Chapter 1: Two Thousand a Month

“Two thousand a month—or get out!””

The suitcase hit the stone porch so hard that one wheel snapped sideways.

Nia froze in the doorway.

For one second, nobody moved.

Then the cold October air rushed around her burgundy hoodie, lifting the loose ends of her braids as she stared at the suitcase lying on its side. One of the zippers had split open. A pair of jeans hung halfway out.

Her eyes burned.

“Vanessa,” Nia whispered.

“What are you doing?””

Vanessa stood beneath the bright foyer chandelier in an elegant beige dress, one hand still gripping the brass doorknob.

“I’m giving you a choice,” Vanessa said.

Nia looked past her toward the staircase, the polished hardwood floors, the framed family photographs lining the hallway.

Her home.

Or at least the place she had always believed was home.

“I live here,” Nia said.

Vanessa gave a humorless laugh.

“You’re nineteen. You’re in college. You don’t get to live here for free.””

“I’ve lived here since I was twelve.””

“And now you’re an adult.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

Nia instinctively stepped backward onto the porch.

The door remained open behind Vanessa, revealing the warm golden light of the house.

“Ten minutes,” Vanessa said.

Nia swallowed.

“Ten minutes for what?””

“To pack whatever you think you’re entitled to.””

“My laptop is upstairs.””

“Then get it.””

“My textbooks—”

“Ten minutes, Nia.””

Nia stared at her stepmother.

There was something different about Vanessa tonight.

Not angry in the ordinary way.

Prepared.

Nia's fingers tightened around the sleeve of her hoodie.

“Did Dad agree to this?””

Vanessa’s expression flickered.

Only for a fraction of a second.

Then it hardened again.

“Your father is busy.””

“Did he agree?””

“Stop making this difficult.””

Nia crouched beside the suitcase and tried to pull the broken wheel straight.

Her fingers were shaking too badly.

“Vanessa, I don't have two thousand dollars.””

“Then you have ten minutes.””

“I work part-time.””

“That doesn't concern me.””

“I’m taking eighteen credits.””

“That sounds like a personal problem.””

Nia looked up.

A tear escaped before she could stop it.

Vanessa saw it.

Instead of softening, she pointed toward the street.

“Your little emotional performance isn't going to change anything.””

Nia wiped her cheek with the back of her hand.

“I’m not performing.””

“Then move.””

Nia stood.

Behind Vanessa, somewhere deeper inside the house, came the faint click of the front lock.

Vanessa didn't notice.

Nia did.

A tall figure appeared at the end of the foyer.

Arthur.

Her father.

He was still wearing his dark business suit, broad shoulders filling the hallway. In one hand he carried a thick legal folder.

He didn't look at Nia.

He looked at Vanessa.

The room seemed to shrink.

Vanessa slowly turned.

“Arthur?””

He walked toward them.

Nia's breath caught.

“Dad…”

Arthur stopped directly behind Vanessa.

His voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

“Why is she paying rent in her own house?””

Vanessa's face drained of color.

“What?””

Arthur's eyes never left hers.

“I asked you a question.””

Vanessa released the doorknob.

“You misunderstood.””

“I don't think I did.””

“Arthur, this is between me and Nia.””

“No.””

His answer came instantly.

“It isn't.””

Nia stared at the folder in his hand.

“Dad, what's happening?””

Arthur finally looked at her.

For the first time that night, the hardness in his expression disappeared.

“Nia, come inside.””

Vanessa stepped sideways.

“Arthur—”

“Move, Vanessa.””

Something in his voice made her obey.

Nia slowly stepped back across the threshold.

Arthur placed the folder on the entry table.

Then he opened it.

The first page was covered in official stamps, signatures, and legal language Nia barely understood.

Her eyes moved down the page.

Then stopped.

“Dad…”

Arthur turned the document toward her.

“Read the name.””

Nia's heart began pounding.

She looked again.

There, beneath the property description, was a name she had not expected to see.

Her name.

*Nia Carter.*

Vanessa whispered, “That's impossible.””

Arthur looked at her.

“No.””

He turned another page.

“It isn't.””

And when Nia reached for the deed, Vanessa suddenly took one step backward.

May you like

Then another.

As if the paper itself could expose something she had spent years hiding.
