Chapter 8: The Doctor Who Knew Too Much

Maya stared at the name.

*Dr. Samuel Hayes.*

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The rain tapped against the windows.

The old house creaked.

But inside the room, everything had stopped.

“Say something,” Maya whispered.

Daniel looked at the notebook.

Then at her.

“I don’t know what to say.””

“That’s impossible.””

Her voice became sharper.

“You know everyone in this story.””

Daniel looked hurt.

“I don’t know everything.””

“But you know him.””

“Yes.””

“Who is he?””

Daniel sat down slowly.

“Samuel was the surgeon who treated you after the accident.””

Maya felt a strange emptiness.

The man who had saved her life.

The man whose name appeared on every medical document from her childhood.

The man her mother always described as a hero.

“You’re telling me my doctor was involved?””

Clara looked away.

“We don’t know exactly how.””

Maya turned toward her.

“But you suspected him.””

Clara hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“You did.””

Clara nodded.

“Yes.””

Maya felt anger rising again.

“Everyone knew something.””

Her voice cracked.

“Everyone except me.””

Daniel stood.

“Maya.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I’m tired of hearing that people were protecting me.””

Nobody answered.

“Protecting me from what?””

She looked around the room.

“The truth?””

Dr. Samuel Hayes had been part of Maya’s life for as long as she could remember.

She remembered his gentle voice.

The way he explained her prosthetic leg.

The way he encouraged her during painful therapy sessions.

When Maya was young, she had called him “Doctor Sam.””

He was the person who told her:

“Your body is not your enemy.””

He was the person who taught her not to be ashamed.

And now his name sat inside a notebook connected to the worst secret of her life.

It felt impossible.

But so had everything else.

Maya grabbed her coat.

“I’m going to see him.””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

She looked at him.

“No?””

“It’s dangerous.””

She laughed quietly.

“Dangerous?””

She pointed at the notebook.

“My entire life was built around a dangerous secret.””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Going there alone is not smart.””

“Then come with me.””

A pause.

Daniel nodded.

“Okay.””

Dr. Samuel Hayes’ clinic had not changed.

The same stone building.

The same quiet waiting room.

The same photographs of children smiling after successful treatments.

Maya stood outside the door.

She remembered sitting in that room as a child.

She remembered being scared.

And she remembered Samuel kneeling beside her.

“You’re stronger than you know.””

The memory hurt now.

Because she did not know whether it was real kindness or something else.

Daniel stood beside her.

“You ready?””

Maya looked at the door.

“No.””

Then she opened it anyway.

A receptionist looked up.

“Maya?””

The woman smiled.

“It’s been years.””

Maya forced a small expression.

“Is Dr. Hayes here?””

“He is.””

The receptionist hesitated.

“Should I tell him you’re here?””

Maya looked confused.

“Why wouldn’t you?””

The woman looked nervous.

“He asked me to contact him if you ever came.””

A cold feeling moved through Maya.

“He expected me?””

The receptionist nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel and Maya exchanged a look.

A minute later, the office door opened.

Dr. Samuel Hayes stood there.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Still familiar.

But different.

The moment he saw Maya, his face changed.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“Maya.””

She stepped inside.

“You knew I would come.””

Samuel closed the door.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked at Daniel.

Then back at her.

“Because I knew eventually you would find the notebook.””

Maya’s heart sank.

“You knew about my mother’s notebook?””

Samuel was silent.

That was the answer.

“You knew.””

He sat down.

“I did.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“How long?””

Samuel looked at him.

“Long enough.””

The anger in Daniel’s face was immediate.

“You helped her hide it.””

Samuel looked tired.

“I helped keep her alive.””

Maya froze.

“What does that mean?””

Samuel looked at her.

“It means Richard was not the only person who was dangerous.””

Samuel walked to his desk and opened a drawer.

Inside was a small envelope.

He placed it in front of Maya.

“What is this?””

“Something your mother asked me to keep.””

Maya stared.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

“Because she never wanted you to have it.””

Her expression hardened.

“Why?””

Samuel looked at the envelope.

“Because she believed you would go after the truth before you were ready.””

Maya almost smiled.

“Everyone keeps saying I’m not ready.””

Samuel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at her.

“She was afraid the truth would destroy you.””

Maya picked up the envelope.

“What’s inside?””

“Answers.””

She opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Her mother’s handwriting.

Again.

Maya,

If you are reading this, then Samuel decided you were ready.

Maya stopped.

She looked up.

“You were waiting for permission?””

Samuel nodded.

“I promised your mother.””

Maya continued reading.

There is something I need you to know about the night of the accident.

Your father was not investigating me.

He was investigating Richard.

But he discovered something else.

Her hands trembled.

Richard did not act alone.

Maya looked up.

Samuel’s face was pale.

Daniel went silent.

“What else?”” Maya whispered.

She kept reading.

Someone inside the hospital helped erase the evidence.

The room felt smaller.

Maya looked at Samuel.

“Was it you?””

The question hung between them.

Samuel closed his eyes.

For a long time, he said nothing.

Then:

“Yes.””

Maya felt like the floor disappeared.

Daniel immediately moved closer.

“What did you do?””

Samuel looked broken.

“I changed one document.””

“One document?””

Daniel’s voice was filled with anger.

“One document destroyed the investigation.””

Samuel nodded.

“I know.””

Maya stared.

“Why?””

Samuel looked at her.

And for the first time, she saw something she had never seen before.

Shame.

“Because Richard threatened my family.””

The room became quiet.

“He knew my son had made mistakes. He knew things about my past. He used them against me.””

Maya shook her head.

“So you helped him.””

Samuel lowered his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

“What did you change?””

Samuel opened a file.

“The driver’s identity.””

Maya felt sick.

“You changed who was driving?””

“Yes.””

“From Richard to my mother?””

Samuel nodded.

“I convinced myself I was preventing something worse.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You helped him destroy the truth.””

“I know.””

“You helped him ruin my life.””

“I know.””

Samuel looked at Maya.

“And I have regretted it every day since.””

Maya left the office without saying goodbye.

She walked until the city sounds disappeared.

Daniel followed.

“Maya.””

She kept walking.

“Maya, wait.””

She stopped.

“What?””

Daniel looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

She turned.

“Everyone is sorry.””

Her voice was exhausted.

“But sorry doesn’t give me back fifteen years.””

Daniel nodded.

“No.””

“It doesn’t give me the childhood I lost.””

“No.””

“It doesn’t erase believing my father didn’t want me.””

Daniel looked away.

“No.””

The honesty made her angry.

Because she wanted him to argue.

She wanted someone to tell her everything would be fixed.

But nobody could.

“I don’t know who to trust anymore.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Trust yourself.””

She laughed sadly.

“I trusted everyone else.””

“And they failed you.””

Maya looked at him.

“But you didn’t.””

The words surprised both of them.

Daniel stared.

“What?””

“You failed me too.””

His face fell.

“But you came back.””

A long silence.

“I don’t know if I can forgive you.””

Daniel nodded.

“I understand.””

“But I don’t think I hate you anymore.””

A tear formed in his eyes.

And for the first time since Maya found him, he looked like the father she remembered.

That night, Maya returned home.

She opened the envelope again.

There was one final page hidden behind the letter.

A document.

A legal statement.

Signed by her mother.

Signed by Samuel.

Signed by someone else.

Someone whose signature made Maya freeze.

Because it belonged to Richard.

The statement read:

*I, Richard Carter, acknowledge responsibility for the events leading to the accident involving Maya Carter.*

Maya stared.

Richard had admitted it.

But then she noticed the date.

The statement was signed one week after the accident.

Before her father disappeared.

Before the investigation ended.

Before the official story changed.

Her phone suddenly buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

*You found the confession. Good.*

Another message appeared.

*Now find out why Richard was forced to sign it.*

Maya frowned.

Forced?

Then the final message arrived.

*Your father didn’t disappear to protect you from Richard.*

A pause.

Then:

*He disappeared because he discovered who was controlling Richard.*

Maya slowly lowered the phone.

Because the truth she had been chasing had just become something much bigger.

May you like

And somewhere out there…

Someone above Richard was still hiding.
