Chapter 7: The Friend Who Knew Too Much
I read the message again.
Then again.
My fingers felt cold around the phone.
*Ask your mother why her closest friend helped destroy her career.*
The words were designed to hurt.
And they did.
Because there was only one person they could mean.
Dr. Evelyn Hayes.
The woman who had stood beside my mother.
The woman who had helped uncover the truth.
The woman who had told me I deserved answers.
I stared at the photograph.
Daniel Carter outside our apartment.
And beside him…
Dr. Hayes.
I wanted to believe it was fake.
A trick.
A lie.
But the timestamp was clear.
The picture was taken after Daniel left.
After he warned us.
After everything changed.
I walked out of my room.
My mother was in the kitchen making coffee.
She looked up.
“You didn’t sleep.””
Neither did she.
I held up my phone.
“Who took this?””
Her expression changed instantly.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
She knew.
“Jordan…”
“Who took this?””
She looked at the picture.
Then closed her eyes.
That was enough.
“You knew.””
“No.””
“Mom.””
She looked at me.
“I knew something was wrong.””
I placed the phone on the table.
“Is Dr. Hayes working with Daniel?””
My mother didn’t answer.
The silence felt like a confession.
“I need the truth.””
She sat down slowly.
“I don’t know if I have the whole truth.””
“Then tell me what you know.””
For a moment, she looked like she was twenty years younger.
Like she was back in that laboratory.
Like she was remembering the exact moment everything fell apart.
“Evelyn was my best friend.””
“Was?””
My mother looked down.
“When my research was taken, she was the only person I trusted.””
“But?””
“But she was also the only person who knew everything.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What does that mean?””
“She knew where the files were stored. She knew my designs. She knew the backup locations.””
“And Daniel knew?””
My mother nodded.
“Yes.””
I stepped back.
“So she told him.””
My mother looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
“But you think she did.””
A tear formed in her eyes.
“I think someone did.””
I couldn’t stop thinking about the picture.
Not because I trusted Daniel.
I didn’t.
But because he knew exactly what question would hurt us most.
He knew how to divide people.
And the worst part?
It was working.
By noon, Dr. Hayes arrived at our apartment.
My mother almost didn’t open the door.
But she did.
Evelyn stepped inside carrying a folder.
Then she saw my face.
She knew immediately.
“What happened?””
I held up my phone.
Her expression changed.
Not surprise.
Fear.
That was worse.
“You saw this.””
“Yes.””
She looked at my mother.
“Sophia…”
“Tell him.””
The words came quietly.
But they carried years of pain.
Dr. Hayes set the folder down.
“Jordan, it’s not what it looks like.””
I laughed.
“Everyone says that.””
She looked hurt.
“I understand why you don’t trust me.””
“Do you?””
“Yes.””
She took a breath.
“Because I haven’t told you everything.””
My mother crossed her arms.
“Neither have I.””
Dr. Hayes nodded.
“She’s right.””
The room became silent.
“Then start talking.””
Dr. Hayes sat down.
“When Sophia and I worked together, we believed we were creating something that could change the world.””
My mother looked away.
“We were.””
“Yes.””
Dr. Hayes swallowed.
“But we made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“We trusted the wrong people.””
I looked at the picture.
“You trusted Daniel.””
“We both did.””
My mother shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice was sharp.
“I trusted you.””
Dr. Hayes looked down.
The pain on her face seemed real.
But I had learned something.
Real emotions didn’t always mean someone was innocent.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Dr. Hayes opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Emails.
Research notes.
Photos.
“I found out Daniel was secretly filing patents using Sophia’s work.””
My mother looked at her.
“You never told me.””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“Before the fire.””
My mother froze.
“What?””
Dr. Hayes’ voice became softer.
“I went to meet you that night.””
The room went quiet.
“What night?”” I asked.
The night of the laboratory accident.
My mother stared at her.
“You said you couldn’t come.””
“I lied.””
The honesty shocked everyone.
“Why?””
Dr. Hayes looked at the documents.
“Because I had found proof.””
She pushed a paper forward.
A message.
From Daniel.
The date was two days before the fire.
My mother read it.
Her face changed.
“What does it say?””
She handed it to me.
The message was short.
*The project belongs to us now. Sophia will either cooperate or disappear.*
My hands tightened.
“That’s a threat.””
“Yes,” Dr. Hayes said.
“Why didn’t you go to the police?””
Her eyes filled with regret.
“Because I was afraid.””
My mother looked at her.
“You were afraid?””
“Yes.””
“For yourself?””
Dr. Hayes didn’t answer.
That answer hurt.
“Evelyn.””
She looked at my mother.
“I had a daughter.””
Silence.
I had never heard about that.
“She was sick. I needed money. Daniel knew.””
My mother’s expression softened slightly.
Not forgiveness.
Understanding.
“He used her.””
Dr. Hayes nodded.
“He offered to pay for her treatment.””
“And what did he want?””
Dr. Hayes looked at the floor.
“Information.””
The room went quiet.
“What information?””
“Your research.””
My mother stepped back.
“So you gave it to him.””
Dr. Hayes started crying.
“Not all of it.””
“But enough.””
“Yes.””
The word landed heavily.
I looked at my mother.
She looked broken.
Not angry.
Broken.
“You helped him.””
“I know.””
“You helped him destroy everything I built.””
“I know.””
“You helped him make me disappear.””
Dr. Hayes whispered:
“I know.””
Nobody spoke.
Then my mother said something I had never heard before.
“You were my family.””
Dr. Hayes closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“And you betrayed me.””
A tear fell down Dr. Hayes’ face.
“Yes.””
I expected anger.
I expected shouting.
But my mother just stood there.
Quiet.
And somehow, that was worse.
After a few minutes, she walked away.
She went into her room.
Closed the door.
Dr. Hayes looked at me.
“I deserve whatever you think of me.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Because I was angry.
But I also saw someone who had been manipulated.
And I hated that.
Because it made everything more complicated.
“What does Daniel want now?””
Dr. Hayes looked at the table.
“The same thing he wanted twenty years ago.””
“What?””
“Control.””
She opened another file.
“This is why he came after your invention.””
Inside was a company proposal.
A plan.
A new water filtration system.
My design.
But their name was on it.
I felt sick.
“He wants to take it.””
“Yes.””
“Can he?””
Dr. Hayes looked at me.
“Not if we prove you created it independently.””
My mother walked back into the room.
Her eyes were red.
But she was standing straight.
“What’s the next step?””
Dr. Hayes looked at her.
“Sophia…”
“No.””
My mother shook her head.
“I spent twenty years hiding.””
She looked at me.
“I’m done hiding.””
For the first time since all of this started, I saw the woman from the photograph.
The scientist.
The person who had built impossible things.
Not the woman society judged.
Not the woman who worked three jobs.
My mother.
“What do we do?”” I asked.
Dr. Hayes looked at the documents.
“We expose Daniel.””
A sound came from the table.
My mother’s phone.
Everyone froze.
A message.
From Daniel.
She opened it.
It was only one sentence.
*I knew Evelyn would confess eventually. That’s why I kept the original video.*
A second message appeared.
A video file.
My mother pressed play.
The screen showed the old laboratory.
But this time, it wasn’t Daniel.
It wasn’t Dr. Hayes.
It was my mother.
Younger.
Terrified.
Holding something in her hands.
Then a voice behind the camera spoke.
A voice I recognized.
Daniel.
“Tell them whose idea it was.””
My mother in the video looked toward the camera.
And whispered:
“It was mine.””
Daniel laughed.
Then the video ended.
I looked at my mother.
“What did he mean?””
She didn’t answer.
Because she was staring at the screen.
At the one detail none of us had noticed.
In the corner of the video…
was a child’s drawing.
A drawing of a machine.
A drawing I recognized.
Because I had drawn the exact same design last week.
My mother whispered:
“He has been watching you your entire life.””
And then another message appeared.
May you like
*Come to the laboratory if you want the rest of the story.*
*Come alone, Jordan.*
