Chapter 6: The Voice From The Past

The phone kept ringing.

Nobody moved.

The name on the screen felt impossible.

*Robert Carter.*

Evelyn’s father had been dead for thirty years.

She had attended his funeral.

She had watched the coffin disappear into the ground.

She had cried beside the grave while Alexander held her hand and promised they would survive whatever came next.

But now his name was glowing on a phone screen in Alexander Whitmore’s office.

Daniel stared at it.

“This isn’t possible.””

Evelyn couldn’t take her eyes away.

Her lips parted slightly.

“No…”

The ringing continued.

Thomas stepped backward.

“This is a trick.””

Margaret looked terrified.

“No.””

Everyone turned toward her.

The older woman’s face had gone completely pale.

“No one would use that name unless…”

She stopped.

Daniel picked up the phone.

“Unless what?””

Margaret whispered:

“Unless he’s alive.””

The room became silent.

Daniel answered.

For three seconds, nobody heard anything.

Then a voice came through the speaker.

An old voice.

A tired voice.

But familiar.

“Evelyn?””

The world stopped.

The phone slipped slightly in Daniel’s hand.

Evelyn grabbed it.

“Dad?””

A long silence followed.

Then a shaky breath.

“My little girl.””

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Her knees nearly gave out.

“No…”

She pressed the phone closer.

“No, this isn’t real.””

“I know what it sounds like.””

Her tears fell instantly.

“You’re dead.””

The voice on the other end became quiet.

“I let everyone believe that.””

Nobody in the room spoke.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Thirty years of grief.

Thirty years of questions.

Thirty years of believing everyone she loved was gone.

And now her father was speaking to her.

“Where are you?””

A pause.

Then Robert answered:

“Somewhere I should have left a long time ago.””

Daniel took the phone from her carefully.

“Mr. Carter, my name is Daniel Cross. I’m Alexander Whitmore’s attorney.””

“I know who you are.””

Daniel frowned.

“How?””

“Because Alexander trusted you.””

Everyone looked at each other.

The caller knew too much.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Where is Alexander’s killer?””

Another silence.

Then Robert said:

“You’re asking the wrong question.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“The question is not who killed Alexander.””

A pause.

“The question is who wanted Alexander to die.””

Thirty years earlier.

Robert Carter had never trusted the Whitmore family.

Not because they were rich.

Not because they had influence.

Because he understood people.

He had spent his life protecting others.

His security company was small, but his reputation was strong.

People hired him because he noticed things others ignored.

A missing detail.

A strange movement.

A person standing too close.

And when his daughter married Alexander Whitmore, he noticed something immediately.

Thomas.

“You don’t like him,” Evelyn had said one night.

Robert looked up from his newspaper.

“Who?””

“Thomas.””

Her father sighed.

“I don’t dislike him.””

“You just stare at him like he’s a criminal.””

Robert folded the newspaper.

“I watch people.””

“That’s your answer for everything.””

“Because it’s usually the right one.””

Evelyn smiled.

“You’re impossible.””

Robert looked at her.

“You love Alexander.””

She nodded.

“With everything I have.””

“Then protect that.””

She laughed.

“From what?””

Robert didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

Some families didn’t destroy people from the outside.

They destroyed them from within.

Present day.

Daniel listened carefully.

“You disappeared after Evelyn vanished.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Robert’s voice became heavy.

“Because I found out too late.””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“What did you find out?””

The phone was placed on speaker.

Everyone heard.

Robert took a deep breath.

“The night you disappeared, I was supposed to meet Alexander.””

Evelyn froze.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Her voice cracked.

“Protecting me. Saving me. Helping me.””

She looked around the room.

“And everyone still let me lose thirty years.””

Nobody answered.

Because she was right.

Robert continued quietly.

“I found evidence that Thomas and Margaret were involved.””

Thomas looked away.

“But I didn’t know how deep it went.””

Daniel asked:

“What happened next?””

“I followed the money.””

“To Carter Security Solutions?””

“Yes.””

Evelyn looked confused.

“My company?””

Robert sighed.

“That was the problem.””

“What problem?””

“Someone was using my company name.””

Daniel looked at the documents.

“So the company wasn’t involved?””

“No.””

Robert’s voice became firmer.

“It was created as a cover.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

She knew.

Daniel noticed.

“You understand something.””

Margaret looked at him.

“I understand more than I wanted to.””

Evelyn turned toward her.

“What did you know?””

Margaret didn’t answer.

“Margaret.””

The older woman looked at Evelyn.

“I knew Robert discovered the truth.””

“And?””

“And I tried to stop him.””

The confession landed like a stone.

Thomas stared at his mother.

“You knew he was alive?””

Margaret nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“You let me believe he was dead?””

“Yes.””

Thomas looked destroyed.

For the first time, Evelyn saw him not as the powerful brother of a billionaire.

But as a man realizing the entire foundation of his life was built on lies.

Robert continued.

“Margaret contacted me after I found the records.””

Daniel looked up.

“What did she say?””

“She offered me a deal.””

Evelyn’s face hardened.

“A deal?””

Robert’s voice became painful.

“She told me if I stayed silent, Evelyn would live.””

The room froze.

Evelyn whispered:

“What?””

Robert continued.

“She said they had people watching you.””

Her hands began shaking.

“So you disappeared to protect me.””

“Yes.””

“You let me believe you were dead.””

“I thought if the world believed I was gone, they would stop looking for me.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

The pain was too complicated.

Anger.

Love.

Relief.

Betrayal.

All at once.

“Where have you been?””

Robert was quiet.

“Close.””

“Close?””

“Close enough to know Alexander never gave up.””

Evelyn looked toward the coffin.

Her voice broke.

“He looked for me until he died.””

“Yes.””

“Did he know you were alive?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

The answer surprised her.

Robert continued.

“Alexander was powerful. But power creates enemies.””

Daniel looked at the documents.

“And you think someone inside Whitmore Holdings killed him.””

“I know.””

Everyone turned.

Robert’s voice became colder.

“Because Alexander found the same thing I did.””

“What?””

“A hidden account.””

Daniel looked at the folder.

“The money transfers.””

“Yes.””

“And who controlled it?””

A long silence followed.

Then Robert said:

“The person who had access to every part of Alexander’s life.””

Evelyn looked around the room.

Thomas.

Victoria.

Margaret.

The answer was somewhere close.

Too close.

Daniel asked:

“Can you give us a name?””

Robert didn’t answer.

“Mr. Carter?””

Finally, the old man spoke.

But his voice was full of fear.

“I can.””

Everyone waited.

Then Robert said:

“But if I say it, they’ll know I’m still alive.””

Evelyn gripped the phone.

“Dad, tell us.””

Another silence.

Then a sudden sound.

A crash.

Like something falling.

Robert’s breathing changed.

“Wait…”

Daniel stood.

“What happened?””

Robert whispered.

Someone was there.

Someone near him.

Evelyn heard a door opening through the phone.

Then a voice.

A voice that wasn’t Robert’s.

A voice everyone recognized.

A voice that made Margaret turn completely white.

The stranger spoke:

“You should have stayed hidden, Robert.””

Evelyn froze.

Because she knew that voice.

She had heard it thirty years ago.

On the night she disappeared.

The phone dropped.

The call ended.

And on the screen appeared one final message.

*CALLER DISCONNECTED.*

Daniel looked at everyone.

Then quietly said:

“Whoever took your father…”

May you like

He stared at Evelyn.

“…just found him again.””
