Chapter 13: The Last Person in Emily's Room
I read the anonymous message again.
*He wasn't the last person to see Emily alive.*
Daniel.
The name sat in my mind like a stone.
For four years, he had allowed Robert to control the family business. He had stood beside Vanessa while she humiliated Maya. He had signed documents that helped redirect money from the company.
But recently, he had started giving me information.
Was he trying to make things right?
Or was he simply trying to protect himself?
I looked at James.
"We need to find Daniel.""
"Not alone," he replied.
I turned toward Maya.
"Mrs. Collins, could you keep Maya here with her teacher for a little while? I'm going to make a few calls.""
Maya grabbed my sleeve.
"Are you leaving again?""
I knelt in front of her.
"Just for a little while. I'm going to make sure nobody can hurt you.""
She looked at the photograph of Emily in my hand.
"Is Mommy's secret bad?""
I swallowed.
"No, sweetheart. Mommy was trying to protect you.""
"From Aunt Vanessa?""
"From anyone who wanted to take something that belonged to you.""
Maya considered that.
Then she whispered, "I don't want our family to be like this.""
I pulled her into my arms.
"Neither do I.""
James arranged for a trusted family friend to stay with Maya while we went to Daniel's office.
The building was almost empty when we arrived.
Daniel was sitting alone in his office, staring at a computer screen.
He looked up when we entered.
His face went pale.
"You got the message.""
I closed the door.
"Did you send it?""
"No.""
"Then who did?""
Daniel rubbed his face.
"I don't know.""
"Did you see Emily after your mother entered her hospital room?""
He didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"Daniel, I have the hospital records. I have Emily's letter. I have the original company documents. I know about Northbridge Medical Services.""
His expression changed.
"Where did you get that name?""
"From Ethan Cole.""
Daniel stood abruptly.
"You shouldn't have spoken to him.""
"Why? Because he knows what happened?""
Daniel looked toward the door.
James moved slightly, blocking his path.
"Sit down," I said.
He did.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Daniel opened a drawer and removed a small notebook.
"I was at the hospital that night.""
"I know.""
"But I didn't go into Emily's room.""
"Why not?""
"Because Robert told me she was asleep. He said he needed me to sign something at the nurses' station.""
"What?""
"A medical expense authorization.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Was it for Northbridge?""
Daniel nodded.
"Robert said the hospital needed confirmation that the family account would cover additional treatment.""
"Did you read the document?""
"Not carefully enough.""
He pushed the notebook toward me.
"I wrote down the details afterward because something felt wrong.""
James opened it.
There were dates, amounts, and several names.
One entry was underlined twice.
*10:42 p.m. — Margaret requested access to the medication chart.*
Another entry appeared below it.
*11:18 p.m. — Vanessa entered Emily's room.*
And beneath that:
*11:36 p.m. — Robert instructed staff to prepare discharge paperwork.*
I looked at Daniel.
"Emily wasn't being discharged.""
"I know. I argued with him.""
"What happened?""
"Robert said the paperwork was administrative. He told me Emily's treatment had already been approved elsewhere.""
"Where?""
"Northbridge.""
James looked up.
"Was there a transfer?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Not that I saw. But I heard Robert speaking to someone on the phone. He said the patient would be listed as transferred even if the family arranged private care.""
My blood ran cold.
"Who was the patient?""
Daniel looked at me.
"Emily.""
I gripped the notebook.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
He lowered his head.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of Robert?""
"Of everyone. Vanessa told me that if I spoke, she'd make sure I was blamed for the forged authorization.""
"Was she involved?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Yes.""
The answer came quietly.
"She knew the hospital paperwork was false. She helped Robert obtain the signatures.""
I felt something break inside me.
"And my mother?""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Margaret signed one of the forms. But I don't think she understood what she was signing.""
"That's convenient.""
"I know how it sounds.""
"Then explain it.""
Daniel took a breath.
"Robert told her the form was needed to release funds for Emily's treatment. He said it was a standard family authorization. Margaret signed it.""
"Did she sign the medication order?""
"No. The medication order was entered later under a physician's credentials.""
James leaned forward.
"Do you know whose credentials?""
Daniel nodded.
"Dr. Adrian Bell.""
James wrote down the name.
"Was he Emily's treating physician?""
"Yes. But he wasn't on duty when the order appeared.""
I stared at Daniel.
"Who entered it?""
He opened his notebook to another page.
There was a name.
*Cynthia Moore — Night Administration Supervisor.*
James immediately took a photograph.
"Do you know where she is now?""
"She left the hospital the following year. I heard she moved to another state.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Why are you helping me now?""
He stared at his hands.
"Because Vanessa went too far.""
"What did she do?""
"She went to the school.""
I said nothing.
Daniel continued.
"Robert told her to bring Maya to the house. They wanted to show her a document and convince her that the family needed her signature when she turned ten.""
I felt my stomach twist.
"They wanted to use my daughter.""
Daniel nodded.
"And when Vanessa couldn't get her, Robert told her to destroy the remaining evidence.""
James closed the notebook.
"Where is the evidence?""
Daniel looked at me.
"At the house.""
"Which house?""
"My father's.""
He swallowed.
"There's a locked room behind his private study. That's where he keeps the original financial records and the hospital correspondence.""
I stood.
"Then we're going there.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Marcus, you don't understand. Robert knows you've been talking to people. He's expecting you.""
"Good.""
"He's not going to let you walk out with those documents.""
I leaned toward him.
"Then he can explain that to a judge.""
Daniel looked frightened.
"There's something else.""
I waited.
"Vanessa told Robert that if you found the original hospital records, he'd have to admit what happened to Emily.""
"What does that mean?""
Daniel's voice cracked.
"Because Robert wasn't the one who entered the final medication order.""
I stared at him.
"Who was?""
Daniel looked directly at me.
"Your mother was in the room when it happened. But she wasn't alone.""
He slid a photograph across the desk.
It showed the hospital corridor outside Emily's room.
Two figures stood near the doorway.
One was Margaret.
The other was a woman in a hospital uniform.
I recognized the name from the notebook.
Cynthia Moore.
But what made my blood run cold was the time printed on the photograph.
11:47 p.m.
The same minute the final medication order had been entered.
Daniel whispered:
"Your mother told me she tried to stop them.""
I picked up the photograph.
"Stop who?""
He looked at me with tears in his eyes.
"Robert and Cynthia.""
Then he handed me a second photograph.
It showed the doorway of Emily's room.
And standing inside it, holding Emily's hand, was a man I had trusted for most of my life.
Arthur Bennett.
My grandfather's former attorney.
The man who had helped us uncover the trust.
The man who had promised to protect Maya.
I looked at Daniel.
"Why was Arthur there?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Because Emily asked him to come.""
"Then why didn't he tell me?""
May you like
Daniel's answer was barely audible.
"Because he was the person who signed the final authorization.""
