Chapter 8: Beneath Saint Mary's

“Elena Vale.””

The child’s voice drifted over the cemetery wall.

Not loud.

Not frightened.

Almost playful.

Elena froze beside Cross’s body.

Marcus crouched behind the concrete barrier, weapon trained toward the gravestones.

“Did you hear that?””

“Yes.””

Margaret stood several yards away, one hand covering her mouth.

“That name…”

Elena looked at her.

“You know it.””

Margaret nodded.

“That was the name your mother gave you before the records were changed.””

Elena swallowed.

“But why is a child saying it?””

Marcus whispered, “Maybe she isn't a child.””

The voice came again.

“Elena Vale.””

A small figure appeared between the headstones.

A girl.

Perhaps eight years old.

She wore a pale coat and held a red balloon.

Elena's blood ran cold.

She knew the girl.

Not from life.

From a photograph.

The photograph on her father's desk.

The one she had seen only once as a child.

There had been a little girl standing beside Daniel Ward.

Elena had always assumed it was herself.

It wasn't.

The girl stopped beneath an oak tree.

She looked directly at Elena.

Then she smiled.

“Your father said you'd come.””

Marcus raised his weapon.

“Who are you?””

The girl ignored him.

She pointed toward the cemetery.

“The door is open now.””

Elena took a step forward.

Margaret grabbed her arm.

“No.””

The girl tilted her head.

“Your aunt always says no.””

Elena looked at Margaret.

“How does she know you?””

Margaret's face had gone pale.

“She shouldn't.””

The girl smiled again.

“She knows me.””

Margaret whispered, “Mara.””

The girl's smile disappeared.

“You remember.””

Elena stared.

“Who is Mara?””

Margaret didn't answer.

The little girl did.

“My name is Mara Vale.””

Elena felt the world shift.

“Vale?””

Mara nodded.

“Your father said we were sisters.””

Elena stopped breathing.

Marcus looked at Margaret.

“What?””

Mara pointed at Elena.

“Half-sisters.””

Margaret stepped backward.

“No.””

Mara's eyes filled with tears.

“You promised.””

The voice was no longer playful.

Margaret looked toward Elena.

“I thought she was dead.””

Mara shook her head.

“You left me there.””

Elena's voice cracked.

“Where?””

Mara pointed toward the cemetery.

“Underneath.””

A low rumble rolled through the ground.

Marcus stood.

“What was that?””

Mara smiled.

“The door.””

A section of stone beside an old mausoleum shifted.

Dust spilled down.

A hidden opening appeared beneath it.

Elena stared.

Margaret whispered, “The service bunker.””

Marcus looked at Elena.

“This is exactly what Cross warned us about.””

Elena looked at Mara.

“Who brought you here?””

Mara's expression changed.

“A man who says he's your father.””

Elena felt sick.

“He's not.””

“No.””

Mara shook her head.

“He isn't my father either.””

Marcus crouched beside Cross.

He checked his pulse.

“Dead.””

Elena closed her eyes.

Cross had tried to stop them.

Or warn them.

Perhaps both.

Mara stepped closer.

“Come on.””

Elena didn't move.

“Why?””

“Because you want to know the truth.””

“Yes.””

“Then stop asking people who keep lying.””

The words struck her harder than they should have.

Marcus glanced at Margaret.

“She has a point.””

Margaret looked toward the opening.

“If we go down there, we may not come back.””

Elena answered immediately.

“Then we make sure we come back.””

She stepped toward the mausoleum.

Marcus followed.

Margaret hesitated.

Mara simply walked ahead.

The stairwell descended into darkness.

Elena reached the bottom first.

The air smelled of dust, old paper, and damp stone.

A narrow corridor stretched ahead.

Small lamps flickered along the walls.

Someone had maintained this place.

Recently.

Marcus looked around.

“This isn't abandoned.””

Elena noticed footprints in the dust.

Several sets.

One was small.

Mara's.

Another belonged to boots.

Fresh.

Marcus pointed.

“Someone came through here today.””

Margaret whispered, “Voss.””

“No.””

Elena stared at the footprints.

“Different tread.””

Marcus crouched.

“You're right.””

He stood.

“Whoever it is, they're heavier.””

A door waited at the end of the corridor.

It was marked with a single word.

*VALE.*

Elena's fingers went cold.

She touched the letters.

The door unlocked.

Marcus immediately raised his weapon.

“No.””

Elena looked at him.

“What?””

“It's too easy.””

Mara smiled.

“It wasn't easy before.””

Elena turned.

“What happened before?””

Mara's expression darkened.

“They came for us.””

“Who?””

“The men with no names.””

Marcus exchanged a glance with Elena.

“The unmarked soldiers,” he said.

Mara nodded.

“They wanted the book.””

“What book?””

“The names.””

Elena opened the door.

Inside was a room filled with metal cabinets.

Hundreds of files.

Boxes.

Photographs.

Hard drives.

A long wooden table sat in the center.

And on it was a thick black ledger.

Elena approached slowly.

On the cover were two words.

*NIGHTFALL REGISTER*

Marcus exhaled.

“We found it.””

Margaret shook her head.

“No.””

She pointed to the back wall.

“There are three.””

Elena looked.

Three identical ledgers.

Each sealed.

One was labeled:

*ORIGINAL*

Another:

*TRANSFERRED*

The third:

*ACTIVE*

Elena stared at the last one.

“What does active mean?””

Margaret's voice was barely audible.

“People whose identities are still being used.””

Marcus opened it.

Pages of names.

Dates.

New identities.

Old identities.

Codes.

Some names had been crossed out.

Some were marked in red.

Elena turned pages.

Then stopped.

Her own name was there.

*ELENA VALE*

Beside it was another name.

*EMILY WARD*

Then a third.

*ELENA WARD*

Three identities.

Three lives.

One person.

Elena touched the page.

“I was Emily.””

Margaret nodded.

“Your mother changed it when you were five.””

“Why?””

“Because someone found the first identity.””

Elena kept reading.

Then she saw another name.

*MARGARET VALE*

Status:

*DECEASED — FALSE*

She looked at her aunt.

“You were listed as dead before you disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“Who changed your status?””

Margaret pointed to another line.

Daniel Ward.

Elena looked down the page.

His name appeared beneath hers.

But his status wasn't deceased.

It read:

*ACTIVE — LOCATION UNKNOWN*

Elena's breathing stopped.

“He wasn't listed as dead.””

“No.””

“Then why did everyone tell me he died?””

Margaret said nothing.

A sound came from behind them.

Footsteps.

Marcus spun around.

The door was closed.

“Mara?””

No answer.

He opened the door.

The corridor was empty.

“Elena.””

She looked at the ledger.

A new line had appeared beneath her father's name.

She hadn't noticed it before.

*ACTIVE — LOCATION CONFIRMED*

Her hand trembled.

“Confirmed where?””

Marcus looked at the page.

Then at the wall.

A red light appeared above the door.

A speaker crackled.

Daniel Ward's voice filled the room.

“You finally found it.””

Elena turned toward the speaker.

“You.””

“Yes.””

“Show yourself.””

“I can't.””

“Why?””

“Because the people with you are listening.””

Marcus stepped toward the speaker.

“Who are you really?””

Daniel laughed softly.

“Still asking the wrong question.””

Elena's voice hardened.

“My father's name is in this book.””

“Yes.””

“Alive.””

“Yes.””

“Where is he?””

A pause.

“Close.””

Elena looked around.

Marcus checked the walls.

Margaret whispered, “No.””

The speaker crackled again.

“He has been closer than you think.””

Elena's eyes narrowed.

“Are you Daniel?””

Silence.

Then:

“No.””

Elena's heart dropped.

The voice continued.

“But I knew him.””

“Who are you?””

“I was the man your father asked to protect you.””

Marcus went still.

“The fourth man.””

“Yes.””

Elena looked at Margaret.

“You knew?””

Margaret nodded.

“He disappeared the night your parents died.””

Elena turned toward the speaker.

“Then why have you been pretending to be my father?””

“I needed you to come.””

“Why?””

“Because the only person who can open the final archive is you.””

Marcus looked at the cabinets.

“What archive?””

“The original identity server.””

A hidden panel opened in the wall.

Behind it was a biometric terminal.

Elena stared.

A screen displayed:

*SUBJECT REQUIRED: ELENA VALE*

Below it:

*DNA AUTHENTICATION*

*VOICE AUTHENTICATION*

*MEMORY AUTHENTICATION*

Elena whispered, “Memory?””

The voice answered.

“Your mother built it that way.””

Margaret stepped forward.

“She knew the truth could be stolen.””

“So she hid it inside Elena.””

“Yes.””

Elena looked at her.

“How?””

Margaret's expression broke.

“Your memories.””

The room went silent.

“That's impossible.””

“No.””

Margaret stepped closer.

“When you were nine, your mother used an experimental memory-protection protocol.””

Marcus frowned.

“You mean she erased something?””

“Not erased.””

Margaret looked at Elena.

“Buried.””

Elena felt dizzy.

“The night my parents died…”

“You saw everything.””

“I don't remember.””

“You weren't supposed to.””

The speaker crackled.

“That is why Voss never killed you.””

Elena looked up.

“What?””

“He needs what is inside your memory.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“You are the key.””

A sudden alarm blared.

Red lights flooded the bunker.

Marcus drew his weapon.

“Someone's entering.””

Heavy footsteps echoed above them.

Mara ran into the room.

“They found us.””

Elena grabbed the ledger.

“Who?””

Mara looked at her.

“The man from the ceremony.””

“Elena,” Marcus said, “we need to move.””

A steel door somewhere deeper in the bunker slammed open.

Then another.

Another.

The footsteps came closer.

Elena looked at the biometric terminal.

“How do I unlock it?””

The voice answered.

“Tell it your first memory.””

She stared.

“My first memory?””

“Yes.””

She stepped toward the screen.

A camera activated.

Her reflection appeared.

Then the system spoke.

*STATE YOUR NAME.*

Elena swallowed.

“My name is Elena Ward.””

The screen flashed red.

*IDENTITY REJECTED.*

Her heart hammered.

Margaret whispered, “Try again.””

Elena looked at the old photograph in her hand.

At Mara.

At her aunt.

At the ledger carrying three versions of her life.

She took a breath.

“My name is Elena Vale.””

The screen flickered.

*IDENTITY ACCEPTED.*

The room fell silent.

Then the system asked:

*STATE YOUR FIRST MEMORY.*

Elena closed her eyes.

Rain.

A kitchen.

Her father's boots.

Her mother's hand.

A stranger's voice.

The closet.

The smell of gasoline.

And a face.

She opened her eyes.

“I remember…”

The bunker door exploded inward.

Marcus shoved Elena down.

Gunfire ripped across the room.

Mara screamed.

Margaret grabbed her.

Through the smoke, a man stepped into the doorway.

He wasn't wearing a military uniform.

He wore a black suit.

His face was older now.

But Elena recognized him instantly.

The scar beside his mouth.

The same eyes from the photograph.

Colonel Adrian Voss smiled.

“You finally remembered me.””

And behind him stood the man whose voice had called her Ellie all night.

Her father.

May you like

Not Daniel Ward.

A stranger wearing Daniel's face.
