Chapter 5: The Secret Beneath the Floorboards

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because of the messages.

Not because of Daniel.

Not even because of the photograph.

I couldn’t sleep because every time I closed my eyes, I saw the same thing.

A woman in a gray coat.

Standing outside my apartment.

Watching me hold a baby I was never supposed to find.

By three in the morning, I was sitting on the edge of my bed, staring at the hallway.

Emma’s bedroom door was slightly open.

A small nightlight shaped like a moon glowed inside.

She was sleeping.

Peacefully.

Like nothing had changed.

Like her entire identity hadn’t been questioned in a single afternoon.

I hated that the adults around her were carrying a storm she didn’t understand.

I hated that someone had made choices for her before she was old enough to make her own.

My phone sat beside me.

No new messages.

No calls.

Just silence.

And somehow, that was worse.

Because whoever had sent those messages knew exactly where to hurt me.

They knew about Emma.

They knew about Daniel.

They knew about that night.

A night I had spent five years trying to forget.

At 4:12 a.m., I heard a noise.

A soft creak.

I immediately stood.

My heart jumped.

“Emma?””

No answer.

I walked down the hallway.

Her door opened wider.

She was sitting up in bed, hugging her stuffed rabbit.

The same rabbit Daniel had shown me.

The one that belonged to Lily.

“Sweetheart?””

Emma looked up.

“Mommy.””

I rushed over.

“What happened?””

She looked toward the window.

“There was a lady.””

Every muscle in my body froze.

“What lady?””

Emma rubbed her eyes.

“The one from my dream.””

I sat beside her.

“Tell Mommy about the dream.””

She looked down at her rabbit.

“She was standing in flowers.””

My breathing slowed.

A field.

The same field she had described before.

“What did she say?””

Emma’s tiny fingers squeezed the rabbit’s ear.

“She said she was sorry.””

My voice came out barely above a whisper.

“Sorry for what?””

Emma looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

Then she added something that made my blood run cold.

“She said she tried to come back for me.””

I didn’t sleep after that.

At sunrise, I made a decision.

I needed answers.

Not theories.

Not guesses.

Answers.

And there was only one place I could start.

The apartment.

The place where Emma was found.

The place where everything began.

The building looked smaller than I remembered.

Five years had changed it.

The paint on the walls had faded.

The old security light above the entrance flickered.

But standing there again brought every memory rushing back.

The rain.

The ambulance.

The crying baby.

The fear.

I had lived in apartment 3B back then.

A temporary place.

A place I was supposed to stay for only a few months.

Instead, it became the place where my entire life changed.

Daniel stood beside me.

I hadn’t expected him to come.

But when I called him that morning, he answered before the first ring ended.

“I need to see where it happened,” he had said.

And I understood.

Because he needed to see the place where his daughter entered my life.

We walked toward the back entrance.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, Daniel broke the silence.

“You never told anyone about the woman?””

I shook my head.

“I tried.””

“And?””

“The police asked me questions. I told them everything I remembered.””

“What did they say?””

“That I was probably confused.””

Daniel looked angry.

“Because you were scared?””

“Because I was a tired woman holding a baby I didn’t know.””

He looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology surprised me.

“For what?””

“For everything you went through.””

I looked away.

“I’m still angry.””

“I know.””

“I’m angry that someone took her.””

“I know.””

“I’m angry that I might lose her.””

Daniel stopped walking.

The sadness on his face was immediate.

“I’m not trying to take her from you.””

I looked at him.

“Then what do you want?””

His answer came quietly.

“I want to know my daughter.””

That was the first time he said it without anger.

Without desperation.

Just hope.

And somehow, that hurt more.

We reached the alley behind the building.

The same place where I found Emma.

I stood there.

Five years disappeared.

“I heard crying,” I whispered.

Daniel looked around.

“Where was she?””

“Right there.””

I pointed near the old brick wall.

“She was lying beside that trash container.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

I watched him imagine it.

His daughter alone.

Cold.

Waiting.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

His eyes opened.

“For what?””

“For not finding her sooner.””

His face changed.

“Sarah.””

“I know that doesn’t make sense.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“It does.””

He looked at me.

“You saved her.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because part of me had spent years wondering if I was somehow wrong.

If loving her made me selfish.

If keeping her made me the villain in someone else’s story.

But Daniel didn’t look at me like that.

He looked at me like someone who understood.

Then I noticed something.

A loose brick near the wall.

I frowned.

“That wasn’t there before.””

Daniel looked down.

“What?””

I walked closer.

The brick was slightly pushed outward.

Almost like someone had moved it.

I touched it.

It shifted.

“Sarah?””

I pulled it free.

Behind it was a small empty space.

And inside…

A plastic bag.

Neither of us spoke.

My hands trembled as I reached in.

The bag was old.

Dust covered it.

But it had been protected.

Someone had hidden it there.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

A small key.

And a photograph.

My breath stopped.

Because the photograph was not of Lily.

It was of me.

Holding baby Emma.

But this picture was different.

I was smiling.

The baby was asleep.

And standing beside me…

Was the woman in the gray coat.

Claire.

Daniel grabbed the photo.

His face went pale.

“She was there.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“She was there that night.””

The realization hit both of us.

Claire hadn’t just watched.

She had been involved.

I unfolded the paper.

The handwriting was shaky.

Only one sentence was written.

*Sarah, if you are reading this, I failed to protect her.*

My fingers went numb.

Daniel looked over my shoulder.

I turned the paper over.

There was more.

*I couldn’t tell you the truth because they were watching me. I knew they would come for Lily if I spoke.*

My heart raced.

“They?””

Daniel looked at me.

The same question was in both our eyes.

Who were they?

The note continued.

*The man who took Lily wasn’t a stranger. He was someone we trusted.*

I swallowed.

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“Who?””

I kept reading.

The next line was smudged.

But I could still make out the words.

*The person who caused all of this is someone you both know.*

I looked at Daniel.

“Both?””

He took the paper from my hand.

Then he saw the final line.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“Daniel?””

He didn’t answer.

He just stared.

Because the final words weren’t written to me.

They were written to him.

*Daniel, I’m sorry. Your brother knows where Lily is.*

The alley went silent.

I looked at him.

“You have a brother?””

Daniel didn’t move.

His face had lost all color.

“No.””

The word came out like a whisper.

Then he shook his head.

“No, that’s impossible.””

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

And for the first time since I met him…

He looked afraid.

“My brother died.””

A cold wind moved through the alley.

I stared at the note.

At the name it implied.

At the secret that had been buried behind a wall for five years.

Daniel slowly stepped backward.

“His name was Michael.””

The way he said it told me everything.

This wasn’t just another clue.

This was the missing piece.

Because whoever had taken Lily…

Whoever had brought Emma into my life…

Was connected to Daniel by blood.

May you like

And somewhere, somehow…

A dead man had been holding the answer all along.
