Chapter 12: The Grandmother Who Paid for Our Silence
The room became unbearably quiet.
Richard sat down slowly.
“My mother died fifteen years ago.””
Elizabeth shook her head.
“No. Her funeral was a performance.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Are you saying Evelyn Carter is alive?””
Elizabeth nodded.
“She has been living under another name in Switzerland.””
Richard looked at the notebook.
“That can't be true.””
“Your mother arranged your father's murder. She helped Thomas steal the children. She paid Alexander to falsify medical records.””
I looked at Elizabeth.
“Why would she do that?””
Elizabeth held my hand.
“Because your grandfather intended to give the entire Carter empire to his grandchildren.””
Michael frowned.
“But Thomas was his son.””
“He was his son, but he had already stolen millions from the company. Your grandfather discovered it. He planned to remove Thomas from the board.””
Richard looked devastated.
“And my mother?””
“She believed Thomas deserved the inheritance more than his children.””
Elizabeth paused.
“Especially you.””
I frowned.
“Why me?””
Elizabeth looked toward Richard.
“Because you were the child she believed would eventually expose everything.””
Richard shook his head.
“Why would she hate her own granddaughter?””
Elizabeth's expression softened.
“Because she believed you were the reason your father abandoned the family.””
I looked at Richard.
He lowered his eyes.
Elizabeth continued.
“Evelyn wanted the Carter name to remain under her control. She believed that if all three children disappeared, Thomas would inherit the company and she could control him.””
Daniel stood.
“Then why did she leave Michael alive?””
Elizabeth looked at him.
“She didn't know where he was. Thomas arranged his adoption without telling her.””
Michael shook his head.
“So she thought all three of us were dead?””
“Yes.””
I looked down at the notebook.
“Then why did she allow Richard to search for me?””
Elizabeth gave a sad smile.
“She didn't. Thomas did.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He wanted you found because he needed your signature to unlock the second trust. But he also needed you to believe Richard was your father so you would trust him.””
The room seemed to tilt.
I remembered Thomas arriving at the estate.
His offer.
His documents.
His insistence that I sign the transfer agreement.
“He wanted me to sign away my inheritance.””
Elizabeth nodded.
“And he would have used your signature to transfer the money before anyone discovered the truth.””
Richard stood abruptly.
“We need to contact the authorities.””
Elizabeth shook her head.
“Not yet.””
“Why?””
“Because Evelyn is still protected by people inside the company. If we expose her without evidence, she will disappear again.””
Daniel opened the notebook.
“What evidence do we need?””
Elizabeth pointed to a page near the back.
“Your grandfather recorded his final meeting with Evelyn. The recording contains her confession.””
Richard frowned.
“Where is it?””
Elizabeth looked at me.
“Inside the silver locket.””
I touched the crescent-shaped locket hanging around my neck.
The one Daniel had given me.
Elizabeth nodded.
“Your mother left it with you.””
I opened it carefully.
Inside the tiny compartment was a small metal memory card.
I stared at it.
“It's been here the whole time?””
“Yes.””
Michael looked at Elizabeth.
“Why didn't you tell us sooner?””
“Because I needed to know that all three children were safe.””
She looked at Daniel and Michael.
“And I needed to know that the person who found you wasn't working for Evelyn.””
Daniel lowered his head.
“I'm sorry, Mother.””
She reached for his hand.
“You were a child. You were manipulated.””
Then she turned toward Richard.
“You, however, were old enough to make your own decisions.””
Richard nodded.
“I know.””
He looked at me.
“And I won't ask you to forgive me.””
I didn't answer.
I wasn't ready.
That evening, we gathered around a laptop in the residence's private meeting room.
Daniel had found a technician who could recover the recording from the memory card.
The screen flickered.
A grainy video appeared.
An older man sat behind a large desk.
My grandfather.
Beside him sat Evelyn Carter.
She wore a pearl necklace and a cream-colored suit.
My grandfather spoke first.
“You have been transferring company money into Thomas's accounts.””
Evelyn smiled.
“Thomas is my son.””
“And Elizabeth is my daughter.””
“Elizabeth is a fool.””
My grandfather slammed a document onto the desk.
“She has discovered the missing funds.””
Evelyn leaned back.
“Then you should have raised her to mind her own business.””
My grandfather stood.
“I am changing the inheritance.””
Evelyn's smile disappeared.
“Don't.””
“Michael, Daniel, and the little girl will inherit everything.””
Evelyn stared at him.
“Then perhaps you shouldn't have had grandchildren.””
The room went silent.
My grandfather stepped toward her.
“What did you say?””
Evelyn looked directly into the camera.
“I said the children will never inherit a penny.””
The video crackled.
Then the door opened.
Thomas entered.
He placed a small glass bottle on the desk.
My grandfather looked at him.
“What is that?””
Thomas smiled.
“Something to help you sleep.””
Evelyn stood.
“Don't make this difficult.””
My grandfather tried to reach for the phone.
Thomas grabbed his wrist.
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Richard was trembling.
“My mother…”
Elizabeth closed her eyes.
“I told you.””
I looked at the black screen.
The recording proved that Thomas and Evelyn had been involved in the scheme.
But it also showed something else.
My grandfather had mentioned the children.
All three of us.
And he had intended to leave everything to us.
Daniel paused the recording at the moment Thomas entered the room.
“Look.””
He enlarged the image.
A reflection appeared in the glass cabinet behind Evelyn.
Someone else was standing in the room.
A woman.
Wearing a hospital uniform.
Michael leaned closer.
“That's Margaret.””
I stared at the screen.
My adoptive mother.
She had been there when my grandfather was murdered.
Elizabeth covered her mouth.
“No.””
Richard stood.
“Margaret Hayes?””
The video continued for another few seconds.
The woman approached the desk and placed a document in front of Evelyn.
Then she handed Thomas a small key.
Daniel paused the image again.
The key had a number engraved on it.
307.
I felt my blood run cold.
Room 307.
The hospital room where we had been born.
The same room where my mother had supposedly died.
I turned toward Elizabeth.
“Did Margaret know about the murder?””
Elizabeth began crying.
“I don't know.””
Richard looked at the screen.
“Why would she have that key?””
Nobody answered.
Then my phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
A message appeared.
*Your mother is telling you only half the truth.*
A second message arrived.
*Ask Elizabeth what happened to the third baby.*
I looked at my mother.
She had gone completely still.
“Mom?””
She didn't answer.
“Is there something else?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
Then she whispered:
“Yes.””
I leaned forward.
“What?””
Elizabeth looked at all three of us.
“Michael wasn't the third child.””
Daniel frowned.
“But the photograph—”
“There were four babies.””
Richard stood abruptly.
“Four?””
Elizabeth nodded.
“Four children were born in Room 307. Three survived.””
My hands began shaking.
“What happened to the fourth?””
Elizabeth closed her eyes.
“Your grandfather took him.””
Michael stared at her.
“Why?””
She looked directly at me.
“Because the fourth baby was the only one who could prove who your real father was.””
A heavy silence followed.
Then Elizabeth delivered the final revelation.
“The fourth child wasn't a boy.””
She took my hand.
“It was your twin sister.””
Before I could respond, someone knocked violently on the meeting room door.
A nurse rushed inside.
“Mrs. Carter, I'm sorry. There's been an emergency.””
Elizabeth stood.
“What happened?””
The nurse looked at me.
Then she whispered:
“Someone has taken your mother’s medical records. And they left a message.””
She handed me a folded piece of paper.
May you like
Three words were written across it.
*BRING US THE GIRL.*
