Chapter 9: The Truth My Mother Buried
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
My mother.
The words didn’t make sense.
They couldn’t.
My mother had been gone for eight years.
She wasn’t there the night I found Emma.
She couldn’t have been involved.
Could she?
I looked at the photograph in Michael’s hand.
The hospital entrance.
The rain outside.
Me holding a tiny baby wrapped in a yellow blanket.
And behind me…
A woman.
Older.
Blonde hair.
One hand covering her mouth.
My mother.
“No.””
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Michael watched my face carefully.
“You recognize her.””
I stepped closer.
“Where did you get that?””
He smiled slightly.
“The same place I got everything.””
“Where?””
“From people who thought they had hidden the truth.””
Daniel moved beside me.
“Stop playing games.””
Michael looked at him.
“This isn’t a game.””
“Then explain.””
Michael glanced at Emma.
Then back at us.
“Your family has been protecting secrets for a long time.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You don’t get to talk about family.””
Michael ignored him.
“Sarah’s mother knew what happened to Lily.””
My chest tightened.
“My mother barely knew anything about my life.””
Michael laughed quietly.
“That’s what she wanted you to believe.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Because if that was true…
If my mother knew…
Then every memory I had of her changed.
Every conversation.
Every goodbye.
Every moment.
“She would never do that.””
Michael tilted his head.
“Wouldn’t she?””
I hated the doubt creeping in.
I hated that a stranger could say a few words and make me question someone I loved.
“You’re lying.””
“Maybe.””
He looked at the photograph.
“But why would I lie about your mother?””
I had no answer.
Because the worst lies were the ones mixed with truth.
Claire stepped forward.
“Michael, stop.””
He looked at her.
“You already ruined enough lives.””
Claire’s voice shook.
“You don’t get to rewrite what happened.””
Michael smiled.
“You still think you’re the hero?””
“No.””
Claire looked at him.
“I know what I did.””
The room went silent.
Michael turned back to me.
“Ask her.””
I looked at Claire.
“What?””
Michael nodded toward her.
“Ask her what your mother knew.””
My eyes moved to Claire.
“Did you know my mother?””
Claire didn’t answer.
And that was enough.
My stomach dropped.
“Claire.””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The word felt like a crack through the floor.
“How?””
“Your mother helped me.””
“Helped you do what?””
Claire looked at Emma.
“Keep Lily safe.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice broke.
“No, you don’t get to say that.””
I stepped closer.
“My mother knew?””
Claire nodded.
“She knew Michael was dangerous.””
“And she never told me?””
“I’m sorry.””
The apology made me angry.
“Sorry?””
My voice rose.
“You all keep saying sorry.””
I looked around the room.
“Everyone knew something.””
Daniel.
Claire.
Michael.
My mother.
“Everyone had pieces of the truth.””
I pointed at myself.
“And I was the person raising a child without knowing any of it.””
Emma moved closer to me.
I immediately lowered my voice.
I couldn’t fall apart in front of her.
Not now.
Michael watched me.
Almost with satisfaction.
“She chose you because you were the only person she trusted.””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
“Your mother.””
“Why?””
Michael looked at Emma.
“Because she knew you would love her.””
The anger inside me weakened.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Because that was the one thing I understood.
Love.
My mother had many flaws.
But she loved me.
Would she really have hidden something this huge?
Would she have chosen a stranger’s child over telling me the truth?
I looked at Claire.
“What exactly happened?””
Claire took a deep breath.
“After Lily disappeared, Emily found out Michael was involved.””
Daniel looked up.
“What?””
Claire nodded.
“She discovered he had planned everything.””
Michael’s expression remained calm.
Almost bored.
“She was always dramatic.””
Daniel stared at him.
“You destroyed your own family.””
Michael smiled.
“No.””
He looked at Emma.
“I created one.””
I felt sick.
Claire continued.
“Emily contacted Sarah’s mother because she needed someone outside our family.””
“Why my mother?””
“Because she knew your mother had helped families through the hospital.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Claire looked at me.
“Your mother volunteered in the maternity ward.””
I swallowed.
A memory surfaced.
My mother wearing a blue hospital badge.
Coming home late.
Talking about babies she had met.
I had forgotten.
Or maybe I had never paid attention.
“She knew how to protect identities,” Claire said.
Daniel looked confused.
“So your mother helped hide Lily?””
“No.””
Claire shook her head.
“She helped create a safe life for her.””
I looked at Michael.
“And you?””
His smile disappeared.
“I was trying to get her back.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You mean kidnap her.””
Michael’s eyes turned cold.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“I know you took my daughter.””
“I saved her.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice was stronger.
“You stole her.””
The two brothers stared at each other.
And for the first time, I saw the truth.
Michael wasn’t angry because he lost Lily.
He was angry because someone stopped him from controlling her.
That was different.
Very different.
Then Emma spoke.
“Why does everyone call me Lily?””
Everyone froze.
I turned.
She was standing there with tears in her eyes.
My heart shattered.
She had heard everything.
“Sweetheart…”
She looked at me.
“Am I not Emma?””
The question was the most painful thing I had ever heard.
I dropped to my knees.
“You are Emma.””
“But he said…”
“He’s wrong.””
Michael watched us.
I hated him for bringing this pain into her world.
“You are my daughter.””
Emma’s eyes filled with tears.
“But I have another daddy?””
I looked at Daniel.
Then back at her.
I didn’t know what to say.
Because she deserved the truth.
Not another lie.
“Daniel loves you.””
She looked at him.
Daniel’s face broke.
“I do.””
His voice shook.
“I don’t know what I am to you yet.””
He swallowed.
“But I know I have loved you since the moment I saw you.””
Emma stared at him.
Then she walked forward.
Slowly.
She took his hand.
Daniel closed his eyes.
And cried.
No one spoke.
Not even Michael.
For a moment, there was only a father holding his daughter’s hand.
Then Michael ruined it.
“You still don’t understand.””
I looked at him.
“What now?””
He reached into the folder again.
This time, he pulled out one more document.
“This is why I came.””
Daniel looked suspicious.
“What is it?””
Michael placed it on the table.
I walked closer.
My heart sank.
Because it was a birth certificate.
Not Lily’s.
Not Emma’s.
Mine.
I looked at the date.
Then the name.
Then the signature.
My hands started shaking.
“What is this?””
Michael’s voice became quiet.
“The reason your mother chose you.””
I stared at the paper.
Because at the bottom was a signature.
A signature I recognized.
My mother’s.
And beside it…
A second name.
A name that made Claire cover her mouth.
A name that made Daniel step backward.
A name that changed everything.
Because it wasn’t Michael.
It wasn’t Emily.
It wasn’t anyone connected to Lily.
It was someone connected to me.
Someone who had been part of my life since I was born.
Michael leaned closer.
“The person who helped your mother hide Lily…”
May you like
He paused.
“…was your father.””
