Chapter 4: The Boardroom Ambush
The boardroom doors were locked.
That was the first thing I noticed when I returned to the thirty-second floor.
The second was the man standing outside them.
Richard Hale.
He looked as though he'd aged ten years since our phone call. His tie was loose, his shirt collar was damp with sweat, and his hands were trembling.
"Marcus," he whispered.
"You shouldn't be here.""
I held up my phone.
"Four board members have signed a resolution to remove me. Someone has kidnapped my father's assistant. And you're telling me I shouldn't be here?""
Richard glanced toward the security cameras.
"Not so loud.""
"Then start talking.""
He looked down the hallway.
"Come with me.""
He led me into a small conference room and locked the door.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then I placed the photograph of Laura on the table.
"Do you know where she is?""
Richard stared at it.
His face went pale.
"Oh, God.""
"You recognize the room?""
"No.""
"Then why do you look terrified?""
He rubbed both hands over his face.
"Because I know what Vanessa is capable of.""
I leaned forward.
"Did you help her?""
Richard didn't answer.
"Did you help her steal twenty-three million dollars?""
"I approved the payments.""
"Did you know the companies were fake?""
He looked away.
"At first, no.""
"And later?""
His silence was enough.
I stood.
"Get out of my way, Richard.""
"Wait.""
He grabbed my sleeve.
"Your father found out about the offshore accounts. He confronted Vanessa, and she told him the money was being moved temporarily to protect the company from a hostile acquisition.""
"That was a lie.""
"I know that now.""
"You knew it then.""
Richard released my sleeve.
His eyes were wet.
"Your father gave me a choice. Tell the board everything or help him gather evidence. I chose to help him.""
"Then why did he write your name on that photograph?""
Richard looked as if I'd struck him.
"Because I betrayed him.""
I waited.
He reached into his jacket and removed a small brass key.
"Your father gave me this three days before he died. He told me to keep it until you returned.""
I examined it.
A number was engraved on one side.
417.
"What does it open?""
"The old records room beneath the building.""
"Why didn't you tell me earlier?""
"Because Vanessa told me she had copies of the evidence. She said if I spoke, she'd make sure my wife and daughter lost everything.""
I stared at him.
"That's your excuse?""
"No," he whispered.
"It's my shame.""
A sudden knock interrupted us.
Three sharp strikes.
Then Vanessa's voice came through the door.
"Richard? I know you're in there.""
Richard froze.
She knocked again.
"Marcus, we need to discuss your future.""
I walked to the door.
Richard caught my arm.
"Don't let her provoke you.""
I opened it.
Vanessa stood outside with two security officers and four board members.
Her hair was perfectly arranged. Her makeup was flawless.
She carried a leather folder.
"Mr. Carter," she said, "thank you for returning.""
"What do you want?""
She glanced at Richard.
"To resolve this unfortunate situation before it becomes embarrassing for everyone.""
I looked at the folder.
"Is that my resignation?""
"An opportunity for an orderly transition.""
She handed it to me.
Inside was a document stating that I would voluntarily surrender my position as CEO, transfer my voting authority to the board, and accept a substantial severance package.
I laughed.
"You want to buy me out of my father's company?""
Vanessa smiled.
"We're offering you a generous exit.""
"How generous?""
"Fifteen million dollars.""
I closed the folder.
"My father built this company over forty years. You think I'll sell it for fifteen million?""
She tilted her head.
"Your father also made some very questionable financial decisions.""
One of the board members shifted uncomfortably.
I looked directly at her.
"Which decisions?""
Vanessa opened another folder.
Bank transfers.
Approval records.
Digital signatures.
My name appeared on several pages.
The twenty-three-million-dollar transfers.
My signature was at the bottom of every authorization.
"These records show that you approved the payments," she said.
"If this becomes a public matter, the authorities will have questions.""
I studied the documents.
They were convincing.
Almost perfect.
But there was one detail Vanessa had overlooked.
I had been living in London when these transactions supposedly occurred.
My passport records, travel history, and employment records could prove it.
"You've prepared quite a presentation.""
"I prefer being prepared.""
"So do I.""
I removed my phone and photographed every page.
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
"Those are confidential company documents.""
"So are the documents you're using to fabricate a criminal case against me.""
Her jaw tightened.
"Be careful, Marcus.""
"That's what my father used to tell me.""
I stepped closer.
"Tell me something, Vanessa. Why are you so desperate to remove me before the board meeting?""
She held my gaze.
"Because you're damaging this company.""
"Or because you're afraid I'll find what my father hid?""
For the first time, her expression cracked.
Only for a second.
But it was enough.
She turned toward the security officers.
"Escort Mr. Carter from the building.""
The officers hesitated.
One of them, Daniel Brooks, stepped forward.
"Ma'am, Mr. Carter is the legal CEO.""
Vanessa snapped her head toward him.
"You're not paid to question executive instructions.""
Daniel remained still.
"Then perhaps you should give me a written instruction.""
The hallway went silent.
Vanessa stared at him.
Then she turned to me.
"This isn't over.""
"No," I replied.
"It isn't.""
She walked away with the board members.
Richard waited until the hallway was empty.
Then he placed the brass key in my hand.
"Room 417," he whispered.
"Your father left something there.""
"What?""
Richard swallowed.
"The original evidence. And something else.""
"What else?""
He looked toward the elevator.
"His final letter to you.""
I closed my fingers around the key.
Then Richard added something that changed everything.
"Marcus, your father didn't die at home.""
I looked up.
"What?""
"He was found in his study. But the scene was changed before the authorities arrived.""
"Who changed it?""
Richard's eyes filled with tears.
"Vanessa wasn't alone that night.""
"Who was with her?""
He leaned closer.
And whispered a name.
"Your mother.""
May you like
My mother had been dead for eleven years.
At least, that was what my father had told me.
