Chapter 13: The Man Who Had Been Protecting the Wrong Secret
"That's not my signature.""
Richard's voice was barely audible.
He stared at the court application as though someone had placed a weapon in his hands.
Rebecca examined the document.
"Are you absolutely certain?""
Richard nodded.
"I've been signing my name the same way for fifty years. This isn't mine.""
My mother took the application.
"Then someone is impersonating you.""
Richard sat down heavily.
"Or someone has been using my old legal credentials.""
I looked at the bank manager.
"Who submitted this application?""
"According to the records, it was delivered by a representative of Thomas Carter.""
"Can we see the representative?""
The manager shook his head.
"He has already left.""
Rebecca photographed every page.
"We need to notify the court immediately that this application contains a disputed signature. Richard, I also need a statement confirming that you never authorized it.""
Richard nodded.
"I'll give you one.""
My mother turned toward the door.
"Thomas is still downstairs, isn't he?""
The manager hesitated.
"Yes, Mrs. Carter.""
Mom looked at me.
"I want to speak to him.""
Rebecca immediately objected.
"Evelyn, I strongly recommend that we don't confront him without proper preparation.""
"I've spent twelve years wondering why Daniel died with so many unanswered questions. I'm not going to spend another day hiding from his brother.""
She walked out.
I followed.
Thomas stood near the bank's reception desk, wearing a charcoal suit and holding a leather briefcase.
He looked exactly as he had at my wedding.
Confident.
Well-groomed.
Completely unbothered.
When he saw Mom, he smiled.
"Evelyn. I was hoping we'd meet.""
She stopped several feet away.
"Why are you trying to freeze my daughters' inheritance?""
Thomas sighed.
"Because someone needs to protect the estate from further damage.""
"You mean protect yourself.""
His smile disappeared.
"Careful.""
I stepped beside my mother.
"Why did you forge Richard's signature?""
Thomas glanced at me.
"Hello, Nia. I understand you've had a difficult week.""
"Answer the question.""
He adjusted his cufflinks.
"I have no idea what you're talking about.""
Rebecca approached with the disputed document.
"Mr. Carter, this application was filed under Richard Cole's name. He has denied signing it.""
Thomas looked at the document.
"Then perhaps you should ask his office.""
"He is standing right behind me.""
For the first time, Thomas looked uncomfortable.
Richard stepped forward.
"Thomas.""
My uncle's expression changed.
"Richard.""
"I did not authorize this application.""
Thomas gave a small shrug.
"Perhaps you forgot.""
Richard's voice hardened.
"I haven't forgotten anything. Especially what your brother asked me to protect.""
Thomas's eyes narrowed.
For several seconds, neither man spoke.
Then Thomas looked at my mother.
"Daniel is gone, Evelyn. You should stop trying to bring him into every business disagreement.""
Mom's expression became ice-cold.
"Don't you dare speak about my husband.""
Thomas leaned closer.
"You should have stayed out of the business after he died.""
"And you should have stayed away from his daughters.""
He laughed quietly.
"His daughters? One of them married into my family. The other accepted money from us. Your family has been involved in this arrangement from the beginning.""
Brielle stepped forward.
"I didn't know what you were doing.""
Thomas looked at her.
"Didn't you?""
She flinched.
"You told me it was a legitimate investment.""
"It was.""
"Then why did you need my signature?""
Thomas smiled.
"Because you were willing to help.""
Brielle's eyes filled.
I reached for her hand.
Thomas turned back to Mom.
"Let me make something clear. Tomorrow's hearing will determine who controls the trust. If you cooperate, there may still be an opportunity to settle this privately.""
"What do you want?"" Mom asked.
"Control of the three original properties.""
"Absolutely not.""
"Then you leave me no choice.""
He picked up his briefcase.
Before walking away, he looked at me.
"Enjoy your little victory while you can, Nia. Tomorrow, you'll discover that having money doesn't mean having power.""
He left.
My mother watched him disappear through the glass doors.
Then she turned toward Rebecca.
"Find Peter Lawson.""
Rebecca nodded.
"We'll do everything we can.""
That evening, Laura called with an update.
She had located an old contact number for Peter Lawson.
He was living in a small town outside Manchester, England.
And he had agreed to speak with us.
But he had one condition.
He wanted to see the original documents before revealing what he knew.
We arranged a secure video call.
At 9:15 p.m., a gray-haired man appeared on the screen.
He looked tired, but his eyes were sharp.
"Mrs. Carter," he said.
"I wondered when this day would come.""
Mom leaned toward the camera.
"Peter, did Daniel tell you what he discovered?""
"Yes.""
"Did you know about the twelve-million-dollar transfer?""
Peter nodded.
"I've been expecting it for years.""
Rebecca sat forward.
"Can you explain?""
Peter removed a folder from his desk.
"Before Daniel died, he discovered that Thomas and Patricia had created a false ownership structure using the original properties. They intended to transfer the properties into Northbridge Development Group.""
"Why?"" I asked.
"Because Northbridge had investors waiting to purchase them. Once the properties were transferred, Thomas and Patricia would receive substantial payments.""
"And the money in the trust?""
Peter shook his head.
"That was supposed to be the bridge financing.""
Mom looked horrified.
"Daniel knew?""
"He discovered the plan shortly before his death.""
Peter opened his folder.
"He asked me to prepare a report identifying every fraudulent transaction. I completed it. But before I could deliver it, Thomas contacted me.""
"What did he say?""
"He threatened my family.""
Silence filled the room.
Peter continued.
"I left the country. I believed the report would remain safe.""
Rebecca leaned closer.
"Where is it?""
Peter looked directly at me.
"Your father hid a second copy.""
I glanced at the brass key on the desk.
"Where?""
Peter paused.
"Inside the original property registry. There is a concealed compartment behind the first deed certificate.""
My mother looked at Rebecca.
Rebecca immediately opened the folder we had retrieved from the bank.
She examined the first deed.
Then she turned it over.
There was a small handwritten marking near the bottom.
*D.C. — 11/14.*
Peter nodded.
"That's the one.""
Rebecca carefully examined the certificate.
A thin paper layer had been attached to its backing.
She slowly separated it.
A folded document slipped out.
My father's handwriting appeared at the top.
*FINAL AUDIT REPORT — DANIEL CARTER ESTATE.*
Peter leaned toward the camera.
"That's it.""
Mom began crying.
"Daniel, what did you find?""
Rebecca unfolded the report.
Her eyes moved quickly across the pages.
Then she stopped.
"Peter, there's a problem.""
"What?""
"Your report identifies the original source of the fraudulent payments.""
Peter nodded.
"Yes.""
Rebecca looked at my mother.
Then at me.
"The money wasn't first moved by Thomas.""
She turned the page around.
At the bottom was the name of the person who had authorized the original transaction.
*Patricia Whitmore.*
Peter's voice came through the screen.
"She was the person who began the entire scheme.""
I stared at the report.
But one question remained.
"Why did Dad wait so long to expose her?""
Peter looked directly at me.
"Because Daniel discovered something about Patricia that made him question whether the entire dispute was really about money.""
He paused.
Then he said:
"She had been receiving payments from your father's company for years. Not as an investor. Not as a business partner.""
"Then as what?"" I asked.
Peter lowered his voice.
"She was being paid to keep a secret about Ethan.""
The screen went dark.
The call had disconnected.
May you like
And tomorrow morning, we were going to court with the one document that could expose everyone.
But I had a feeling the most painful truth was still waiting for us.
