Chapter 7: The Child Nobody Knew About

The photograph slipped from Victoria’s hand and landed on the marble floor.

Nobody moved to pick it up.

Nobody even breathed.

Because every person in that ballroom understood what it meant.

Another child.

Another secret.

Another life destroyed by the same people who had already taken eighteen years from Noah and me.

I looked at Victoria.

“Pick it up.””

My voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

She looked surprised.

“Excuse me?””

I stepped forward.

“I said pick it up.””

For the first time that night, someone who had controlled my life looked uncertain.

Victoria slowly bent down and picked up the photograph.

Then she walked toward me.

The entire room watched.

She placed the picture in my hand.

My fingers shook.

A baby.

A tiny newborn wrapped in a white blanket.

A hospital bracelet around his wrist.

The name written on the record underneath made my heart stop.

*Baby Boy Ward.*

I looked at Victoria.

“What is this?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

That was the problem.

Everyone had learned to pause before telling me the truth.

Everyone had spent years deciding how much truth I could handle.

But nobody asked if I wanted the truth.

They only decided when I deserved it.

“Answer me.””

Victoria took a slow breath.

“The night Noah was born, there were two babies connected to the same case.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What case?””

She looked around the ballroom.

At my father.

At Richard.

At Daniel.

“At the Ward inheritance.””

My father’s face hardened.

“Victoria, don’t.””

She ignored him.

“The original documents weren’t just about Elena’s child.””

She pointed at the photograph.

“They were about both children.””

I looked down again.

The baby looked peaceful.

Innocent.

Completely unaware that adults had already decided his fate.

“Who is this?””

Victoria looked at Noah.

Then at me.

“This is the child who disappeared before anyone knew he existed.””

A chill ran through me.

“No.””

Noah stepped closer.

“Mom?””

I looked at him.

I hated that he kept hearing these things.

I hated that every new truth hurt him too.

Victoria continued.

“Your son was hidden because he was the legal heir.””

She paused.

“But this child was hidden because he was evidence.””

The room went silent.

Evidence.

That word again.

I looked at my father.

“What evidence?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan spoke.

His voice was barely audible.

“Dad.””

Everyone turned.

Ethan looked at my father.

“You never told her.””

My father looked exhausted.

“I was trying to fix it.””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“You’ve been saying that for eighteen years.””

My father’s face changed.

A crack appeared in the perfect image he had protected his entire life.

“What are you saying?””

I asked.

Ethan looked at me.

“The second baby wasn’t supposed to exist.””

My stomach tightened.

“Explain.””

He swallowed.

“Because the baby wasn’t Richard’s.””

The ballroom went completely silent.

I looked at Richard.

His face turned pale.

Then I looked at Victoria.

She nodded.

“Your family had been hiding an affair.””

My mind struggled to process it.

Another child.

Another secret.

Another betrayal.

“But why does that matter?””

Victoria looked at Richard.

“Because that child was proof that Richard’s father had been manipulating company records for years.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She opened another file.

“The Ward family trust was created through falsified ownership claims.””

She looked at me.

“Your son’s birth would have exposed the fraud.””

My head spun.

“So they took Noah because of the inheritance.””

“Yes.””

“And the other baby?””

Victoria’s expression changed.

“They took him because he proved someone else’s crime.””

A voice came from behind me.

Richard.

“I never wanted any of this.””

I turned.

The anger inside me returned.

“You never wanted it?””

He looked at Noah.

“I wanted to protect my family.””

I stared at him.

“You keep saying family.””

My voice shook.

“But every decision you made destroyed one.””

Richard looked away.

For the first time, he looked old.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just tired.

Daniel stepped forward.

“There’s something else Elena needs to know.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course there was.

There was always something else.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Victoria.

“You know where the second child is.””

Victoria didn’t deny it.

My heart stopped.

“You know?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

Nobody answered.

The silence felt cruel.

“Where?””

Victoria looked at Noah.

Then at me.

“He is closer than you think.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Before she could answer, a phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Not because of the sound.

Because the ringtone belonged to my father.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What is it?””

He didn’t answer.

He simply handed me the phone.

A message was displayed.

*YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES.*

Below it was a location.

And a photograph.

A young man.

Around Noah’s age.

Standing outside a train station.

My breath caught.

Because I recognized his face.

Not because I had seen him before.

But because he looked like someone I knew.

The same eyes as my father.

The same expression as Ethan.

The same small birthmark beneath his chin.

The same birthmark Noah had.

I looked at my father.

“Who is he?””

My father didn’t speak.

“Dad.””

His lips trembled.

“He’s…”

He couldn’t finish.

Ethan did.

“He’s your brother.””

The words hit me harder than anything else.

“My brother?””

Ethan nodded.

“The child everyone erased.””

I looked at Noah.

Then back at the photograph.

Two boys.

Two lives.

Two secrets.

Both connected to me.

Victoria closed the folder.

“The person who hid Noah wanted control.””

She looked at the photograph.

“But the person who hid the other child wanted the truth buried forever.””

My hands tightened around the phone.

“Who?””

Victoria looked toward the darkened ballroom screens.

Then toward the exit.

And whispered:

“The same person who has been watching us tonight.””

Everyone turned.

A figure stood near the back entrance.

I hadn’t noticed him before.

Maybe because he had been standing in the shadows.

Maybe because everyone else knew he was there.

He stepped forward.

An older man.

Gray hair.

A scar across his cheek.

My father looked terrified.

Richard whispered:

“No…”

The man smiled.

“Hello, Elena.””

I stared.

I didn’t know him.

But my family did.

The stranger looked at Noah.

Then at the photograph in my hand.

“You finally found both of them.””

Both.

The word echoed.

I looked at him.

“Who are you?””

He smiled.

“My name is Adrian Cole.””

My father’s face went white.

Because that name meant something.

Something terrible.

Adrian looked at me.

“I was the man who made your family rich.””

He took another step.

“And I was the man who made sure your children disappeared.””

The room erupted.

Noah stepped back.

Clara grabbed his arm.

I felt my entire body go cold.

“My children?””

Adrian smiled.

“Yes.””

He looked at me.

“Because eighteen years ago, Elena…”

He paused.

“And tonight, you’re going to learn the truth about the child you were never told you had.””

Then the lights went out again.

May you like

And when they came back on…

Noah was gone.
