Chapter 8: The Last Person Alexander Trusted

The message lay on the dusty archive floor.

Six words.

Six words that felt heavier than any threat Evelyn had ever heard.

*STOP SEARCHING, OR YOUR FATHER DIES.*

Daniel read it again.

Then he looked at the locked door.

“They knew we were here.””

Evelyn didn’t move.

Her eyes remained on the paper.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she was angry.

Thirty years ago, someone had taken her life away.

Now they were trying to take her father too.

“Evelyn.””

She looked at Daniel.

“We’re not stopping.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

He pulled out his phone and called security.

No signal.

He looked at the screen.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“The cameras are offline.””

Evelyn looked around the room.

“So they planned this.””

“Yes.””

A faint sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone wasn’t running away.

Someone wanted them to know they were there.

Daniel moved in front of Evelyn.

The footsteps stopped.

Then a voice came through the door.

“Evelyn?””

She froze.

Because she knew that voice.

Not from thirty years ago.

From the present.

A voice she had heard at Alexander’s funeral.

A voice that had stood beside her while pretending to mourn.

Daniel looked at her.

“Who is it?””

Evelyn whispered:

“Victoria.””

The door opened seconds later.

Victoria Whitmore stood there.

Her perfect appearance was gone.

No expensive makeup.

No carefully controlled expression.

Only exhaustion.

Daniel stepped forward.

“How did you get here?””

Victoria ignored him.

She looked directly at Evelyn.

“I need you to listen to me.””

Evelyn laughed quietly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Victoria swallowed.

“I know.””

“You knew about the letters?””

“No.””

“The investigation?””

“No.””

“Your husband searching for me?””

Victoria looked down.

That answer came too slowly.

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

“You knew.””

Victoria’s voice broke.

“I knew he was unhappy.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Victoria closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The word landed painfully.

“I knew Alexander never stopped looking for you.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Why?””

Victoria looked toward the empty archive room.

“Because I found out after we married.””

Evelyn felt a strange ache.

Victoria wasn’t the enemy she expected.

That almost made it worse.

“You married a man who was still looking for another woman.””

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you stayed?””

A sad smile appeared on Victoria’s face.

“Would you have left?””

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Because she knew the answer was complicated.

Victoria continued.

“I loved him.””

The room became quiet.

“But I knew something was missing.””

She looked at Evelyn.

“You.””

Years earlier.

Victoria first met Alexander at a charity event.

She knew who he was.

Everyone did.

The billionaire.

The genius.

The man who built an empire before turning forty.

But when she spoke with him, she saw something nobody else saw.

A lonely man.

A man surrounded by people but still searching for someone.

She remembered asking:

“Are you happy?””

Alexander smiled politely.

“I have everything.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

He looked away.

And Victoria knew.

He didn’t.

Years later, after their marriage, she discovered why.

A locked drawer.

A hidden photograph.

A name he never said out loud.

Evelyn.

She confronted him.

“Do you still love her?””

Alexander didn’t lie.

“Yes.””

Victoria remembered that moment.

It should have destroyed her.

Instead, it made her understand him.

Because Alexander wasn’t looking for a replacement.

He was waiting for a person who had never stopped being part of him.

Present day.

Victoria looked at Evelyn.

“I didn’t know how to compete with a ghost.””

Evelyn looked away.

“You had a life with him.””

“Yes.””

“But he loved me.””

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.””

There was no anger.

No jealousy.

Just acceptance.

“And I think that’s why someone wanted him gone.””

Daniel frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Victoria looked at him.

“Because Alexander was finally close to finding the truth.””

The room became tense.

“You know something,” Daniel said.

Victoria hesitated.

Then reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this after he died.””

Evelyn stared.

“What is it?””

“Something Alexander hid from me.””

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

A group of people standing outside the Whitmore mansion.

Alexander.

Margaret.

Thomas.

Lydia Vale.

And one more person.

Evelyn looked closer.

Her heart stopped.

“No.””

Daniel noticed.

“What?””

She pointed.

“That man.””

Everyone looked.

An older man standing beside Margaret.

Someone Evelyn had seen before.

But not at the funeral.

Not in Alexander’s life.

From her own past.

“My father knew him.””

Victoria looked surprised.

“Who is he?””

Evelyn whispered:

“Charles Vale.””

Daniel frowned.

“Lydia’s father?””

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“He worked with my father.””

The pieces started moving.

Like a puzzle finally finding its shape.

Daniel turned the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

Alexander’s handwriting.

*The person who connected both families was never Margaret.*

Everyone waited.

Daniel read the next line.

*It was Charles Vale.*

The name changed everything.

Because Charles Vale was supposed to be dead.

Just like Robert.

Just like so many secrets surrounding the Whitmore family.

Daniel searched through the archive files.

Then stopped.

“I found something.””

He pulled out an old folder.

Inside were company records.

Security contracts.

Payment histories.

And one name repeated over and over.

Charles Vale.

“He wasn’t just connected to your father.””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“He worked for Whitmore Holdings.””

Evelyn felt cold.

“How?””

“He was hired as a security consultant.””

“For what?””

Daniel turned the page.

“Private protection.””

Victoria whispered:

“Protection from who?””

Nobody answered.

Because they knew.

From everyone.

A sudden noise came from Daniel’s phone.

A message.

Unknown number.

He opened it.

One picture.

Robert Carter.

Alive.

Sitting in a dark room.

His face bruised.

But conscious.

Evelyn grabbed the phone.

“Dad.””

Under the picture was a message.

*YOU WANT HIM BACK? COME ALONE.*

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“He’s my father.””

“It’s a trap.””

“I know.””

“Then why would you go?””

Because Evelyn had spent thirty years being controlled by fear.

And she was done.

“Because they think they still have something I’m afraid to lose.””

Daniel stared at her.

“What are you saying?””

She looked at Alexander’s photograph.

“I already lost everything once.””

A pause.

“Not again.””

Victoria stepped forward.

“I’ll go with you.””

Evelyn looked surprised.

“Why?””

Victoria’s answer was simple.

“Because whoever did this took Alexander from me too.””

Daniel looked at both women.

Two wives.

Two lives.

Both destroyed by the same secret.

Then his phone rang.

Not a message.

A call.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Nobody spoke at first.

Then a familiar voice whispered:

“Daniel.””

His face changed.

Because he recognized it.

Lydia Vale.

“Where are you?””

A shaky breath.

“I don’t have much time.””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“Who has Robert Carter?””

Silence.

Then Lydia said:

“The same person who killed Alexander.””

Evelyn grabbed the phone.

“Who?””

Lydia hesitated.

And then she said the name.

The name nobody expected.

The name that made Victoria drop the photograph from her hand.

“It was…”

The call suddenly cut out.

Daniel looked at the screen.

Disconnected.

Evelyn stared.

“Who was it?””

Daniel slowly raised his eyes.

Because before the call ended, Lydia had whispered one final word.

A name.

May you like

A name from inside the family.

*“Margaret.””*
