Chapter 14: The Night the Truth Came Home

I had spent six years imagining what it would feel like to hear Richard's voice again.

In my dreams, it had always brought relief.

On the beach that night, it brought terror.

"Richard?""

He seized my arm and pulled me behind a cluster of palm trees just as a figure emerged from the resort's service entrance.

"Stay down," he whispered.

I could barely see his face.

"What's happening?""

"Someone has been following you since the police station.""

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

The figure crossed the sand carrying a flashlight. Its beam swept over the empty beach, then paused near the place where I had been standing.

Richard pressed a finger to his lips.

We waited.

The person eventually turned toward the marina and disappeared behind the dunes.

When the footsteps faded, Richard led me toward a service road.

"How did you know I was here?"" I asked.

"Daniel called me. He said the resort had lost power and that you were outside.""

"Daniel knew where you were?""

"He knows more than you think.""

I stopped walking.

"Richard, I am done discovering secrets about the people I trust.""

He turned toward me.

"Then let me tell you the whole truth.""

We reached a small maintenance building behind the resort. Richard unlocked the door, led me inside, and switched on a battery-powered lamp.

The room smelled of dust and old paint.

He looked exhausted.

"Patricia has agreed to speak," he said.

"But she believes someone will try to silence her before morning.""

"Who?""

"I suspect the person who falsified the release record.""

"Martin thinks Amber was protecting that person.""

Richard looked away.

"Martin is not always wrong.""

"That's not an answer.""

"No."" He sat on a wooden crate.

"It's an admission that I made a terrible mistake when I trusted him to manage the aftermath of my disappearance.""

I folded my arms.

"Tell me about Room 714.""

Richard drew a long breath.

"Six years ago, Northstar's internal auditors discovered that several accounts had been used to move money into shell companies. The transfers were small at first. Then someone began preparing a much larger transaction involving the voting rights attached to the family holdings.""

"The transaction Amber tried to complete.""

"Yes. But Amber wasn't the person who designed it.""

"Who was?""

"I didn't know at the time. I suspected a senior employee, possibly someone with access to the hospital records and our legal documents.""

"Why the hospital?""

"Because I had been admitted under my real name. If the people behind the scheme discovered that I was investigating them, they could have tried to kill me or use my medical condition to force control of the company.""

I sat opposite him.

"And you decided the best solution was to disappear without telling your wife?""

He closed his eyes.

"When you put it that way, it sounds unforgivable.""

"It was unforgivable.""

"I know.""

The simplicity of his answer silenced me.

He continued.

"I had a serious complication after surgery. For several minutes, the doctors thought I wouldn't survive. When I regained consciousness, Martin told me the auditors had found evidence that someone inside the family had approved the transfers.""

"Someone inside the family?""

"Yes.""

"Who?""

Richard looked directly at me.

"Mark.""

I felt as though the floor had dropped beneath my feet.

"No.""

"His signature appeared on two authorization forms. I believed someone had tricked him, but I couldn't be certain.""

"Mark told me he never saw those documents.""

"He may have believed that. He had signed several papers Amber gave him without reading them.""

I pressed my hands together.

"Then why did you disappear?""

"Because the signatures were only part of it. Someone had obtained a copy of your identification and prepared a statement claiming that you had approved the transfer. If the documents were accepted, the trust could be stripped of its protections.""

"And you thought faking your death would stop it?""

"I thought a sudden change in the succession would expose the person attempting to take control. I arranged for Patricia to preserve the medical records and for Martin to secure the trust documents. I planned to return within weeks.""

"But the death certificate was issued.""

Richard nodded.

"Someone changed the plan. By the time I realized what had happened, I had been declared dead, and the person responsible had enough evidence to make my return look like a fraud.""

I stared at him.

"Who was in the room at 11:42?""

"I don't know.""

"Who signed the final release?""

"I don't know that either.""

"Then what do you know?""

He looked at me with an expression I had not seen in years.

Fear.

"I know the person who altered the records had access to my medical file, your identification, and the original trust agreement. I know they could move money through Northstar without triggering immediate alarms. And I know they wanted you to believe Mark had caused my death.""

I thought of the message warning me not to believe Martin when he said the person was dead.

"Richard, who else was involved?""

He hesitated.

Then he said, "My sister Claire.""

I stared at him.

"Claire died before Amber was born.""

"That's what I believed.""

He removed a folded document from his coat.

It was a hospital admission record from six years earlier.

The patient's name was Claire Carter.

The date was the night Richard disappeared.

I read the document twice.

"This says she was admitted to the same hospital.""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because someone had reported that she was involved in the Northstar investigation. Martin arranged for her to be brought in after she suffered a medical emergency.""

I looked up.

"Was she alive?""

Richard's face tightened.

"She was alive when I last saw her.""

"And after that?""

"I was told she had died.""

The words settled between us.

Another person declared dead.

Another missing body.

Another official record that might have been manufactured.

I thought of Amber's confession that she had known her mother was connected to Richard's family. I thought of the mysterious payments and the photograph of Patricia.

"Do you think Claire is the person who falsified your death?""

"I don't know.""

"But she could have been in the hospital that night.""

"Yes.""

I stood and began pacing.

"Then why did nobody tell Amber?""

"Perhaps they did. Perhaps she discovered it herself. Perhaps she believes her mother was betrayed by our family and has been trying to uncover the truth.""

I stopped.

"You're still protecting her.""

"No. I'm refusing to accuse someone without proof.""

I looked at my husband.

For six years, I had believed Richard was dead. Now he was standing in front of me, alive, and I was discovering that even his return could not restore the certainty I had lost.

A knock sounded at the maintenance building door.

Richard went still.

"Who is it?"" he called.

"Daniel.""

He opened the door.

Daniel Hayes stepped inside, breathing hard.

"We have a problem.""

"What happened?"" I asked.

"The security system is back online. Someone used a master access card to enter the old records room.""

Richard's face changed.

"Which records?""

"The archived ownership files. The original trust documents were stored there before the transfer to the safety deposit box.""

"They were supposed to be destroyed," Richard said.

Daniel shook his head.

"They weren't. Someone kept copies.""

"Who had access?""

"Three people: me, Martin, and the former finance director.""

"Name?"" I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

"Thomas Reed.""

The retired security chief.

The man whose name had appeared in the hospital investigation.

Richard swore under his breath.

"Thomas was responsible for the security logs on the night I disappeared.""

Daniel nodded.

"And he just checked into the resort under a false name.""

My phone vibrated.

A message appeared from Detective Bennett.

*Patricia Wells has arrived at the station. She brought a witness.*

I called her immediately.

"Detective, who is the witness?""

Her reply came after several seconds.

"An elderly woman who says she was declared dead six years ago.""

I looked at Richard.

His face had gone completely white.

"Claire," he whispered.

Before I could respond, Daniel's radio crackled.

A guard's voice came through.

"Mr. Hayes, we have a security breach in the west wing. The guest in Room 714 is missing.""

I stared at the radio.

"Room 714?""

Daniel nodded.

"The old hospital wing in the resort's medical archive. It was converted into storage years ago.""

Richard grabbed my hand.

"Ellie, we have to go.""

We hurried through the service corridors toward the west wing.

When we reached the archive, the door stood open.

Inside, filing cabinets had been pulled out and papers scattered across the floor.

A single photograph lay on the desk.

It showed Richard, six years younger, standing beside a woman with dark hair and a familiar smile.

Claire.

On the back, someone had written:

*One of us had to die so the other could live.*

Richard picked up the photograph.

His hands shook.

Then a voice spoke from the doorway.

"You should have stayed dead, Richard.""

A woman stepped into the light.

She looked older, thinner, and scarred by time.

But there was no mistaking her face.

Richard stared at his sister.

"Claire.""

She smiled without warmth.

"Hello, brother.""

May you like

Then she raised a pistol.

"And now," she said, "we're going to finish what we started.""
