Chapter 14: The Secret That Destroyed Two Families

Arthur sat beside Margaret's bed for nearly an hour.

He held her hand.

He asked questions.

He showed her photographs.

Sometimes she responded.

Sometimes she simply stared at the garden.

But one thing became increasingly clear.

She remembered Thomas.

And she was afraid of him.

Dr. Carter eventually asked us to step outside.

"Mrs. Bennett needs rest.""

Arthur reluctantly stood.

"Can I come back tomorrow?""

"Of course.""

I followed him into the corridor.

"Arthur, what did she mean when she said Thomas wasn't Edward's son?""

He shook his head.

"I don't know.""

"Could she have been confused?""

"Possibly. But Margaret rarely said things without a reason.""

Michael joined us.

"I've received preliminary confirmation about the photograph.""

He showed us his phone.

The image had been sent from a prepaid number.

However, the original photograph appeared in an archived hospital record connected to Lily Morgan.

"Whoever sent this had access to protected medical documents," Michael explained.

Arthur looked at him.

"Can you trace the source?""

"Not conclusively yet.""

I checked my phone.

Emily had sent another message.

Daniel, I found something in Mom's old papers. You need to come home.

We returned to her house that evening.

Emily was waiting in the living room with a small wooden box.

"I found this behind the wardrobe in Mom's old bedroom.""

Inside were several birth certificates, hospital documents, and a sealed letter.

One document immediately caught my attention.

It was a copy of my birth certificate.

My father's name was listed.

My mother's name was listed.

But the original registration date had been altered.

I frowned.

"Why would someone change this?""

Emily handed me the letter.

It was addressed to my father.

I opened it.

Dear Daniel Senior,

I know you have agreed to protect Margaret's daughter. I also know you have sacrificed more than anyone should have to protect a child who isn't yours.

My hands began to shake.

I continued.

But I cannot keep the truth from you forever. The girl must eventually know who her biological family is.

The letter was signed:

*E. BENNETT.*

Emily looked at me.

"That's Edward Bennett.""

I read the letter again.

It mentioned a hospital, a birth, and an arrangement made eleven years earlier.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

If Margaret survives, tell her that I never intended to abandon the child. Thomas made sure she believed otherwise.

I lowered the paper.

"Thomas made Margaret believe Edward had abandoned the child?""

Emily nodded.

"That's what it says.""

I looked through the remaining documents.

There was a second envelope.

Inside was a photograph of my mother holding a newborn baby.

The baby wore a blue bracelet.

The same bracelet from the photograph.

My breath caught.

"Emily...""

She took the photograph.

For several seconds, she didn't speak.

Then she looked at me.

"Daniel, that's Mom.""

I nodded.

"And that's Lily.""

We stared at the picture.

My father had kept it hidden for eleven years.

Then I noticed something written on the back.

Lily Brooks — temporary family placement.

Emily sat down.

"She lived with us?""

I searched my memory.

There had been a period when our parents had told us a distant relative needed help.

I was sixteen.

Emily was twenty-three.

I remembered a little girl staying in our house for several weeks.

I remembered my mother buying a small bed.

I remembered my father carrying a baby carrier through the kitchen.

But I had never known her name.

"She was in our house," I whispered.

Emily covered her mouth.

"I remember her.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

"Mom told me the baby belonged to a friend who couldn't care for her. I helped feed her. I used to sing to her.""

Emily began crying.

"Daniel, I remember calling her Lily.""

The room seemed to shrink.

My father hadn't merely protected the girl.

He had brought her into our home.

And my mother had helped raise her, even if only briefly.

I called Arthur.

He listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he whispered:

"Margaret wanted to give Lily a safe home.""

"Why didn't she raise her herself?""

"Because someone was threatening her. She believed the child would be safer away from the Bennett family.""

I looked at the documents.

"Arthur, I think my father arranged for Lily to stay with us.""

Arthur was silent.

Then he said, "That would explain why Margaret trusted him.""

The next morning, Michael contacted us.

He had found Lily.

She was living in a small apartment outside the city and working as a medical equipment technician.

We met her at a quiet café.

She arrived wearing a gray sweater and carrying a worn leather handbag.

She looked nervous.

"Are you Daniel Brooks?""

"Yes.""

She studied my face.

Then she looked at Emily.

"I know you.""

Emily stood.

"Lily?""

The young woman nodded.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Emily reached out.

"Can I hug you?""

Lily began crying.

"Please.""

They embraced.

I watched them.

Emily held Lily as though she were the little girl she'd once carried through our childhood home.

When they finally sat down, Lily placed a small envelope on the table.

"Margaret gave me this before she disappeared.""

Arthur, who had joined us, leaned forward.

"What does it say?""

Lily opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

My darling Lily,

If you are reading this, then I have failed to keep my promise to watch you grow up.

Your father loved you, even when he was too frightened to fight for you.

Your uncle wants you to believe that money and power make him untouchable. They don't.

One day, you will learn why your grandfather protected you.

Arthur looked up.

"Grandfather?""

Lily nodded.

"Margaret told me Edward was my biological father. But she said the man who raised me was supposed to be my grandfather.""

Arthur frowned.

"Who?""

Lily looked at me.

Then at Emily.

"Daniel Senior.""

The café went silent.

My father.

He had been Lily's biological grandfather.

Which meant...

Emily's eyes widened.

"She's our sister.""

Lily began crying again.

I looked at her.

For eleven years, I had believed my family was complete.

Now I was sitting across from a young woman who had once lived in our childhood home.

A sister we hadn't known we had.

Arthur gently touched Lily's hand.

"Then you're part of the Bennett family too.""

Lily shook her head.

"No. I'm part of the Brooks family.""

Arthur looked at me.

I nodded.

"She's right.""

For the first time that morning, Lily smiled.

Then she reached into her bag and removed a small digital recorder.

"I also have something else.""

Michael leaned forward.

"What is it?""

"My mother gave this to me before she disappeared. She said it contained the truth about Edward and Thomas.""

I looked at Arthur.

"Is it the original recording?""

Lily shook her head.

"No. This is different.""

She pressed play.

A woman's voice emerged.

Margaret.

"If anything happens to me, the person responsible is not Edward.""

Arthur gripped the table.

Margaret continued.

"Edward is guilty of stealing from the foundation. But Thomas is the one who arranged the disappearance.""

Then another voice entered.

A familiar male voice.

Thomas.

"Mother, you have no idea what you're doing.""

Margaret answered.

"I know exactly what I'm doing, Thomas.""

He laughed.

"Then you should know that the person you think is protecting you has already betrayed you.""

A pause.

Then Thomas said something none of us expected.

"Ask Arthur what he did the night Edward disappeared.""

Arthur went completely still.

The recording ended.

I turned toward him.

"Arthur?""

He didn't look at me.

His eyes were fixed on the table.

Then he whispered:

"I was the one who reported Edward's plane crash.""

Lily frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Arthur's voice broke.

"It means I was the person who identified the wreckage.""

I stared at him.

"Did you know Edward was alive?""

Arthur shook his head.

"No.""

Then he looked at Lily.

"But I know who was on that plane.""

He took a breath.

And the next words changed everything.

"Thomas wasn't just trying to steal the foundation's money.""

May you like

Arthur closed his eyes.

"He was trying to become the only surviving Bennett heir.""
