Chapter 8: The Son They Tried to Erase

“Noah!””

My voice tore through the darkness.

For a second, I couldn’t hear anything except my own heartbeat.

The ballroom was chaos.

Guests shouted.

Chairs scraped across the floor.

Security rushed toward the exits.

Phones flashed in every direction.

But I only had one thought.

My son was gone.

Again.

Eighteen years ago, someone took him from me.

And tonight, after I finally found him…

Someone took him again.

I pushed through the crowd.

“Close the doors!””

Security looked at me.

“What?””

“Close every door in this building!””

My voice carried across the ballroom.

Nobody questioned me.

Not because they understood.

Because they saw the fear on my face.

Clara was crying.

“He was right beside me.””

I grabbed her shoulders.

“What happened?””

She shook her head.

“The lights went out.””

Her voice broke.

“I felt his hand.””

A tear slipped down her face.

“Then I didn’t.””

My chest tightened.

Daniel was already moving toward the security desk.

“Check the cameras.””

A guard ran toward the control room.

Richard stood frozen.

Not shocked.

Not confused.

Terrified.

I turned toward him.

“You knew this could happen.””

He looked at me.

“Elena…”

“You knew.””

His silence answered.

I stepped closer.

“How many times?””

His eyes lowered.

“How many times did you let someone take my child?””

Richard swallowed.

“I thought I had prevented this.””

I stared at him.

“You thought?””

My anger exploded.

“You thought?””

The entire room went silent.

“You took eighteen years from me because you thought you knew better.””

My voice shook.

“You let me bury my son.””

Richard looked destroyed.

“I was trying to keep him alive.””

“And now he’s gone.””

That sentence broke whatever defense he had left.

Because he had no answer.

No excuse.

No explanation.

Just the truth.

Noah was gone.

A guard returned from the control room.

His face was pale.

“Ms. Ward…”

“What?””

He hesitated.

“The cameras were disabled.””

Daniel immediately looked at him.

“How?””

The guard shook his head.

“Someone entered the system using an authorized access code.””

My stomach dropped.

“Whose code?””

The guard looked at the tablet.

Then slowly lifted his eyes.

“Yours.””

Everyone froze.

Mine.

Impossible.

“What?””

The guard showed me the screen.

A login record.

A timestamp.

My name.

Elena Ward.

“No.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then my father.

Someone had framed me.

Someone wanted everyone to believe I was involved.

Victoria stepped forward.

“Not just involved.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She pointed toward the stage.

The screens were still black.

Then suddenly one turned on.

A video began playing.

My own face appeared.

A recording.

But I had never made it.

My voice came through the speakers.

“If anything happens to Noah, it is because I chose this.””

The room went silent.

My blood turned cold.

That wasn’t my voice.

Not exactly.

It sounded like me.

But wrong.

Edited.

Manipulated.

A deepfake.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“They planned this.””

My father whispered:

“Adrian.””

The video continued.

My fake voice said:

“I knew the truth would destroy my family.””

Then the screen changed.

A map appeared.

A location.

A warehouse outside the city.

Victoria looked at it.

“He wants us to follow.””

Richard immediately moved.

“I’m going.””

I grabbed his arm.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I have to.””

I shook my head.

“You lost the right to make decisions for him.””

The words hurt.

But they were true.

Richard stepped back.

Daniel picked up the folder.

“I know where that location is.””

Everyone turned.

“Of course you do.””

My voice was cold.

Daniel accepted the accusation.

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“How much have you hidden?””

He looked at Noah’s empty chair.

“Too much.””

For the first time, he looked completely broken.

“I spent eighteen years protecting a secret.””

He looked at me.

“I forgot the secret belonged to you.””

Twenty minutes later, we arrived at the abandoned warehouse.

The rain had returned.

Of course it had.

It felt like the entire night had been designed around storms.

The building stood alone at the edge of an industrial area.

Old.

Dark.

Silent.

Police had arrived, but my only concern was inside.

Noah.

We entered together.

Me.

Richard.

Daniel.

Ethan.

My father.

Victoria.

A family built on lies walking into a building built on secrets.

The first room was empty.

The second was empty.

Then we heard a sound.

A voice.

“Mom?””

Everything stopped.

I ran.

“Noah!””

He was sitting on the floor of a small office.

His hands were tied, but he was unharmed.

I fell beside him.

“Oh my God.””

I pulled him into my arms.

For a moment, he didn’t move.

Then he hugged me back.

“I knew you would come.””

Those words almost destroyed me.

Because he trusted me.

After everything.

He still trusted me.

“I’m sorry.””

He shook his head.

“Stop saying sorry.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because none of this was your fault.””

The fact that my eighteen-year-old son was comforting me broke my heart.

A slow clap echoed through the warehouse.

Everyone turned.

Adrian Cole stood in the doorway.

Calm.

Smiling.

“I knew you would find him.””

Richard stepped forward.

“You’re finished.””

Adrian laughed.

“Am I?””

He looked around.

“At least now everyone is finally together.””

My father’s face was filled with anger.

“You destroyed this family.””

Adrian smiled.

“No.””

He pointed at him.

“You did.””

The words hung in the air.

My father said nothing.

Adrian walked closer.

“Do you know what the problem with powerful families is?””

Nobody answered.

“They believe they can bury anything.””

He looked at me.

“They think money can erase pain.””

Then he looked at Noah.

“But children remember.””

Noah stared at him.

“Why did you take me?””

Adrian’s expression changed.

For the first time, he looked almost human.

“Because your existence threatened everything.””

Noah frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

Adrian looked at me.

“Your mother’s father built the Ward empire with stolen technology.””

My father went pale.

Adrian continued.

“And the second child was the only person who could prove it.””

My eyes moved to him.

“The other baby?””

Adrian nodded.

“His blood carried the evidence.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You lied about everything.””

Adrian smiled.

“You did too.””

Daniel froze.

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian looked at Daniel.

“Tell her.””

Daniel looked away.

I felt cold.

“Tell me what?””

Silence.

Then Daniel whispered:

“The second child…”

He swallowed.

“He wasn’t born that night.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Noah.

Then me.

“The records were changed.””

My heart raced.

“The baby in the photograph…”

Daniel nodded.

“Was created to hide another truth.””

Adrian smiled.

“Now you’re getting closer.””

I looked around.

Everyone was hiding something.

Everyone had a piece of the truth.

Except me.

Then Noah suddenly spoke.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at him.

He looked at Adrian.

“You said both children.””

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.””

Noah’s face changed.

“Then why did you only take me?””

Silence.

A terrible silence.

Adrian looked at him.

“Because you were the one I could reach.””

Noah stood slowly.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian smiled.

“It means…”

He looked toward the warehouse door.

“…the other child was never missing.””

The door behind us opened.

A young man stepped inside.

Same age as Noah.

Same eyes.

Same birthmark.

My breath stopped.

Noah stared at him.

I stared at him.

Because suddenly I understood.

The photograph.

The records.

The impossible secrets.

The child nobody knew about.

The young man looked at me.

And whispered:

“Mom?””

I couldn’t move.

Because I had spent eighteen years believing I lost one child.

May you like

But the truth was much worse.

I had lost two.
