Chapter 11 - THE PEOPLE WHO WANTED ME SILENT

The parking garage suddenly felt too small.

My father stood beside me.

My mother was unconscious in Daniel's arms.

Gabriel was to my left.

Elise stood behind us.

And across the garage were the people who had spent years hiding the truth from me.

Carmen.

Victor.

And Daniel's father.

I stared at the older man beside Carmen.

My father looked at him.

“Anthony.”

The man smiled.

“Richard.”

I felt Daniel stiffen.

“You know him?”

Daniel looked at me.

“He was my father.”

My heart sank.

I looked at Carmen.

“You married him.”

She smiled.

“Many years ago.”

“And he was Victor.”

“Yes.”

My father stepped forward.

“You should have stayed away from my daughter.”

Victor laughed.

“She was always going to find out.”

My father's expression hardened.

“She wasn't supposed to find out like this.”

Carmen raised her chin.

“You made that impossible when you decided to disappear.”

My father shook his head.

“I disappeared because you tried to kill me.”

Victor smiled.

“You survived.”

“Barely.”

I looked between them.

“What happened twenty-five years ago?”

Nobody answered.

I stepped forward.

“I am done being protected by lies.”

My father looked at me.

“Sofia—”

“No.”

My voice shook.

“But I mean it.”

I pointed at Carmen.

“She attacked me.”

Then at Daniel.

“He stood outside the room.”

Then at Victor.

“You built this entire scheme.”

Then I looked at my father.

“And you lied about being dead.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I know.”

“I want the truth.”

Victor laughed.

“You think the truth will make you feel better?”

“No.”

I stared at him.

“But it will make me free.”

His smile disappeared.

My father nodded.

“Then you deserve to hear it.”

He stepped closer.

“Twenty-five years ago, your biological father, Michael, discovered that Victor was moving illegal money through several companies.”

I looked at my mother.

She was still unconscious.

“Michael confronted him.”

Victor interrupted.

“Michael was a fool.”

“He had evidence,” my father said.

“And he believed the law would protect him.”

“What happened?”

Victor's face hardened.

“He disappeared.”

My father looked at me.

“Michael survived the first attempt on his life.”

I held my breath.

“Then why did everyone say he was dead?”

“Because we needed Victor to believe he was dead.”

I looked at Victor.

He smiled.

“He was dead to you.”

My father continued.

“Michael gave the original ledger to your mother.”

I remembered the note.

The vault.

The bracelet.

“The ledger in the bracelet?”

“Yes.”

I touched the silver band.

Victor's eyes immediately moved toward it.

He knew.

My father noticed.

“So that's why you came.”

Victor smiled.

“Give me the chip.”

I stepped backward.

“No.”

“Your father can't protect you forever.”

“He already protected me.”

Victor looked at Carmen.

She moved forward.

Daniel stepped between us.

“Don't.”

Carmen stared at her son.

“You're still choosing her.”

Daniel's voice was quiet.

“Yes.”

Carmen's expression hardened.

“You have always been weak.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“I was afraid.”

Then he turned toward his mother.

“But I'm not anymore.”

Carmen's face twisted with anger.

“You ruined everything.”

“No,” Daniel said. “You did.”

She stepped toward him.

Victor stopped her.

“Enough.”

He looked at me.

“The chip.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Victor raised his hand.

Several men moved from behind the vehicles.

My father immediately pushed me behind him.

Gabriel moved forward.

The detective shouted:

“Police!”

The men froze.

Officers emerged from the stairwell.

Victor looked around.

For the first time, his confidence disappeared.

The detective held up a warrant.

“Anthony Carter, you are under arrest.”

Victor laughed.

“You have nothing.”

The detective smiled.

“We have enough.”

He held up a tablet.

The screen showed the hotel recording.

Carmen's threats.

Daniel's voice.

The forged documents.

Then another video appeared.

Victor meeting Carmen.

Victor paying the men who had followed us.

Victor discussing my inheritance.

His face went pale.

“You recorded us.”

Elise stepped forward.

“I did.”

Victor stared at her.

“You.”

She nodded.

“I worked for Richard.”

Carmen looked at her.

“You betrayed us.”

“No.”

Elise's voice was calm.

“I stopped betraying myself.”

Police moved toward Victor.

Carmen tried to run.

An officer stopped her.

Daniel watched silently.

Then Carmen turned toward him.

“You're my son.”

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

“Help me.”

He shook his head.

“I can't.”

She looked at him like she had never seen him before.

Then she was taken away.

Victor was handcuffed beside her.

But before he entered the police vehicle, he looked at me.

“You think this is over?”

I didn't answer.

He smiled.

“You don't know what Michael did.”

Then he disappeared into the car.

I turned toward my father.

“What did he mean?”

My father looked troubled.

“There's something I haven't told you.”

“What?”

He looked at the bracelet.

“The ledger doesn't just expose Victor.”

“What does it expose?”

My father took a breath.

“It proves your biological father is still alive.”

I froze.

“Michael?”

“Yes.”

“Where is he?”

My father looked at the hospital entrance.

“He's been watching you.”

My heart stopped.

“Where?”

Before he could answer, my mother's fingers moved.

She opened her eyes.

She whispered:

“Michael.”

May you like

Then she looked directly at me.

“He's coming home.”
