’s father.””

“Yes.””

“You ruined both families.””

Gabriel nodded.

“Yes.””

I expected anger from Vincent.

Maybe violence.

Instead, he asked:

“Why are you telling us now?””

Gabriel looked at him.

“Because I am dying.””

The room went quiet.

“And because there is one more thing you need to know.””

He reached under the blanket.

Slowly.

Painfully.

He pulled out a small object.

A silver key.

I stared.

The same kind of old silver that belonged to the charm.

Gabriel held it toward me.

“This belonged to Elena.””

I didn’t take it.

“What does it open?””

His eyes moved between me and Vincent.

“A place where she left the truth.””

Vincent took a step forward.

“Where?””

Gabriel looked at him.

“Not for you.””

The words shocked him.

“What?””

Gabriel looked at me.

“For Luca.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Why?””

“Because Elena knew Vincent would spend his life trying to fix the past.””

He looked at Vincent.

“And she knew he would destroy himself doing it.””

Vincent said nothing.

Gabriel continued.

“She wanted Luca to choose.””

“Choose what?””

The old man looked at me.

“Whether he wanted to know the truth.””

I looked at the key.

Then at Vincent.

Then back at Gabriel.

“What truth?””

Gabriel’s eyes filled with sadness.

“The truth about who your real father was.””

My blood went cold.

“What?””

Vincent looked confused.

“Matteo wasn’t his father.””

Gabriel shook his head.

“No.””

A silence.

“Matteo was the man who saved him.””

The room seemed to tilt.

I couldn’t speak.

Gabriel whispered:

“Your biological father was the one person Elena trusted enough to hide you from the world.””

I looked at Vincent.

He looked as confused as I felt.

“Who?””

Gabriel closed his eyes.

For a moment, I thought he wouldn’t answer.

Then he whispered:

“Your father’s name…”

The machines beside him began beeping.

Doctors rushed in.

The room exploded into movement.

But before they pushed us away, Gabriel forced out the final words.

Words that followed me into the hallway.

Words that changed the meaning of everything.

“Your father…”

He looked at Vincent.

“Was your enemy.””

The door closed.

I stood outside.

The silver key in my hand.

My brother beside me.

And a question I was terrified to ask.

May you like

If Vincent Moretti was my brother…

Then who was the man who gave me my name?
